Minors in first final in fifteen
years after victory over Salthill in replay
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.11 Salthill 2.05
After wonderfully contested and exciting drawn encounter
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Salthill crossed paths again
in the Minor B championship semi final replay which took place in
Ballindereen on Saturday November 14th. After surrendering an eight
point lead and escaping with a lucky drawn in the end when Salthill
missed a last minute free for victory nine minutes into injury time.
This was always going to be another close and physical battle with the
prize for the winners a final meeting with Michael Cusack's. On a dry
day, but on a heavy pitch, Kilnadeema/Leitrim were first to have use of
a fresh breeze. This half turned out to be a great for new centre half
forward Damien Donoghue who scored 1.03 in the opening thirty minutes.
Damien opened the scoring with a good point from play inside the opening
two minutes. Salt hill's county minor Tadhg Haron, who starred in the
drawn game soon replied with a equalising point from a free after 5mins.
New corner forward Finian O'Toole soon put Kilnadeema/Leitrim back in
front when at the second attempt he shot mover a lovely point. Dara
Herlihy then added a point from his first free of the day after 10 mins
as Kilnadeema/Leitrim began to dominate all over the field. all this
pressure paid of two minutes later when Shane Lawless set up Damien
Donoghue for a crucial goal and a five point lead. Michael Donoghue then
stepped up to the table with a brilliant point from a lineball. Damien
Donoghue continued to impress and soon added two more points from play,
one better than the next to open up a eight point lead. Amazingly only
one more point followed in the first half when Tadhg Haron added a point
from play for Salthill on 30 mins. The halftime whistle followed shortly
afterwards as Kilnadeema/Leitrim enjoyed a lead of seven, 1.06 to 0.02.
Any thought Kilnadeema/Leitrim had of been home and dry were soon
knocked on the head as Salthill came out all guns blazing. Tadhg Haron
opened the second half scoring with a pointed free after 4 mins. Haron
was to play a major roll in what happened next when after a Neil Hyland
shot at goal was brilliantly saved by Paul Howard at the expense of a
sixty five, Haron's shot was deflected into his own net by a very
unlucky Martin Costello to suddenly close the gap to three after 7 mins.
A minute later amazingly we were level when a long range free again from
Tadhg Haron went all the way to the net to leave the score at 1-6 to
2-3.Kilnadeema/Leitrim were now under severe pressure but the response
can only be described as amazing as they hunted in packs getting in
vital hooks and blocks all over the field. Dara Herlihy settled the
nerves two minutes later when he pointed a free. Padraig Stapleton who
was now playing at full forward scored a brilliant point after 11 mins
to lift the pressure a little bit more. We then had seven minutes of
hectic action with no score for either side before Dara Herlihy scored
another free. Alvin Mitchell who was dominating now at midfield soon
found enough space to score a lovely point and a four point gap. Tadhg
Haron was doing his best to keep Salthill in the game and on 23 mins he
scored a brilliant lineball. Any hopes of a Salthill comeback was ended
for certain after 26 minutes when Shane Lawless goaled for
Kilnadeema/Leitrim after many goals chances were squandered beforehand.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim had introduced Gary Curley at this stage and he
scored a vital point after 27 mins. Tadhg Haron then pointed another
free as time was running out. Referee Josie keehan soon blew the final
whistle to scenes of great relief on a final score line of 2.11 to 2.05.
This was a very good performance with some brilliant personal displays
especially from the half back line with Mark Kelly simply brilliant all
through. The full back line and goalie did very well under a lot of
pressure at times. Michael and Alvin did a huge amount of work all day
at midfield. Most impressive among the forwards were Dara, Damien and
Shane. All roads now lead to the final and a great day out for the club.

Lucky escape as minors draw in
semi final with Salthill
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.15 Salthill 2.12
A lead of eight points with fifteen minutes left to play was soon
wiped out when two of the top sides in the minor B championship clashed
in the semi final as Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Salthill meet in
Clarenbridge on Monday October 26th. After a great
victory over Ardrahan in the quarter final, hopes were high for
something similar this time. Kilnadeema/Leitrim got the aid of the
breeze in the opening half, but it was Salthill who started the
brightest and opened the scoring with a point from play by Neil Hyland
in the opening minute. County minor star Tadhg Haron then shot over a
pointed free a minute later before Dara Herlihy opened
Kilnadeema/Leitrim's account with a pointed free two minutes later. Dara
then levelled up the game with another pointed free. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
were slightly the better team at this stage as both teams showed a lot
of tension making scores very hard to come by, eventually Tadhg Haron
shot over a third Salthill point from play after 13 minutes. Dara
Herlihy replied four minutes later with a third pointed free to keep his
side in the game. Finally on 20 mins the first score from play for
Kilnadeema/Leitrim arrived when Alvin Mitchell scored a brilliant point
from near midfield. Dara then put two points between the sides with
another pointed free a minute later. Padraig Stapleton then made it a
three point game with another point from play as the game swung from end
to end. The next big moment of the game was a foul on the Salthill full
forward Neil Hyland as he bore down on goal which resulted in a
penalty. A well struck shot from Tadhg haron which was brilliantly
saved by Paul Howard for a 65 which was missed. Dara Herlihy with his
fifth pointed free and Tadhg haron with another point from play left the
half time score reading 0.07 to 0.04. With the breeze to come in the
second half for Salthill, it was set up for a great battle. Tadhg haron
got Salthill even closer after two minutes with another pointed free and
he followed that up a minute later with a point from play putting
Kilnadeema/Leitrim under a lot of pressure so early in the half
especially as they had to replace full back Daithi O'Donoghue just
before half time with a head injury which meant a few players been
changed around. Kilnadeema/Leitrim suddenly sprung to life and outscored
Salthill by 1.05 to 0.02 by the 17th minute of the half. First Padraig
Stapleton split the posts with a brilliant point from our near the
sideline before Shane Lawless shot over a lovely point on the run. Ronan
Mulloy then pulled back another point for Salthill from play after 8
mins. Michael Donoghue in his new roll of corner forward put over a
lovely point from near the corner flag. half time substitute Finian
O'Toole then added another point before Dara Herlihy scored his first
point from play after 13 mins to leave the score reading 0.12 to 0.07.
Fifteen minutes into the half the first big breakthrough happened when
corner forward Nathan Moran shot home a vital goal to open up a eight
point lead. Salthill knew they were in trouble and responded positively
with some great scores. Tadhg Haron pointed from play after 17 mins
before Geoff Malone shot a crucial goal from a tight angle a minute
later to give Salthill a lifeline. Tadhg Haron then pointed another free
to leave just three points between the sides with eleven minutes to
play. Dara Herlihy settled the ship with another point from play a
minute later. Haron and Herlihy then swopted points as play swung from
end to end. Dara then put another great point to leave five points
between the sides with time almost up. Tadhg reduced the lead again with
a point deflected over by Paul Howard. With the game going away from
them Salthill introduced Conor Halleron and what an impact he made as
the struck the first ball he received towards goal which took a fierce
bounce and flew past Paul Howard for a life saving goal and it was game
on again. The referee signalled 5 minutes of injury time which still
gave Salthill loads of time to come back. Geoff Malone then scored a
great point from play to level up the game again as a replay looked
certain. The referee continued to play on after the extra time was
played and eventually with seven minutes played he awarded a very
controversial free to Salthill eventually after two minutes of
discussion Tadhg Haron took, thankfully for Kilnadeema/Leitrim he
shot it wide to the relieve of all concerned the referee signalled the
end with the final score line reading 1.15 to 2.12 with a chance to
fight another day. This was tough, physical battle which could have gone
either way. Kilnadeema/Leitrim can thank in particular Paul Howard for
his many saves, Mark Kelly who was wonderful all through, Martin
Costello also in defence, Alvin Mitchell at midfield and forwards
Dara Herlihy, Padraig Stapleton and Nathan Moran among many great
performances throughout the team.

Tremendous
second half performance sees minor team defeat Ardrahan in quarter final
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.15
Ardrahan 2.10
Following a wonderful second half performance of skill, speed,
determination and intensity, Kilnadeema/Leitrim minor side finally saw
off an extremely tough Ardrahan team in the quarter final of the
championship which was played on a bright day, but also on a very wet
Castledaly pitch on Sunday October 11th. In a game
between two of the favourites for this competition, this turned out to
be a brilliant game all through. Shane Lawless, who was to a big
influence on this game shot over the opening point from play in the
opening minute. Equally influential to this game was Ardrahan's Under 16
county star Jonathion Glynn who scored one goal and eight points in the
game. He soon shot over the equalising point from a free. We then went
ten minutes without a score before Glynn put Ardrahan ahead with another
pointed free. He repeated this two minutes later as Ardrahan slowly
began to get away. Kilnadeema/Leitrim captain Alvin Mitchell immediately
replied with a brilliant point from midfield. Padraic Diviney and Dara
Herlihy soon exchanged points from play as the intensity
increased. Shane Lawless, who was causing Ardrahan a lot of problems
with his runs at the defence put over his second point to level the
scores at four points a piece after after 17 mins. Dara Herlihy then put
Kilnadeema/Leitrim back in front with a point from play after 20 mins.
Three minutes later we had the score of the half when Mark Kelly stormed
up the field to shoot over a majestic point. Ardrahan were stung by this
and quickly responded with first a Jonathon Glynn point from play and
then the first big moment in the game arrived on twenty eight minutes
when after poor defending, the ball worked its way to wing forward Brian
Murtagh who shot home a great goal giving Paul Howard no chance. Dara
Herlihy reduced the lead again to the minimum with a pointed free before
Ardrahan full forward Padraig Diviney shot over the final score of the
half on 30 mins to leave the score at the break 0.07 to 1.06 in the
south Galway sides favour. They now had to face the breeze in the second
half and a seriously determined Kilnadeema/Leitrim side. it took just a
minute for Nathan Moran to reduce the lead to one with a superb point
near the corner flag. Three minutes later the game took a big turn when
Shane Lawless got on the end of a loose high ball to flick to the net a
vital goal and put his side back in front. We wondered would
Kilnadeema/Leitrim push on from here or would Ardrahan respond. Brian
Murtagh did just that on 6 mins with a point from play to leave just a
point in it again. Dara Herlihy and Jonathan Glynn then swopted points
from free's as the game ebbed and flowed. Glynn then shot over the
equaliser on 11 mins again from a place ball. Shane Lawless settled the
nerves again for Kilnadeema/Leitrim with a point from play on 12 mins.
Niall Haverty hit over a lovely point on the run after been set up by a
Mark Kelly line ball. Ardrahan would not lie down though and soon
Jonathan Glynn reduced it to one again with a point from play. Damien
Donoghue, who was finally getting some room at full forward then made
his mark with two points from play by the twenty sixth minute,
sandwiched in between was a mighty point from Dara Herlihy. Ardrahan had
one last sting in the tail for this game though when a free by Jonathan
Glynn from out near midfield went all the way to the net to leave just
one point in it again coming near the end. Referee Joe Larkin found
plenty of extra time to add on which added to the tension and
excitement. Finian O'Toole, who had just been introduced as a substitute
put two points between the sides again with a lovely point from play.
Ardrahan were still putting a lot of pressure on the Kilnadeema/Leitrim
defence in the hope of getting a winning goal from somewhere but it was
at the other end of the pitch we had the last drama as Shane Lawless
reacted quickest to a breaking ball to goal. That was it for Ardrahan as
Joe Larkin blew the final whistle on a final score line of 2.15 to 2.10.
A five point defeat for Ardrahan was probably not a true reflection of
their performance which was very strong, but for Kilnadeema/Leitrim it
is onwards and upwards to a semi final date with Salthill with much more
work still to do. While the forwards played very well with six out of
seven scoring, it was the defence which really dug out this result with
some mighty performances built around a very good half back line of
Kelly, Fahy and Costello with Alvin Mitchell also dominating at
midfield.

Bitter disappointment as poor first half
ends championship hopes for Intermediate team in replay
Kilnadeema/Kilnadeema 1.07 Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry 0.13
On a perfect day for hurling, Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry powered their way into
the Intermediate County semi-final after overcoming a disappointing
Kilnadeema/Leitrim side in the quarter final replay which was played in
Kenny Park, Athenry on Sunday October 4th.
After a great
battle the previous Sunday in Loughrea, this replay was looked forward
to with great expectations between neighbouring parishes. On a day when
a stiff breeze blew into the town goal, this turned out to be the
preverbal game of two half's with Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry first to have use
of the elements. I took six minutes for the opening score to arrive from
the stick of Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry centre half back Karl Kavanagh with a
80yard free. The next twelve scores all came from play for
Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry with corner forward Brian Cunningham and wing
forward Ronan Madden causing most damage to Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Brian
Cunningham added his first point a minute later, which was soon added to
by a double from Madden to open up a five point lead after ten minutes.
Michael Dervan then added his only score of the game a minute later as
the scores pilled up. Cunningham and Madden again again added two more
points by the twenth minute as Kilnadeema/Leitrim found themselves
stretched to the limit. Midfielder Anthony Burke soon got in on the act
as the lead got bigger and bigger. The final scores of the half arrived
from Declan Donnelly and a fourth point from Ronan Madden to leave
Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry on ten points. sadly we have to note that
Kilnadeema/Leitrim failed to score even though they had many chances
throughout the half, mainly through David and Tom Tierney and a
wonderful goal chance from Michael Flanagan which was brilliantly saved
by Kevin Devine to leave the scoreboard reading 0.10 to no score. We
wondered was it a step too far to come back from and three minutes into
the second half Declan Donnelly was to make it even harder as he pointed
from play. Donnelly was now playing at centre half forward and
causing havoc. Eventually after over forty minutes of play Eamon Hyland
opened his sides account with a long range point from play. We wondered
was this the kick start Kilnadeema/Leitrim needed. After pilling on the
pressure David Tierney won a free after been dragged to the ground when
a goal was likely. David himself pointed the 21 yard free when a goal
was badly needed. Dara Herlihy then pointed a free by the fourteenth
minute as eight points still separated the sides. The game eventually
came to life after 19 minutes when Tom Tierney some how managed to
scramble a goal as he was surrounded by three defenders to leave only
five points between the sides. Kilnadeema/Leitrim then introduced
Michael Regan and he made an instant impact pointing a minute later.
Kevin Boyle then pointed a massive free from midfield which was quickly
followed by a David Tierney point from play as Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry with
now only a two point lead became very jittery. They needed a leader to
come forward and no one better than Brian Cunningham as he shot over two
two massive points on 25 and 26 minutes. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were still
very much on top and Michael Regan reduced the lead to a goal with
another point from play. Try as they could, Kilnadeema/Leitrim found no
way passed the Liam Hodgins lead Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry defence and the
best they could do was a 21 yard free left of the goal which was saved
well from Tom Tierney to leave the final score board reading 1.07 to
0.13. Heartbreak again for this team in a quarter final, but they could
really only blame themselves for the very poor first half display,
especially from the forward unit. For players like Kevin Boyle and David
Spellman in defence who were brilliant throughout, this is even harder
to accept. For David Tierney in particular it is another bitter
disappointment of unfulfilled dreams.

Injury time pointed free from Dara

Kilnadeema/Leitrim
1.12 Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry 1.12
The meeting of neighbouring clubs in championship hurling is always
looked forward to with great anticipation, and this was certainly the
case when the Intermediate sides of Kilnadeema/Leitrim and
Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry clashed in the quarter final on Sunday September
27th in St Brendan's Park, Loughrea.
Two clubs who have been out of senior hurling now for a few years went
at each with great gusto from the off. Kilnadeema/Leitrim made the
better start and opened the scoring with a pointed free from Tom Tierney
after two minutes after Michael Flanagan was fouled. A quick delivery
from Kevin Boyle set up full forward Liam Geargthy for a second point
after 5 mins, this time from play. Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry slowly got to
grips with the situation and soon had their opening score, a point from
play from Declan Donnelly. David Tierney, who was now causing havoc
running through the Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry defence and he soon split the
posts with a lovely point a minute later. Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry full
forward line was getting on top and soon had a big influence on the rest
of the first half and Michael Dervan put the minimum between the sides
after 10 mins. Another point from play, this time Brian Cunningham put
the south east Galway side level for the first time since the start. His
side was now on top and this was answered with three quick fire points
by the fifteenth minute, two pointed frees from Ronan Madden and a good
point from play from John Shiel left Kilnadeema/Leitrim struggling.
David Tierney settled down his side again with a second point from play.
He also provided a wonderful pass to Liam Geargthy for a goal chance
which hit the crossbar. Ronan Madden and Tom Tierney then swopted
pointed free's before a significant score in the game arrived, a poor
line ball lead to a ball been lost in the Kilnadeema/Leitrim defence,
Brian Cunningham did not need a second chance as he crashed home a great
goal for Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry. Brian then added a point from play after
27 mins. The final score of a very good half arrived through a Tom
Tierney pointed to leave the half time score 1.08 to 0.06. The second
half belonged by and large to Kilnadeema/Leitrim who were on top for
long periods. Tom Tierney went about reducing the lead with a point from
play after 3 mins and he added a brilliant point two minutes later to
leave a goal between the sides. Colm Larkin then opened
Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry's second half account with a point from play before
his side were hit with a real knockout punch when David Tierney shot
home a wonderful goal passed the brilliant Kevin Devine to leave just a
point between the sides after 12 mins. Ronan Madden then shot over a
wonderful line ball to settle down his side again. Michael Dervan then
added another point as Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry looked like winners. Tom
Tierney shot over his third point from play on 19 mins to close
the gap again even if he was having an off day in the free taking
department. This was faced up to when substitute Dara Herlihy took over
the job soon after been introduced to great success. Dara reduced the
lead to just one point with one such free after 25 mins. Ronan Madden
settled down his team again with another point from play. Tom Tierney
replied with another point from play on 30 mins to set up a hectic
finish. with time almost up David Tierney was fouled on the half way
line and cool as you like Dara Herlihy stepped up to point the free and
sent us into a replay on a final score line of 1.12 each. This was
a tough game which will have brought on both teams for the next game and
we all look forward to that.

Shane Lawless goals paves the way for
victory over Michael Breaneach's in minor preliminary quarter final
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.15 Michael Breaneach's 1.08
After the long summer break, it was back to competitive action in the
minor hurling championship when Kilnadeema/Leitrim took on Michael
Breaneach's in the preliminary quarter final in Clarenbridge on Sunday
September 20th.
For the Connemara side it was a certain distraction away
from their minor football A semi final which had ended in a draw the
previous Wednesday, while Kilnadeema/Leitrim were hoping to add to their
recent victories at underage level. Even though the team lined out
without long tern injured Gary Curley, their were still high hopes
of success. it was Michael Breaneach's who had the elements first and
opened the scoring through Naoise O' Leonard from a free, and it was the
county minor star who was to end up scoring everything for his side over
the hour. Breaneach's added a second point soon after before Shane
Lawless, Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 16 county star who took over with a
goal spree before half time, first scoring after 7 mins. He then hit the
crossbar with another goal bound shot. Padraig Stapleton soon added a
point before O Leonard shot over a pointed free after 16 mins. Niall
Haverty, who gave a great performance all through added a brilliant
point after eighteen minutes. Dara Herlihy shot over his first point, a
free a minute later as Kilnadeema/Leitrim began to get a
stranglehold on the game. Shane Lawless, who was really on fire soon
shot home his second goal after 20 mins and practically ended Michael
Breaneach's hopes soon after with a third goal. Naoise O' Leonard had
the final say of the first half as he knocked over two pointed frees to
leave the scoreboard at halftime reading 3.03 to 0.05. The big question
for the second half was could the side really keep up this challenge
with scores on the board. After a minute it was obvious they would as
wing back Mark Kelly shot over a brilliant point from half way. Dara
Herlihy with a point from a free and a Shane Lawless point from play
extended the lead. Team captain Alvin Mitchell then shot over a great
point after 5 mins. Michael Donoghue and Padraig Stapleton continued to
pile on the pressure with two more points from play. Niall Haverty, who
was having probably his best ever game at minor level added another
point from play after 13 mins. Dara Herlihy with a free and another long
range point from Padraig Stapleton extended the lead to 3.11 to 0.05
halfway through the second half. Naoise O'leonard finally got Michael
Breaneach's going again with a point from play, before Finian O'Toole
pointed from play. O'Leonard then crashed a 20 mtr free to the net for
the Connemara side after 22 mins and added two pointed free's soon
after. Steven Bruton and Padraig Stapleton again scored two fine points
to finish the scoring on a final score line of 3.15 to 1.08. Their were
many fine performances for Kilnadeema/Leitrim including also James
Conway, Martin Costello and Conor Fahy in defence and all those who
scored throughout. It's up and onwards now to a quarter final meeting
with Ardrahan, a real battle lies ahead.

Tierney accuracy powers Intermediate team
into quarterfinals
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
1.17 Oranmore/Maree 0.13
Twelve months ago Kilnadeema/Leitrim Intermediate team were down in the
dumps after suffering an humiliating defeat to Annaghdown in the
Preliminary quarterfinal of the championship,
roll on one year
later and a similar fixture faced the team again, this time against
Oranmore/Maree and what a transformation we had as the team lifted all
the gloom surrounding them with a solid performance which was too good
for the sky blues and now leaves the team looking forward to a
quarterfinal date with neighbours Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry in a weeks time.
Here now we recall the story of this game which was played in
Ballindereen on Saturday September 12th. it turned out to be a big shoot
out between Tom Tierney and county minor star Niall Burke who both put
up big scores. The game which was played in sweltering heat was tough,
physical all through. Niall Burke opened the scoring with a point from a
65 after 3 mins and Tom Tierney replied with a similar score a minute
later. Enda Fanning, in a new roll at corner forward really put himself
around and won many good balls and frees, Tom put his side ahead with
one such free on 5mins. The first score from play followed soon after
from Oranmore/Maree midfielder Gary Brennan, this after Tierney added
another free and the Kilnadeema/Leitrim sharpshooter could not stop
scoring as he point another free after nine minutes. After creating many
of the early scoring chances Kilnadeema/Leitrim took a firm grip on this
game when Michael Flanagan got a touch on a Liam Geargthy flick to score
a vital goal after 13 mins. Tom Tierney then added a 65 after Liam
Geargthy again saw his goal bound shot pushed out for a vital save.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim were now leading by six before Enda Fanning and Jamie
Harrison swopted points, both from play. David Tierney, who was not
having the best of luck up to this point with his shooting finally got
on the score sheet after 20 mins with a lovely point from play. Niall
and Tom then swopted pointed frees as half time approached. The scoring
was not yet done though as Liam Geargthy and Jamie Harrison from play
and Niall Burke added points to leave the half time score reading
1.09 to 0.06. Oranmore/Maree were the team who impressed most in the
early stages of the second half and took the game to Kilnadeema/Leitrim.
Two points from Niall Burke and a point from play from the same player
were replied to by a Tom Tierney free and a brilliant point from brother
David after 11 mins. Burke continued to take the challenge to the east
Galway side with two more points to leave a goal between the teams after
13 mins. Tom Tierney settled down matters again with a point from play
two minutes later. Burke with a free and Tierney with a 65 still left
the game wide open with twelve minutes to play. substitute John Gormally
then reduced the lead again to just a goal with a point from play.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim had by now up the intensity again and finished the
game very strongly. Two Tom Tierney pointed frees and a wonderful point
from play from Michael Flanagan put six between the teams. It was
fitting that twelve point man Tom Tierney had the final say with another
pointed free right on full time which as referee Pat Greene blew the
final whistle left the scoreboard reading a welcome 1.17 to 0.13. This
was steady performance that will have to go up a few more notches in a
weeks time to have any hope of making a semi final.

Under 16's loose out to Ardrahan by
single point in final group game
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
2.12 Ardrahan 0.19
Kilnadeema/Leitrim took on Ardrahan in the final group game of their
Under 16 championship in sunny Ardrahan on Friday September 11th.
With both
sides needing to get a result to qualify even though a draw would do
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and even a defeat would mean a playoff for Ardrahan
with Ahascragh/Fohenagh. Even though it was such an important game the
match lacked a real championship cut early on. Ardrahan started the
brighter and were off the mark with a point from play by wing forward
Brian Murtagh after two minutes. Centre forward Jonathan Glynn then
pointed a free to put Ardrahan 2 up before two pointed free's from Brian
Molloy brought the teams level. Murtagh, who was proving to be a real
handful restored the Ardrahan advantage with a point from play after 10
mins. Conor O'Brien and Glynn then swapped pointed frees before a
scrambled goal from Shane Lawless on 17 mins put Kilnadeema/Leitrim
ahead for the first time. County minor panellist Cormac Diviney then
pointed a long range free for Ardrahan before Brian Molloy hit a good
point from play. two pointed frees from Glynn, the second which resulted
in a booking for Conal Whelan, restored parity. The whole Ardrahan half
back line chipped in with a point from play before Diviney pointed
another free. Brian Molloy completed the first half scoring with a point
from play to leave Ardrahan ahead 0.11 to 1.05 at the break.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim returned for the second half much more determined and
started off very well with two points from play from Shane Lawless
before Murtagh pointed for Ardrahan to extend their lead again. Conor
O'Brien responded with a pointed 65 before Murtagh replied again with a
pointed free. Conor O'Brien responded with a long range free before his
brother Martin, just on the field as a substitute, rattled the Ardrahan
net on 39 mins to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim two points up. Ardrahan
responded with another Murtagh point from play, a free from Diviney and
one from play by corner forward Whelan before Murtagh pointed a free to
restore a two point advantage. Three pointed frees from Conor O'Brien
regained the lead entering the last five minutes before Conal Whelan saw
red for a second yellow card. A pointed free from Glynn a minute from
the end restored parity before a point from play by the same player ,
three minutes into injury time won the game for Ardrahan. Ryan Murray
had a chance to steel it late on but Ardrahan goalie pulled off a
outstanding save. it was a heartbreaking way to lose after giving as
good as they got for the full game.

Clarenbridge prove a step too far for Under 12 team in semi final
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.02 Clarenbridge 1.05
Kilnadeema/Leitrim put up a battling performance in the Under 12 A
semi-final in Craughwell on Thursday last 13th August
, but came up short against a
physically bigger Clarenbridge team. Clarenbridge started the game on
the attack and were soon ahead through their sharpshooter Evan Niland
with a point from play. A point from a free by Niland followed before
Jack Kenny hit a good point from play to get Kilnadeema/Leitrim off the
mark. Niland then added another point from a free before wing forward
Anton Brennan put Clarenbridge three up with a point from play. Niland
then added a pointed free after Mark Lawless was deemed to have fouled
when he was more sinned against than sinner. This left the half time
score 0-5 to 0-1 in favour of Clarenbridge. Kilnadeema/Leitrim started
the second half with more purpose but were finding scores difficult to
come by. Unfortunately it was Clarenbridge who got off the mark when ,
after a mix up in the Kilnadeema/Leitrim defence , corner forward Peter
Finn was on hand to tap to the net. Kilnadeema/Leitrim continued to
battle and soon had a point on the board from Stephen Molloy who was now
operating at full forward. But this was to be the end of the scoring
even though K/L battled right to the end. Even though defeated great
credit must go to this team for the effort put in , even more remarkable
given the fact that 10 of the starting line up are eligible for Under 12
again next year.
Finally the standard of the Craughwell
pitch left a lot to be desired with grass at ankle height and no line
markings , especially for a county semi-final.

Championship progress in tatters for
Under 16 team as nine point lead is take away by Ahascragh/Fohenagh
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
3.14 Ahascragh/Fohenagh 4.14
Kilnadeema/Leitrim got very little time to get over their heavy defeat
to Athenry when they took on Ahascragh/Fohenagh in Ahascragh on Thursday
August 6th.
This was a must win game for both sides and it turned out
to be a classic. Ahascragh opened the scoring with a goal in the first
minute through corner forward Mannion. Cillian Dowling and Shane Lawless
then shot points in quick succession. After Ahascragh scored a point
Brian Molloy made his mark with a goal and a point, Steven Bruton then
scored a point as Kilnadeema/Leitrim took over. Shane Lawless soon added
another goal. Points followed from Steven Bruton, Conor O'Brien and
Brian Molloy. After another Ahascragh point Shane Lawless and Ryan
Murray added two more points. Molloy added another pointed free before
Ahascragh finished strongly to leave the score reading 2.10 to 1.06.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim left their good form in the dressing room as
Ahascragh took over in the early stages of the second half adding two
goals and four points without reply and lead 3.10 to 2.10 early
on. Team captain Niall Haverty settled the sinking ship with a goal to
level up the game again. Brian Molloy swopted points soon after. Ryan
Murray and Brian Molloy then pointed to give their team back the lead.
Ahascragh were not finished though and soon scored a killer goal
and a point as Brian Molloy scored another point to leave the final
score 4.14 to 3.14. A great game was poor consolation to
Kilnadeema/Leitrim as their championship lay in tatters.

Under 16 team blown away by strong
Athenry side
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.09 Athenry 3.19
Kilnadeema/Leitrim welcomed Athenry to Leitrim for the third round of
the Under 16 championship on Bank Holiday Monday August 3rd,
maybe they
extended that welcome too much as Athenry preceded to blow
Kilnadeema/Leitrim away with a top display of hurling. Athenry
opened the scoring after a minute through corner forward Mullins before
Conor O'Brien equalised through a free. Athenry then added two points by
the 8th minute. Shane Lawless then shot over a point for
Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Mullins and Lawless then swopted points as the game
livened up. Shane Lawless was causing many problems at this stage for
Athenry and soon shot a goal to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim ahead 1.03 to
0.03. Athenry's response was superb as they added two goals and a points
by the twenth minute. They then added two more points before Brian
Molloy pointed a free. Brian again and another Conor O'Brien point
left the half time score reading 2.10 to 1.06. Things got even worse in
the second half even though Athenry lost their centre half forward after
2 mins when he was sent off. Athenry added two m ore points before
Cillian Dowling opened Kilnadeema/Leitrim's second half account.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim were making no progress though as Athenry added
another goal and two points before Shane Lawless added another point.
Athenry added the final score of the game to leave them comfortable
ahead by sixteen points 3.19 to 1.09.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.06 Turloughmore 0.03
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Turloughmore meet in the championship quarter
final in Kilconieron on Saturday July 25th.
Evan though
playing with a strong breeze in the first half, it was Turloughmore who
made the better start. However despite having all the possession they
failed to trouble the scorekeeper and eventually it was
Kilnadeema/Leitrim's Mikie Lynch who pointed from playing one of their
first attacks. Kevin Roche then pointed a free before Aaron Murray
pointed from play in what was to be the score of the half. Turloughmore
must have been disappointed to have failed to score in the half despite
the majority of possession but great credit must go to the
Kilnadeema/Leitrim backs for keeping them at bay. Turloughmore started
the second half as they did the first with majority of play and within 7
mins they were level with a pointed free from Sean Loftus, a point from
play by Cathal Whelan and another free from Loftus. At this stage it
looked ominous for Kilnadeema/Leitrim but they buckled down and there
followed a period where their was no scoring until eventually Mikie
Lynch put over a great point from play. Towards the end a long
speculative shot from Mikie Lynch deceived the Turloughmore goalie and
ended up in the net to leave the score 1.06 to 0.03, and despite late
pressure from Turloughmore this was to be the final score.

Under 16's draw with Loughrea in
wonderful encounter
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
1.15 Loughrea 0.18
Near
neighbours and great rivals Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Loughrea meet the
third round of the Under 16A championship at St Brendan's Park on Monday
July 20th and gave us a wonderful game witch fittingly ended all square
at the finish.
Loughrea started much the brighter and soon moved into a
four points to no score lead after only 5 mins. Most prominent in this
period and throughout the first half was full forward Sean Sweeney who
made and took scores very well. Sean scored two of those points, one
from play with Niall Shaughnessy and Shane Dolan getting the other two
as Kilnadeema/Leitrim found it hard to get up to the pace of the game.
Brian Molloy eventually opened his sides account after 7 mins with a
point from play. Conor O'Brien soon halved the lead with a pointed free
from over 80 yards. Then the really important score of the half
arrived when after corner forward Tommy Mottrom hit the crossbar with a
great shot, goal poacher Brian Molloy followed up to score a vital goal
and put Kilnadeema/Leitrim ahead for the first time. Loughrea were stung
by this and soon took the lead again through Sean Sweeney and Conor
Quinn points. They got a vital grip on the game again at this stage and
soon added two more points through Shaughnessy and Dolan to lead
by three after 21 mins. Shane Lawless who was having a quiet game
up to this
point shot over a brilliant point a minute later to close the gap. Brian
Molloy then availed of some poor discipline to score two points in quick
succession to level the game again. Loughrea were still on top in many
area's and added two further points before half time through Sean
Sweeney and Conor O'Brien. Jacques Chahin then scored a wonderful point
right on half time for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. The scoring was not done yet
as both Sweeney and Molloy shared pointed free's to leave the score 0.11
to 1.07 at halftime. The second half was even more entertaining with end
to end action by two very committed teams. Jamie Ryan took over the free
taking momentarily for Loughrea and soon pointed a close in shot.
Martin
O'Brien who had come at half time then scored a lovely point from play
to close the gap again. Niall Haverty who was really coming into his own
at centre half forward and scored a great point after 4 mins. Shane
Lawless then put Kilnadeema/Leitrim one up with a good strike from
midfield. Conor Quinn struck over the equaliser again for Loughrea
after 10 mins. Loughrea were then back in front again with a point from
play from Sean Sweeney. Conor O'Brien who was playing really well at
centre half back struck over his second point, this time from a 65 to
level up the game yet again. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were really applying the
pressure now and went two ahead by the 24th minute with points from
Brian Molloy and Niall Haverty. Molloy and Sweeney then swopted points,
Sweeney's from play. Loughrea were not giving up on this game without a
real battle and drew level again after 28 mins, both scored from Sean
Sweeney. The game was really on edge now and as we entered added time
Brian Molloy held his nerve to shoot over the lead point. Some how
Loughrea gathered the energy again to force a foul and a free in which
Sean Sweeney obliged to draw the game 1.15 to 0.18. This game will both
teas great confidence in the future games.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.09 Athenry 1.00
Kilnadeema/Leitrim completed their Under 12 group campaign with a
6 point victory over Athenry in Leitrim on Sunday July 19th.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim started the game facing the elements but playing with
the hill and were soon ahead with a point from play from Kevin Roche.
However Athenry who had lost all their games to date, were soon back in
the game with a superbly struck goal from their corner forward Stephen
madden. from there to the interval Kilnadeema/Leitrim took over and a
string of fine points from play by Kevin Roche, Aaron Murray, Kevin
again, Jack Kenny and a brace from Mikie Lynch had the hosts 0.07 to
1.00 ahead at half time. Athenry came more into the game on the
changeover but could not breach the Kilnadeema/Leitrim rearguard. Two
further points from play by Mikie Lynch and Jack Kenny completed the
scoring to leave the final score reading 0.09 to 1.00. The results means

two teams in group B - final positions to be decided on scoring

Donoghue's goals turn over Carnmore in
minor championship
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.09 Carnmore 2.07
Kilnadeema/Leitrim minor team finally got to play their last group game
against Carnmore in Craughwell on Friday July 17th.
This was a chance
for this team to get revenge over Carnmore for their defeat to the same
team in the Under 16 quarter final two years previous. In a game that
Kilnadeema/Leitrim dominated for long stages only to struggle badly in
front of goal, missing at least four goals in the first half. Mark Kelly
opened the scoring with a point from play after five minutes, and the
team doubled the lead soon after with a Martin Costello point
after being set up by a great pass from Gary Curley. Carnmore who had
the breeze with them in the opening half soon put their stamp on the
half with a quick goal and a point by the twenth first minute. They then
added a point from play to lead by three, before Dara Herlihy
fired over a point, also from play. Gary Curley then pointed from a free
on 24 mins. Carnmore finished the stronger and added two more points
from play to lead by three at the break 1.04 to 0.04. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
were very disappointed with the first half display and made a few vital
changes in the team at the break which made a big difference. Damien
Donoghue who had a disappointing first half performance really came into
his own on the turn over. First after two minutes when he struck a
wonderful goal to level up the game. Carnmore hung in their though and
soon added two points from free's to lead again. Padraig Stapleton then
struck a free from midfield which was finished to the net by Damien
Donoghue again after 12 mins. Padraig then gave a wonderful pass to Dara
Herlihy to score a point from play. Alvin Mitchell added another point,
again from play to open up a three point lead. We then were treated to
the best score of the game when Damien Donoghue struck over a great
point. Dara Herlihy added a wonderful point after 17 mins to open up a 5
point lead. Carnmore kept coming forward and struck for a second goal
after 21 mins from a close in free. The pressure was really on now and
they added a point from a free soon after to cut the gap to one. Paul
Howard then came into his own with some great saves before Gary Curley
shot over the last point of the game from play to leave the final score
reading 2.09 to 2.07. This was a much better performance and will give
hope for the future and the preliminary quarter final.

Under 12's come undone in long grass
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
2.01 Castlegar 1.04
Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 12 team visited Castlegar, one of the
traditional; clubs in Galway under age hurling in the
third round of the championship on Thursday July 9th. They were greeted
by a very poorly prepared pitch with over 4" grass on it was a
disgrace. Castlegar were much the better in the first half and will be
disappointed with their score of only one point. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had
a goal disallowed for square ball. Jack
Coyne shot over their point. Coyne shot over two quick points in the
second half to leave a goal between the sides. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
kept plugging away and soon were level through a Kevin Roche goal.
Castlegar kept pressing forward and soon cancelled out that goal through
Darren Murphy. Kilnadeema/Leitrim came right back and soon scored a
wonderful goal from Luke Devine to level up the game with 8 mins played
in the second half. We then were treated to a wonderful point from Mikie
Lynch who ran right through the Castlegar defence to score. Castlegar
were not to be denied though and Jack Coyne had the final say with a
pointed free near the finish. The final score reading 2.01 to 1.04. This
was a great test by one of the favourites for the championship.

Under 16's make winning start to A
Championship against Turloughmore
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
3.15 Turloughmore 1.07
Kilnadeema/Leitrim took their place in the Under 16 A championship for
the first time ever when they played their first game in the group
against Turloughmore
in Leitrim on Monday July 6th. On a wet and Windy evening, Turloughmore
were first to have the elements. Shane Lawless, who has just returned
from an Appendix operation was quick off the mark with a point from
play. Stephen O'Dea soon replied for Turloughmore with a point from play
and they took the lead four minutes later through a Mark Cunningham
point from play. Shane Lawless had it all level again a minute later
with another good point. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had the first real break of
the game on 13 mins when after a great build up involving Stephen Bruton
and Niall Haverty, under 14 star Brian Molloy was at the end to score a
wonderful goal. Team captain Niall Haverty then added a point from play
as the gap began to open up. Any chance of a Turloughmore comeback was
further damaged two minutes later when Shane Lawless took a pass from
Tommy Mottrom before crashing home a second goal for his team and a lead
of seven points. Further points followed from Brian Molloy with a free
and Shane Lawless again from play. Kevin Culkin eventually got a
Turloughmore point from a free after 22 mins. Brian Molloy then
belittled his young years with two wonderful points from play. Shane
Lawless then added another point before Turloughmore got the two final
scored of the half from Kevin Culkin to leave the half time score
reading 2.08 to 0.05. Turloughmore came out for the second half
determined to make a game of it and soon had a goal on the board through
Stephen O'Dea. Normal service was resumed a few minutes later when Brian
Molloy pointed from play. Stephen Bruton then shot over a very good
point. Brian Molloy added a pointed free soon after before Stephen
Bruton struck for a third goal of the evening for his team after 13
mins. Cillian Dowling, who had just been introduced then scored a point
and this was quickly added to by another Shane Lawless point from play.
Niall Haverty added another point on 26 mins. Turloughmore added two
more points before the finish. it was fitting that Brian Molloy, who was
wonderful all through should have the last score of the game, another
point from play to leave the final score line reading 3.15 to
1.07. This was a great start for the former Under 14 B champions of 2007
and certainly gives the team a good chance of making good progress in
the group.

Disappointing week for Intermediate team
as results go against them
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.10 Clarenbridge 2.10
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 5.07 Castlegar 5.13
Having already qualified for the quarter finals of the Intermediate
championship,
Kilnadeema/Leitrim played their final two games in the
group over a three day period on June 22nd and 26th. First up were
Clarenbridge in Athenry on a very warm evening. With Clarenbridge also
qualified, it was a very open game all through. County
star David Tierney started very brightly and shot over the first two
points of the game. After Kevin Conlon opened the 'Bridge's account with
a pointed free, Tom Tierney shot over a lovely point from play. Conlon
and Tierney then swopted pointed free's before Clarenbridge shot home
the opening goal which was created expertly by Gerry Spellman for Kevin
Conlon to goal. Conlon was proving a real problem for Kilnadeema/Leitrim
and soon scored two more points from free's. David Tierney with a third
point from play and a Tom Tierney free closed the gap after 25 mins.
Kevin Conlon again and centre half back Peter Burke then shot over
pointed free's before David Tierney again with his fourth point from
play left the half time score reading 0.07 to 1.06. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
got the perfect start to the second half when Fergal Nevin got on the
end of a Tom Tierney free to goal in the opening minute. Eamon Hyland
then pointed from play. Tom added a pointed free before Bernie Conlon
shot home a second goal for Clarenbridge after 12 mins. Padraig
Cormican, Kevin Conlon and John Cannon added further points as
Clarenbridge sensed victory. With Kilnadeema/Leitrim in real trouble now
with 5 mins left Mike Flanagan stepped up to the mark with a brilliant
goal to level up the game again. Tom Tierney then shot over what looked
like the winning point from play on 29 mins. Clarenbridge were not to be
denied and fittingly Kevin Conlon put over a 65 right on time to draw
the match at 2.10 each.

After this game Kilnadeema/Leitrim headed for Craughwell three
days later to take on Castlegar
in the final game in the group. It would take a miracle for Castlegar to
stay in the championship as their scoring average was very poor.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim never reached the heights needed for championship
hurling and were in trouble for a lot of this game retiring level at the
break 2.03 to 1.06. The goals were scored by new kids on the block Dara
Herlihy and Eoin O'Toole. Castlegar completely took over after half time
and lead by twelve points with ten minutes to play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
put in a final spurt and shot three goals in the second period,
two from David Tierney and another from Dara Herlihy as the final
whistle sounded and a six point defeat the result. While it was hard to
get up for this game, it still meant a victory was very important if
they wanted to finish top of the group. This they did not achieve.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.04 Liam Mellows 2.15
Kilnadeema/Leitrim minor team already qualified took on Liam Mellows in
Ballyloughane on Friday June 23rd in the Minor B championship.
Even though short
a few players Kilnadeema/Leitrim never reached any greats heights and
were completely out played by the home side. Mellows took an early three
point lead from Michael Clune, and two from John O'Halloran before
Dara Herlihy opened his sides account with a point from a free after 13
mins. Liam Mellows who have a very big strong physical team took over
from here to half time and added points at will under little resistance.
Danny Breen and two more John O'Halloran points had five in it after 21
mins. Sean Morrissey then shot over a great point before Dara scored a
second free. Mellows finished the strongest with further points from
Alan Clancy and John O'Halloran to leave it 0.09 to 0.02 at the break.
We expected a strong Kilnadeema/Leitrim revival in the second half, but
it never arrived. Danny and Dean Breen and John O'Halloran soon
added more points for Liam Mellows before Dara Herlihy shot over another
pointed free. Alan Clancy then broke through for a Mellows goal after 10
mins to put this game to bed. John O'Halloran then scored a lineball as
everything was going right for the City side, and to prove this point
Dean Breen did likewise soon after. Dean then added a second goal after
20 mins. Mark Kelly finally got Kilnadeema/Leitrim's first score from
play after 22 mins, a point. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were now trying a little
harder and got some reward after 26 mins when substitute Stephen Farrell
goaled. Liam Mellows had the final say when they scored a point right at
the end to leave the final score reading 1.04 to 2.15.This was a totally
unexpected performance from this team who must now return to the
drawing board and start again.

Gort no match
for confident Under 12 team
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.08 Gort 0.00
Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 12 team played their their second game in the
group when they entertained Gort in Leitrim on Monday June 22nd.
Gort who had a strong physical team made the better start
and missed two goals in the opening minutes. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
eventually got to grips with them mainly through their half back line
and Midfield getting on top. Then after a few missed chances
Kilnadeema/Leitrim opened the scoring when full forward Kevin Roche shot
over a good point from play. Kevin was to continue to torment the Gort
defence during the rest of the first half and he doubled their lead 4
mins later after Colm Callagy had a good shot saved by the goalkeeper.
With both midfielders Niall Broderick and Dylan Towolowi now on top, it
was no surprise when Dylan shot over a brilliant point two minutes
later. Kevin Roche added two more points. one from play, before Jack
Kenny added another point also from play. Kevin Roche fittingly added
the last score of the half, a point from play when a goal seemed on to
leave the half time score reading 0.07 to 0.00. Any hope Gort had of a
comeback were dashed a minute into the second half when a low shot from
Arron Murray creped in at the post for a goal. Kevin Roche soon added
another point from play. Hard to believe this was the last score of the
game as Substitutes were soon introduced leaving the final score reading
1.08 to no score. This was a very confident performance and it looks
good for the rest of the championship.

Under 12 team off to winning start
against Oranmore/Maree
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.05 Oranmore/Maree 1.04
Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 12 team got their championship campaign up and
running for the 2009 season
when they took on Oranmore/Maree in Oranmore on Wed June
16th. The game was played on a bright windy evening on a pitch where the
grass was much too long. Kilnadeema/Leitrim fielding two of the first
fifteen on the victorious Under 14 team, namely Ciaran Connor and Jack
Kenny. They played against the breeze in the first half and still lead
by 2.02 to 1.01 at the break. An early goal and a point by Jack Kenny
gave them a great start. Oranmore/Maree replied with a point from Ross
Malone. Kilnadeema/Leitrim continued to dominate and Arran Murray soon
shot over a brilliant point. A short time later Gavin Kenny at corner
forward scored a second goal for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Oranmore/Maree
stayed in touch with a goal of their own from Steven Cummins. to leave
four points between the sides at the break. Kilnadeema/Leitrim with the
breeze in the second half were always in control with Kevin Roche
extending their lead with an early pointed free after one minute. Mark
Lawless then put over a lovely point after 4 mins. Matt Malone replied
with a pointed free. The game was as good as over after 8 mins when
after good work by Niall Broderick, Mikie Lynch goaled. Jack Kenny then
added a point from play. The final two scored of the half were both
scored by Matt Malone ( son of former Galway star Pat Malone), to leave
the final score reading 3.05 to 1.04. The noticeable feature about this
game was the strong physical approach of Oranmore/Maree which left a few
players with bad injuries. This game will get the team ready for tougher
games ahead.

Junior B team back on track
after easy win over Killimordaly
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.12 Killimordaly 1.05
Kilnadeema/Leitrim Junior B team got back on track in group B of the
championship with a comprehensive victory over Killimordaly in Duggan
Park, Ballinasloe, on Sunday June 14th.
Having lost to
Oranmore/Maree last time out, it was important to get back to winning
ways. Alan Flaherty opened the scoring inside the first minute. Brian
Costello followed up with a similar score a minute later. Kevin Molloy
then shot his first point from a free after 4 mins. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
were now well on top and Eoin O'Toole scored a lovely point from
play a minute later. Alan Flaherty then scored his second point which
left it a six point game in as many minutes. Killimordaly on their first
attack shocked Kilnadeema/Leitrim with a goal from Tom Monaghan. Tony
Kelly and Paul Laffey then swopted points, before Tony again and Kevin
Molloy with a free closed the first half scoring at 0.08 to 1.01. Kevin
Molloy soon opened the second half scoring with a free before Laffey
replied again for Killimordaly. Brian Costello then scored a good point
from play. Killimordaly replied with a point from play before Eoin
O'Toole crashed home a brilliant goal after 9 mins. Kevin Molloy then
had a goal disallowed. Killimordaly kept in touch with a free before

Oranmore/Maree deserving winners as Junior B team disappoint in
opening championship game
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.10 Oranmore/Maree 1.14
Kilnadeema/Leitrim after two
false starts finally opened their championship campaign in Junior B when
they took on Oranmore/Maree in Ardrahan on Saturday June 6th.
Having had a very successful league so far in 2009, hopes
were high for this team but sadly this was not so as they never reached
those heights despite having a lot of the play. After playing with the
breeze in the opening half Kilnadeema/Leitrim had a slender one point
lead at the break 1.06 to 1.05, the goal coming from full forward Kevin
Molloy from play. With only four points to show for their efforts in the
second half, Oranmore/Maree were always in the driving seat, winning on
a final score line of 1.14 to 1.10. Their are still plenty opportunities
to qualify from this group.
Scorers: Kevin
Molloy 1.04, Michael Regan 0.02, Gary Curley 0.02, Tony Kelly 0.01,

Big Disappointment as Under 21
team lose Quarter final to Padraig Pearses by a single point
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
2.08 Padraig Pearses 1.12
Report from John Rafferty
Kilnadeema/Leitrim had victory snatched
from their fingertips in the dying moments of the U21B Championship
quarter final, played in Duggan Park Ballinasloe, on
Saturday last, May 9th. The post-mortems into this defeat
will surely be long and hard because for long stretches of this match
they were in complete control, as the younger lighter Pearses side, had
no answer to the power pace and hunger of the fired-up
Kilnadeema/Leitrim men. They were out of the traps in flash and by
the mid-point of the first half had opened up a 4 points to 2 lead with
Padraic Stapleton and Brian Gardener lording it at full and centre back
respectively. The latter in fact opened the scoring with a placed ball
into a stiff breeze from half way. At the other end of the field, Dara
Herlihy and Eoin O'Toole had the Pearses rearguard in real trouble, the
former scoring two from placed balls with the latter shooting a fine
effort from play. The winners only response coming from an Emmett Ward
free and a neat Niall Geilston point from play. It was all
Kilnadeema/Leitrim now and in the space of a minute, the twin
assassins, Herlihy and O'Toole, combined for what looked like two match
winning goals. The St Brigid's student made the decisive break and
passed to the full forward who finished with aplomb on both occasions,
to give his side an 8pt advantage, midway through the first half. Stung
by this reversal, Pearses came to life outscoring their opponents by
4pts to 2 from there to the break. Ward with two frees, Dermot Skehill
and Keith Donnellan, one each from play getting the scores, with
Brian Gardener landing his second of the day from half-way and Gary
Winters from play responding for Kilnadeema/Leitrim , to leave them 6pts
to the good with wind advantage to come in the second
period. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were slow coming out after the break and
Paul Howard was picking the ball out of the net after 30 seconds. Conor
O'Grady first timed to the net when a long range Ward free dropped
short. Normal service appeared to be resumed, 4 minutes later when Brian
Gardener shot his third, this time from a 65. Pearses had other ideas
however, their backs got to grips with the rampant Kilnadeema/Leitrim
forwards while up front the attackers were creating more space and
hurling much better playing into the elements Niall Geilston and Emmett
Ward reduced the margin to two with two great strikes from play, before
the Kilnadeema/Leitrim free taker Dara Herlihy had what turned out
to be their last score after only eleven second half minutes. Pearses now
had the wind in their sails, Niall Skehill was hurling up a storm,
landing two super scores from distance, while Emmett Ward broke free
from the shackles of the tight marking Stapleton to land an outrageous
strike from the left touch line. Connor O'Grady shot Pearses into the
lead for the first time in the match, with three minutes of normal time
on the clock. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had a number of chances to level
matters but a combination of poor shooting and dogged but disciplined
Pearses defence denied them. The final whistle sounded with the score
board reading 2.08 to 1.12. This was a very disappointing defeat,
especially as the team had to line out with Gearoid Whelan and Ruairi
Costello due to injury. With most of the team underage again next year,
this was a good learning experience.

High energy performance sees
Kilnadeema/Leitrim record second win in a week over Ballindereen.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.17 Ballindereen 0.11
Championship
hurling as you would expect between two of the fancy teams for the
Intermediate championship was on show in Loughrea on Sunday May 3rd,
as
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ballindereen squared up in an absorbing, physical
game with Kilnadeema/Leitrim enjoying an unexpected nine point victory.
A victory which ensured qualification for the knockout stages after only
two games. Their were big expectations of Ballindereen, who only lost
their senior status last year, but on the evidence of this performance,
they have a lot of work to do to have any hope of returning to senior
level in the near future. Tom Tierney, who had a wonderful game at wing
forward opened the scoring with a pointed free in the first minute.
Keith Carr replied soon after for Ballindereen with a point from play.
Alan Martyn put them ahead with a good point from play shortly
after. This was to be the only time they lead in the game as
Kilnadeema/Leitrim took over. Tom Tierney with a point from play
levelled matters again before Eamon Hyland shot a brilliant point after
been set up by the hard working Shane Flaherty. Brian Daniels and David
Tierney soon shot points from play as they opened up a gap of three.
Barry Coen then shot over a very disputable point for Ballindereen with
the Umpires not agreeing on weather it was a score or not. Tom Tierney,
who caused a lot of problems to the Ballindereen defence all day soon
shot over a mighty point from near the sideline after 14 minutes. Keith
Carr kept Ballindereen in the game with another point from play after 17
mins. Enda Fanning, who has been the find of the year for
Kilnadeema/Leitrim shot over a lovely point a minute later. David
Tierney and Barry Coen, both with their second points of the day left
three between the sides after 22 mins. Tom Tierney shot over his fourth
point on 25 minutes, again from play. Keith Connolly then added a point
for the south Galway side before Niall Tierney hit a great point off the
ground. Alan Martyn had the last say of the first half right on the
break the leave the score board reading 0.10 to 0.07. Tom Tierney
started off where he left off with another pointed free a minute into
the second half. Then on seven minutes both teams were reduced to
fourteen men when Enda Fanning and Colm Meehan saw red for a striking
offence. Tom Tierney added another point from a free after 9 mins as
scores became harder to find. Pakie Carr came up from wing back to open
Ballindeeren's account in the second half with a point after 10 minutes.
Tom Tierney quickly replied for Kilnadeema/Leitrim with another point
from play. Then we had to wait eight minutes before Shane Coen shot over
a Ballindereen point. Fergal Nevin was now introduced for
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and made an instant impact as he got on the end of a
loose ball in the square to crash home a vital goal and end
Ballindeeren's challenge after 24 mins. Shane Coen shot over another
point from a free two minutes later. Kilnadeema/Leitrim finished the
stronger and shot four points to one in reply before the finish, first
through Tom Tierney from play, which was quickly added to by Eamon
Hyland, Sean Burke and Eamon again to a lone reply from Shane Coen for
Ballindereen. Peter Murphy blew the final whistle shortly after on a
final score of 1.17 to 0.11. This was a very pleasing performance and a
improvement again from the previous week against Killimor. Next up
Castlegar in two weeks.

Impressive performance by minor team
against Ballindereen
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.15 Ballindereen 2.08
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ballindereen meet in very wet conditions in the
second minor championship group game in Ballindereen on Wednesday April 29th.
In a very
competitive game Kilnadeema/Leitrim put in a very impressive first half
performance to lead by eleven points at the break. Shane Lawless opened
the scoring after a minute with a lovely point from play. Mark Kelly, in
a new role of corner forward soon shot home a brilliant goal. Damien
Donoghue added a point from play a minute later as all the full forward
line had scored by the fourth minute. Kevin Lane opened Ballindeeren's
account with a free on 5 mins, before Kilnadeema/Leitrim scored another
goal, this time from Shane Lawless after brilliant work from Niall
Haverty and Dara Herlihy.
Kevin Lane
added another free a minute later as scores continued to pile up. Dara
Herlihy with two points, one from play and a 65 left his side eight
points ahead after 10 mins.
After Paul Howard had made a great save, Dara added another free.
Ballindereen added a point from play before Damien Donoghue got his
second point from play. Niall Haverty and Dara Herlihy then added points
from play after 21 mins before captain Alvin Mitchell got in on the act
with a lovely point from play. Kevin Lane added two more points from
free's for Ballindereen before substitute Cathal King got a brilliant
point on his introduction to leave the half time score 2.10 to
0.05.Ballindeeren opened the scoring in the second half before Martin
Costello shot over a inspirational point after 10 mins. The defence were
under much more pressure now, but were playing very well. Kevin Lane
added a point from play before Mark Kelly shot a brilliant goal to
really kill off the game. Cathal King soon added a point from play
before Damien Donoghue shot a fourth goal after 17 mins. Dara Herlihy
shot over a lovely point soon after before Mark Lane shot a goal
for Ballindereen. He added another point soon after. Cathal King with
his third point and Martin Costello with his second point near the
end. Kevin Lane, who was very good for Ballindereen shot another goal
right on full time to leave the final score reading 4.14 to 2.08. This
was certainly more like it by this team and sets them up nicely for the
break.

Intermediate
team off to a winning start against Killimor
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.12 Killimor 0.13
The first real signs of Summer usually arrives with the start of the
Intermediate championship in Galway,
but you certainly
wouldn't think so in April, 2009, as a very wet weekend greeted
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Killimor when they contested the opening round in
Ballinasloe on Sunday April 26th. This game which was fixed for the
previous day only to been called off due to heavy rain, was played in
driving rain and wind. Michael Dervan opened the scoring with a
point from a free in the opening minute for Killimor. Tom Tierney
replied with three points in a row, all from placed balls by the 11th
minute. Shane Duane with a point from play for Killimor reduced to lead
to one by the 16th minute. Michael Dervan leveled up the game for the
only time a minute later, this time from play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
responded with two points, the first from play from Shane Flaherty and
then a 60 mtr free from Tom Tierney after 20mins. Robert Mitchell and
Tom Tierney swopted points within the next five minutes, both from play.
Kevin Callanan kept Killimor right in the game with another point from
play before Tom Tierney pointed a free. With only two points between the
sides coming close to half time, a go |
