Galway put up great show but surrender in final ten minutes.

Galway 3.13 Kilkenny 2.20

Niall Healy scores Galway's third goal

All-Ireland champions Kilkenny made it through to another Leinster SHC final, but Galway announced their arrival in the east with a bold proclamation of intent. The Tribesmen, with a 2-09 tally from Joe Canning, threatened to shock the Cats, but the legend that is the current Kilkenny side stood firm and killed the game off with a devastating late scoring burst. A crowd of 15,150 at O'Connor Park in Tullamore was treated to a thrilling game of high quality hurling. In the end, John McIntyre was left to depend too heavily on the brilliant Canning for scores, while Brian Cody had magnificent marksmen in Henry Shefflin (0-10), Eoin Larkin and Aidan Fogarty. Galway had their supporters in raptures for the first five glorious minutes, during which they raced into a 1-03 to 0-01 lead. And it was Canning who did all that early damage to a nervous looking Cats defence. After stroking a couple of points, he darted off on a diagonal run before lashing the sliotar past PJ Ryan for a brilliant goal. Shefflin's accuracy from frees steadied Kilkenny nerves, but by the end of the opening quarter, they still looked somewhat shaky and unusually unsure of themselves. But JJ Delaney won a couple of important balls ahead of Canning, and the confidence began to permeate the rest of the team. Shefflin's perfect pass gave Martin Comerford the chance of a goal, but his shot zipped just wide at the far post. Shefflin again and Aidan Fogarty added points, but canning once again responded to keep the Tribesmen in front. That was until the All-Ireland champions produced a typical blast, with two goals in as many minutes. Richie Power punished indecision in the Galway defence to hit the first from close range on 28 minutes, and it was Power who turned creator for Eddie Brennan to net the second. Brian Cody's men turned around with a 2-07 to 1-08 lead, but a foul on Niall Healy gave Canning the chance to blast a 20-metre free to the net three minutes into the second half. Five minutes later they had the ball in the net again, Healy scooping home from a Damien Hayes assist.Galway now led by five points, and Kilkenny appeared to be on the ropes, but they held their nerve and Shefflin provided the scoring class, along with Aidan Fogarty.Without any sign of panic, they clawed their way back, and it was Eoin Larkin's long-range point which brought the sides level with 10 minutes to play.Larkin edged the Cats back in front, and Galway's character was now under serious question. The Connacht men were reduced to 14 when substitute Richie Murray received a straight red card, and Larkin continued to float over delightful scores as a brave Galway challenge gave way to the masters.

Galway overcome Sligo in close call
Galway 1.13 Sligo 0.12

Joe Bergin inaction against Sligo

Galway are into the Connacht Senior Football Championship Final after a hard-fought win over Sligo at Markievicz Park. In truth, former Tribal star Kevin Walsh could easily have put one
over on his native county, for his Yeats warriors played enough
football and showed sufficient passion to win this one. The fact that Liam Sammon's side scored 1-01 in stoppage time to deny the home side the replay that they probably deserved speaks volumes for the difficulty Galway experienced against the NFL Division Four champions. Padraic Joyce and Sean Armstrong used craft and pace to engineer a couple of early scores, and when Joyce skipped past Ross Donavan to shoot his second, the Tribesmen were on a roll. Wing back Gareth Bradshaw landed a long range effort, and a superb effort from Armstrong made it 0-05 to 0-01 on 14 minutes, and Sligo supporters in the new stand were beginning to fear the worst. Eamonn O'Hara was called out from full forward to lend a hand at
midfield, and Sean Davey responded with a point when with a little more composure he might have hit the net. Armstrong also had a sight at goal, but opted to pop the ball over the bar on end of a quick-handed move. Michael Meehan scored his only point of the first half from a free, and Cormac Bane made it 0-08 to 0-02 to add to the Yeats woes. But in the final seven minutes of the half, Sligo drew inspiration
from somewhere. Mark Breheny notched a couple of scores and defenders Ross Donovan and Jonathan Davey swung over superb points from the right wing. At half-time, they were looking at a manageable 0-8 to 0-6 deficit,
with wind advantage still to come. And substitute Kenneth Sweeney forced Adrian Faherty into a superb save within seconds of the restart, with David Kelly converting the resultant 45 to lave just a point between the sides. But no sooner had Adrian Marren brought the sides level, than Sligo were down to 14 men as centre back Neil Ewing picked up a second yellow card. Just a minute later, however, a straight red to Galway midfielder
Garry O'Donnell restored parity. Meehan finally got some space to shoot a couple of points from play, but Sligo, with Donovan and Jonathan Davey performing heroic roles and Alan Costello probing, refused to lie down. Sub Stephen Coen brought them level midway through the half, but once again Galway pulled two clear through Joyce. Another push from the home side saw Kelly land a couple of frees to equalise, and as the game slipped into stoppage time, talk of a replay was on everyone's lips. But the Tribesmen laid on a devastating finale. Joe Bergin slotted the lead point, and Joyce turned over possession to send Armstrong in for a last gasp goal.

Sligo: P Greene, C Harrison, N McGuire, R Donovan (0-01), M McNamara, N Ewing, J Davey (0-01), T Taylor, E Mullen, E O'Hara, A Costello, S Davey (0-01), D Kelly (0-04, 2f 1 '45'), M Breheny (0-02, 2f), A Marren (0-02, 2f).

Game by game account of the wonderful journey which has brought Kilnadeema/Leitrim to the Feile na nGeal title 2009

One of the most amazing and wonderful stories of both Galway and Kilnadeema/Leitrim Juvenile hurling happened in Kenny Park, Athenry, on Saturday April 18th, 2009, when the Under 14 team claimed the premier competition in Juvenile hurling in the County, Feile Na nGeal for the first time ever after defeating Liam Mellows, and in doing so also won the first ever A championship title for the club at any level, a truly magnificent achievement. What is even more memorable was the quality of hurling displayed by this wonderful team blowing away the city side with some magic scores. Everybody in the club and in both Parish’s will now have to pinch him or herself as the club prepare to represent Galway in the All Ireland Feile Na nGeal championship, which is been held in Laois and Offaly, what a moment to look forward to. And now we look back at the games that brought us this famous victory.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.11 Ardrahan 1.01

With summer weather in the middle of March, everything was perfect for the opening round of the new Under 14 Feile na nGeal knockout competition when Kilnadeema/Leitrim travelled to Ardrahan to be hosted by the home team on Saturday March 21st.. With the team now competing in the A championship, they were expected to defeat the B opponents. Brian Molloy who has the experience of winning both Under 14 and Under 16 medals in the last two years along with many of his teammates was a thorn in Ardrahan's side from the off getting some great scores. Ardrahan got off to the perfect start with a pointed free right from the off. Brian Molloy was soon causing problems though as he goaled after three minutes. Tony Molloy got another soon after after a great passing move as the team opened up a early five point lead. Brian added three points in the opening half as well, one from play. Liam Kelly made it a Ballydugain scoring spree near the end of the half with a point from play as the half time score line read 2.05 to 0.01.The second half was not to get any better for Ardrahan as Brian Molloy continued to show all his wonderful skills adding two more goals, the first after only a minute and the second when he connected with a sixty five to goal. Brian added five more points, four from play in a brilliant performance. Liam Kelly added his second point of the game also from play before Ardrahan got a consolation goal near the end. The final score reading 4.11 to 1.01. This was a comfortable start to the competition and it a last sixteen game now on Monday week to look forward to.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 11.08 Ballinasloe 0.00

Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 14 team continued on the quest for a first ever Feile na nGeal title when they qualified for the quarter-finals after a very easy and comprehensive victory over Ballinasloe, who are a B team when they meet in Leitrim on Monday March 30th.This was always going to be a one-sided game between two sides with completely different ambitions for 2009. Liam Kelly opened the scoring with a goal after one minute followed by a   goal and a point from  captain Brian Molloy had Kilnadeema/Leitrim in control after only four minutes. Two Liam Kelly points either side of a brilliant Justin Moran goal, continued to open up the Ballinasloe defence after eight minutes. A Goal and two points from Jacques Chahin  and another major from Brian Molloy left the game truly over after 16 mins. Scores continued to flow up to half time with another goal coming this time from Jack Kenny, added to by another 1.02 from Brian Molloy left the half time score board reading 7.08 to no score. Justin Moran scored his second goal of the game just after half time to continue the scoring spree. Jack Kenny then added his second goal after 5 mins and this was followed by a Liam Kelly pointed free. Midfielder Martin O'Brien then got in on the act as he added two goals to finally finish the scoring on a final score line of 11.09 to no score for Ballinasloe. What this game did for either team, I just don't know.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 7.03 Carnmore 0.03

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 14 team hoped to go one stage further than last year when they contested the Feile Na nGeal quarter final against Carnmore, which was played in Kilconieron on Monday April 6th. Carnmore had already defeated a fancied Oranmore/Maree side and were expected to put up a serious challenge. This never materialized as Kilnadeema/Leitrim dominated from the start with a goal from full Forward Liam Kelly after only one minute following a pass from Brian Molloy, something they would repeat many times during the game. Ben Murray replied with a pointed free for Carnmore. Liam Kelly goaled again a minute later after a great run. Brian Molloy then took over and shot three goals and a point after 14 mins, one a brilliant strike into the top corner of the net. Ben Murray shot over another pointed free for Carnmore. Tony Molloy scored the final score of the first half, a point from play to leave the score line reading 5.02 to 0.02.Liam Kelly started off the second half just like he started the first with another goal. Tony Molloy added another goal after 3 mins. Brian Molloy added a point from a free two minutes later. we had to wait until 18 minutes for the next score, a point from Ben Murray, to finish the scoring in a quiet second period on a final score of 7.03 to 0.03. The team were now in to the semi-final for the first time ever against Loughrea.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.10 Loughrea 0.05

The meeting of neighbours and great rivals Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Loughrea took place in Ballinasloe on Tuesday April 14th for a place in the final of Feile Na nGeal. Loughrea having defeated favourites St Thomas in a previous round were expected to really put it up to Kilnadeema/Leitrim. This never happened as a disappointing town side were not up to it on the evening. Brian Molloy shot the two opening points of the game, both from play after two minutes. Jacques Chahin added another soon after to give his side a great start. The big break through took place after nine minutes when Liam Kelly goaled after a great run made by Martin O'Brien. Gearoid Loughnane finally opened Loughrea's account after 10 mins , a point from a free. Liam Kelly pointed again two minutes later. Brian Molloy with a point from a free and another point from play by Liam Kelly left the half time  score line 1.06 to 0.01.Loughnane got Loughrea off the mark early in the second half with another pointed free. Tony Molloy and Jack Kenny quickly added two more points from play for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Gearoid Loughnane, Loughrea's only scorer and all from free's added two. more points by 12 minutes. Brian Molloy soon pointed again from play. Loughnane pointed again for Loughrea before Brian Molloy closed the scoring with another point from a free to leave the final score line reading 1.10 to 0.05. And so the day finally arrived that every under 14 player in the county dreams about, to play in a Feile Na nGeal final, Saturday April 18th in Kenny Park, Athenry with Kilnadeema/Leitrim taking on city side Liam Mellows. Kilnadeema/Leitrim started as slight favourites and got off to the perfect start when Liam Kelly pointed after one minute. Brian Molloy, who was to give a man of the match performance soon doubled the lead with a point from play. A good start and it was to get a lot better a minute later when midfielder Jacques Chahin goaled after making a defence splitting run through the Liam Mellows defence, only to see his shot fumbled over the line by the Liam Mellows goalie Gary Donoghue. We had to wait eight minutes before Liam Kelly pointed again from play after great build up play from Jacques and Brian. David Doyle finally got Liam Mellows off the mark after 12 mins with a point from play. Adrian Morrissey pointed a free for Mellows a minute later to close the gap to four points. Tony Molloy settle his team again with a great point after a brilliant run from cousin Brian. Jacques Chahin, who had probably his best ever game for the club really put his mark on the final with a second goal on 18 minutes to really put the East Galway  in the driving seat. Brian Molloy added a 65 to close the scoring in the first half at 2.05 to 0.02. Liam Mellows would have the breeze in the second half and still had hopes of victory. Brian Molloy took off where he left off in the first half with another point from a free. The final nail in the Liam Mellows coffin arrived a minute later when Brian Molloy scored a brilliant goal to open up a thirteen point lead. Brian and Liam Kelly added a point each soon after, both from play. Adrian Morrissey tried his best to keep Liam mellows in the game and shot over three point, all from free's and David Doyle also added a point to close the gap. Kilnadeema/Leitrim's march to the Under 14 A championship final 2009

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 14 team got very little rest after their brilliant win in the Feile Na NGeal championship before they were back in action in the normal Galway Under 14 championship in which they were grouped with Craughwell, Gort, Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry and Turloughmore. Three teams were to come out of this group and qualify for the quarter finals. We now give you a brief run down on how those games went with report, scorers and team lineout.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.04 Craughwell 0.03

Kilnadeema/Leitrim, quick on the heels of their wonderfully successful weekend in Feile Na nGeal, which resulted in the title coming to the parish for the first time ever, took on Craughwell in the first round of the championship in Leitrim on Wednesday April 22nd. Tiredness was certainly evident in the first half as Craughwell dominated all over the field. Midfielder Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring with a point from play in the opening minute. Craughwell  created many chances, and but for great goalkeeping by Daniel Mottrom, they would be further ahead, but we went seventeen minutes without another score until Liam Kelly shot over a brilliant equaliser. This was the half time score, 0.01 to 0.01.The second half was more evenly balanced with Kilnadeema/Leitrim eventually getting on top. Craughwell started off the second half very well and quickly added two further points, a Peter Treacy point from play and a free from Patrick Prendergast. Ciaran Connor put in a vital block down after 5 mins to divert a certain goal and this was followed three minutes later by a brilliant goal from Brian Molloy, after he took a Dara O'Donoghue free out of the sky, turned and shot a cracker past the Craughwell goalkeeper. Molloy, who was well held in the first half was now winning a lot of ball and he soon shot over a point from a free. Brian then added a point from play after a great block down from Martin O'Brien on 18 minutes. Brian shot over a brilliant point from play as Craughwell struggled to cope with the speed and skill. The final score of the game was a second goal, again from Brian Molloy after a being brilliantly set up by Tony Molloy and Liam Kelly. This left the final score reading 2.04 to 0.03. This was a good game played between two very even teams.

Scorers: Brian Molloy 2.03, Liam Kelly 0.01.

Team Lineout: Daniel Mottrom, Ciaran Connors, Evan Curley, Paddy Halpin, Stephen Roche, Dara O'Donoghue, Glen Costello, Jacques Chahin, Martin O'Brien, Tony Molloy, Brian Molloy, Noel Farrell, Jack Kenny, Liam Kelly, Keith Callanan.

Quarter final
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.11 Cappataggle 1.05

We were now into the knockout stages of the championship and first up was a quarter final with neighbours Cappataggle in Loughrea on Thursday June 6th.
With the country in a heat wave, this game was played in very hot conditions. Daniel Nevin opened the scoring for Cappataggle after 2 mins as they opened the brighter. it took nearly ten  minutes for the next score as Brian Molloy pointed an equalizer from a free. This was followed immediately by a Brian Molloy goal. Kilnadeema/Leitrim now took over and Brian Molloy hit three further points by the 16th minute. Jacques Chahin also added a point during this period. Brian Molloy and Dara Dolan swopted points on the stroke of half time to leave the score board reading 1.06 to 0.02. Cappataggle came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half and soon added a goal and a point, both scored by Dara Dolan. Now the heat was turned up with only two points between the sides. Liam Kelly soon relieved some of the pressure with a goal after 6 mins and this was soon added to by another goal, this time from Brian Molloy. A neat Justin Moran goal left some daylight between the sides after 8 mins. Kilnadeema/Leitrim kept tagging on the points from here to the finish through Brian Molloy with four and  Martin O'Brien to  see out a comfortable enough victory by fifteen points, 4.11 to 1.05.

Semi-final
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.11 Turloughmore 2.03

Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Turloughmore clashed in the semi final of the championship on Monday June 8th in Loughrea in a repeat of the recent group game. This was a brilliant competitive and exciting game which could have gone either way. Liam Kelly, who was very good all through opened the scoring after a minute with a point from play. Turloughmore were now playing the better and soon equalised through Jamie Holland. Sean Linnane then put them ahead with a point from play. Liam Kelly was out in front again on 10 mins to shoot over another point and level up matters again. Turloughmore soon shocked Kilnadeema/Leitrim with a goal from  their centre half forward. Sean Linnane added a point soon after. Brian Molloy as only he can soon  steadied the ship with two points from free's and this was added to by a point from play from Jacques Chahin to leave the score reading at the break 0.05 to 1.03. Three minutes into the second half Brian Molloy levelled up the game with a good point from play. Martin O'Brien, who was brilliant in the second half soon shot his side into the lead with a point from play. Brian Molloy then added two pointed free's by the 10th minute. Turloughmore were far from done though and rocked Kilnadeema/Leitrim again after 13 mins when Eoin Whelan shot home a goal to level up the game again. Kilnadeema/Leitrim and in particular Brian Molloy's response was super as almost immediately he shot a brilliant goal at the other end. Brian then shot over a free before Liam Kelly shot the final point of the day to leave Kilnadeema/Leitrim winners by five points 1.11 to 2.03. The wonderful year keeps getting better and only one more step to a wonderful double.

Final

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 5.02 St Thomas 2.03

Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 14 team created wonderful history on Sunday June 14th in Kenny Park, Athenry, when they won the Under 14 A championship by defeating neighbours St Thomas, and in doing so became the first club ever to win two A Championship competitions in the one year, adding the normal A Championship to the now separate Feile Na NGeal championship, some achievement. And lets have know doubt about it, this was fully deserved by a truly wonderful team that have brought a breath of fresh air to Galway club hurling. St Thomas, who won the Under 12 A Championship two years ago were deserving of their place in the final and for the first seven minutes were the better team as Shane Cooney was dominating at Centre Half Back. Anna Burke even gave them an early lead with a close in free. This dominance was to be short lived though as in a twinkle of an eye Kilnadeema/Leitrim captain Brian Molloy (not for the first time this season) simply took St Thomas to the cleaners with wonderful play. First on seven minutes after great build up play from Martin O'Brien, Jack Kenny and Justin Moran, Brian simply crashed home his first goal. Two minute later he repeated the act, only this time he danced his way through a forest of players to before hitting an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. St Thomas were now in trouble but responded with a second Eanna Burke pointed free straight away. Two minutes alter we saw the goal of the match when after great play from Dara O'Donoghue and Tony Molloy, Brian took over before setting up Liam Kelly for a brilliant goal. It was now 3.00 to 0.02. The game was slipping away badly from St Thomas by now and it was certainly over after twelve minutes when after great play from Liam Kelly and Brian Molloy again, Jack Kenny completed the task with a simple tap in goal. Brian Molloy soon added a point from play. St Thomas who by now now had moved their star captain Shane Cooney to midfield were awarded a 21 yard free and Cooney duly blasted to the net to reduce the lead after fifteen minutes. This was the last score of the half as the score board read 4.01 to 1.02. This was simply an explosive first half of of amazing forward play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim started off the second half like they finished the first in exciting manner and soon added an other goal and a point. First midfielder Jacques Chahin point after only a minute. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were then awarded a line ball 40 yards out and Liam Kelly struck the ball all the way to the net, it was now a twelve point game. Amazingly the team were not to score again as St Thomas got a grip even though they created many clear cut chances. St Thomas to their credit never gave up and Shane Cooney pointed from play before Eanna Burke shot home a second goal after twelve minutes. This was to prove to be the last score of the game as history was made on a final score line of 5.02 to 2.03. For Des Roche and his management team this was a dream team to work with and to reach the heights they have is simply breathtaking. It is on and upwards now to the All Ireland Feile Na NGeal in Offaly next weekend, and who knows what else 2009 can through up, the Christy Ring trophy maybe?. Just remember this is all not a dream.

Scorers: Brian Molloy 2.01, Liam Kelly 2.00, Jack Kenny 1.00, Jacques Chahin 0.01.

The story of the games at Feile Na NGeal in Laois/Offaly
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.07 Kilcormac/Killoughey 0.09

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 14 team, only five days after their county final success in Galway headed for Kilcormac in County Offaly for their biggest challenge of all, the All Ireland Feile Na NGeal championship on Friday June 19th. after been greeted by their hosts Kilcormac/Killoughey club, it was all down to the local pitch for the first game in the competition against the host club. With a big following making the journey to Offaly from the parish, it was hoped for more of the same as back home. Sadly it just did not materialize, through  a combination of bad luck, bad referring and a better opposition. Kilcormac got the perfect start with a point from Jordon Quinn inside the first minute. Brian Molloy soon leveled with a point from play. Kilcormac responded again after five minutes when Daniel Mahon pointed also from play. Brian Molloy leveled again after 8 mins with a free. Kilcormac even though playing against the breeze were now on top and soon centre half forward Dylan Murray had them two ahead, both from play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim did not lie down and had their best spell of the match from here to half time with Brian Molloy pointing four times to leave his side two up at the break 0.06 to 0.04. Kilcormac well supported by their local people got the better start to the second half with Dylan Murray pointing a free. Brian Molloy replied a minute later, also with a free. This was to be Kilnadeema/Leitrim's last score of the game as Kilcormac/Killoughey took over. Points from James Kilmartin and Dylan again soon had the game level. Kilcormac sensing victory really went for it now and with the help of the Referee just got their. Two points from Dylan Murray and brilliant centre half back Cillian Kiely put them two ahead, a lead they would hold to the finish as time ran out for Kilnadeema/Leitrim who tried everything to get a goal. The final score reading 0.07 to 0.09. It was a heartbreaking start against a side not really rated beforehand. Their was still hope with two more games to come on Saturday in Mountbolus.

Scorers: Brian Molloy 0.07

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 6.06 St Rynagh's 2.03

Kilnadeema/Leitrim headed for Mountbolus on Saturday June 20th for their final group games.
Up first were famous Offaly club St Rynagh's of Bannagher, who had won their first game. Kilnadeema/Leitrim showed no ill effects of the previous evening's defeat as they tore St Rynagh's to shreds' in the opening half, a half that belonged to to the brilliant Brian Molloy as he shot home five goals and four points. His first goal came in the opening minute. He struck again with a brilliant goal soon after. Jacques Chahin then added a point from play before goal number three arrived from Brian and he pointed from play on 11 mins. Martin O'Brien then got in on the act with the best goal of the six after 12 mins. Brian pointed again after thirteen minutes before he added two more goals. Brian again and Liam Kelly completed the first half scoring as the scoreboard read 6.05 to 0.00. With Brian Molloy rested for the second half and with the aid of a breeze St Rynagh's came more into the game. Brian Kelly opened their scoring in the first minute and he repeated it soon after. Martin Daly then got a goal back for Rynagh's. Martin O'Brien shot over Kilnadeema/Leitrim's only score of the second half after 15 mins. Dean Flynn added another goal right on full time for the Offaly team with Ronan Hughes pointing a free to leave the final score reading 6.06 to 2.03. It was now onto the third game 30 minutes later.

Scorers: Brian Molloy 5.04, Martin O'Brien 1.01, Liam Kelly 0.01 Jacques Chahin 0.01.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.08 Courcey Rovers 0.06

The final game was against Cork's B champions Courcey Rovers of West Cork.
This was a game that Liam Kelly showed how good a prospect he is as he shot some wonderful points. Liam opened the scoring in the first minute with a free. Sean og Gately soon scored the equaliser. Liam then scored a brilliant point from play before Martin O'Brien did likewise. Liam Kelly with another point from play after 7 mins had three between the sides. Gately and Daniel Galvin soon pull back the lead for Courcey Rovers before Liam Kelly again pointed right on half time again from play to leave the score  reading 0.05 to 0.03. Brian Molloy who was particularly quiet in this game soon got on the score sheet with a point from play. Sean og Gately then shot over two in a row for the Cork team to leave only a point in it. any hope of a comeback was dashed in the tenth minute when wing forward Tony Molloy scored a wonderful goal running over forty yards to blast home. Ronan Nylan pulled a point back again for Courcey Rovers  before fittingly Brian Molloy had the final say as he pointed two, one from play  to leave the final score reading 1.08 to 0.06. This brought to an end the journey as Kilcormac/Killoughey won both of their game to advance to the semi final and later on to the final.

Disappointing week for Intermediate team as results go against them

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.10 Clarenbridge 2.10

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 5.07 Castlegar 5.13

Having already qualified for the quarter finals of the Intermediate championship,
Kilnadeema/Leitrim played their final two games in the group over a three day period on June 22nd and 26th. First up were Clarenbridge in Athenry on a very warm evening. With Clarenbridge also qualified, it was a very open game all through. County star David Tierney started very brightly and shot over the first two points of the game. After Kevin Conlon opened the 'Bridge's account with a pointed free, Tom Tierney shot over a lovely point from play. Conlon and Tierney then swopted pointed free's before Clarenbridge shot home the opening goal which was created expertly by Gerry Spellman for Kevin Conlon to goal. Conlon was proving a real problem for Kilnadeema/Leitrim and soon scored two more points from free's. David Tierney with a third point from play and a Tom Tierney free closed the gap after 25 mins. Kevin Conlon again and centre half back Peter Burke then shot over pointed free's before David Tierney again with his fourth point from play left the half time score reading 0.07 to 1.06. Kilnadeema/Leitrim got the perfect start to the second half when Fergal Nevin got on the end of a Tom Tierney free to goal in the opening minute. Eamon Hyland then pointed from play. Tom added a pointed free before Bernie Conlon shot home a second goal for Clarenbridge after 12 mins. Padraig Cormican, Kevin Conlon  and John Cannon added further points as Clarenbridge sensed victory. With Kilnadeema/Leitrim in real trouble now with 5 mins left Mike Flanagan stepped up to the mark with a brilliant goal to level up the game again. Tom Tierney then shot over what looked like the winning point from play on 29 mins. Clarenbridge were not to be denied and fittingly Kevin Conlon put over a 65 right on time to draw the match at 2.10 each.

Scorers: Tom Tierney 0.05, David Tierney 0.04, Fergal Nevin 1.00, Mike Flanagan 1.00, Eamon Hyland 0.01.

Team Lineout:

After this game Kilnadeema/Leitrim headed for Craughwell three days later to take on Castlegar
in the final game in the group. It would take a miracle for Castlegar to stay in the championship as their scoring average was very poor. Kilnadeema/Leitrim never reached the heights needed for championship hurling and were in trouble for a lot of this game retiring level at the break 2.03 to 1.06. The goals were scored by new kids on the block Dara Herlihy and Eoin O'Toole. Castlegar completely took over after half time and lead by twelve points with ten minutes to play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim put in  a final spurt and shot three goals in the second period, two from David Tierney and another from Dara Herlihy as the final whistle sounded and a six point defeat the result. While it was hard to get up for this game, it still meant a victory was very important if they wanted to finish top of the group. This they did not achieve.

Team Lineout: Mike Flanagan, Patrick Deely, Ruairi Conneely, Aiden Spaight David Spellman, Kevin Boyle, Ramie Larkin, Sean Burke, David Tierney, Tom Tierney, Fergal Nevin, Liam Geargthy, Eoin O'Toole, Eamon Hyland, Dara Herlihy.

Minor team rocked by Liam Mellows after very poor performance

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.04 Liam Mellows 2.15

Kilnadeema/Leitrim minor team already qualified took on Liam Mellows in Ballyloughane on Friday June 23rd in the Minor B championship.
Even though short a few players Kilnadeema/Leitrim never reached any greats heights and were completely out played by the home side. Mellows took an early three point lead  from Michael Clune, and two from John O'Halloran before Dara Herlihy opened his sides account with a point from a free after 13 mins. Liam Mellows who have a very big strong physical team took over from here to half time and added points at will under little resistance. Danny Breen and two more John O'Halloran points had five in it after 21 mins. Sean Morrissey then shot over a great point before Dara scored a second free. Mellows finished the strongest with further points from Alan Clancy and John O'Halloran to leave it 0.09 to 0.02 at the break. We expected a strong Kilnadeema/Leitrim revival in the second half, but it never arrived. Danny and Dean Breen and John O'Halloran  soon added more points for Liam Mellows before Dara Herlihy shot over another pointed free. Alan Clancy then broke through for a Mellows goal after 10 mins to put this game to bed. John O'Halloran then scored a lineball as everything was going right for the City side, and to prove this point Dean Breen did likewise soon after. Dean then added a second goal after 20 mins. Mark Kelly finally got Kilnadeema/Leitrim's first score from play after 22 mins, a point. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were now trying a little harder and got some reward after 26 mins when substitute Stephen Farrell goaled. Liam Mellows had the final say when they scored a point right at the end to leave the final score reading 1.04 to 2.15.This was a totally unexpected performance from  this team who must now return to the drawing board and start again.

Gort no match for confident  Under 12 team

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.08 Gort 0.00

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 12 team played their their second game in the group when they entertained Gort in Leitrim on Monday June 22nd. Gort who had a strong physical team made the better start and missed two goals in the opening minutes. Kilnadeema/Leitrim eventually got to grips with them mainly through their half back line and Midfield getting on top. Then after a few missed chances Kilnadeema/Leitrim opened the scoring when full forward Kevin Roche shot over a good point from play. Kevin was to continue to torment the Gort defence during the rest of the first half and he doubled their lead 4 mins later after Colm Callagy had a good shot saved by the goalkeeper. With both midfielders Niall Broderick and Dylan Towolowi now on top, it was no surprise when Dylan shot over a brilliant point two minutes later. Kevin Roche added two more points. one from play, before Jack Kenny added another point also from play. Kevin Roche fittingly added the last score of the half, a point from play when a goal seemed on to leave the half time score reading 0.07 to 0.00. Any hope Gort had of a comeback were dashed a minute into the second half when a low shot from Arron Murray creped in at the post for a goal. Kevin Roche soon added another point from play. Hard to believe this was the last score of the game as Substitutes were soon introduced leaving the final score reading 1.08 to no score. This was a very confident performance and it looks good for the rest of the championship.

Scorers: Kevin Roche 0.06, Arron Murray 1.00, Dylan Towolowi 0.01, Jack Kenny 0.01.

Under 12 team off to winning start against Oranmore/Maree

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.05 Oranmore/Maree 1.04

Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 12 team got their championship campaign up and running for the 2009 season
when they took on Oranmore/Maree in Oranmore on Wed June 16th. The game was played on a bright windy evening on a pitch where the grass was much too long. Kilnadeema/Leitrim fielding two of the first fifteen on the victorious Under 14 team, namely Ciaran Connor and Jack Kenny. They played against the breeze in the first half and still lead by 2.02 to 1.01 at the break. An early goal and a point by Jack Kenny gave them a great start. Oranmore/Maree replied with a point from Ross Malone. Kilnadeema/Leitrim continued to dominate and Arran Murray soon shot over a brilliant point. A short time later Gavin Kenny at corner forward scored a second goal for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Oranmore/Maree stayed in touch with a goal of their own from Steven Cummins. to leave four points between the sides at the break. Kilnadeema/Leitrim with the breeze in the second half were always in control with Kevin Roche extending their lead with an early pointed free after one minute. Mark Lawless then put over a lovely point after 4 mins. Matt Malone replied with a pointed free. The game was as good as over after 8 mins when after good work by Niall Broderick, Mikie Lynch goaled. Jack Kenny then added a point from play. The final two scored of the half were both scored by Matt Malone ( son of former Galway star Pat Malone), to leave the final score reading 3.05 to 1.04. The noticeable feature about this game was the strong physical approach of Oranmore/Maree which left a few players with bad injuries. This game will get the team ready for tougher games ahead.

Junior B team back on track after easy win over Killimordaly

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.12 Killimordaly 1.05

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Junior B team got back on track in group B of the championship with a comprehensive victory over Killimordaly in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, on Sunday June 14th.

Oranmore/Maree deserving winners as Junior B team disappoint in opening championship game

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.10 Oranmore/Maree 1.14

Kilnadeema/Leitrim after two false starts finally opened their championship campaign in Junior B when they took on Oranmore/Maree in Ardrahan on Saturday June 6th. Having had a very successful league so far in 2009, hopes were high for this team but sadly this was not so as they never reached those heights despite having a lot of the play. After playing with the breeze in the opening half Kilnadeema/Leitrim had a slender one point lead at the break 1.06 to 1.05, the goal coming from full forward Kevin Molloy from play. With only four points to show for their efforts in the second half, Oranmore/Maree were always in the driving seat, winning on a final score line of 1.14 to 1.10. Their are still plenty opportunities to qualify from this group.

Scorers: Kevin Molloy 1.04, Michael Regan 0.02, Gary Curley 0.02, Tony Kelly 0.01, Ruairi Costello 0.01.

Big Disappointment as Under 21 team lose Quarter final to Padraig Pearses by a single point

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.08 Padraig Pearses 1.12

Report from John Rafferty
Kilnadeema/Leitrim had victory snatched from their fingertips in the dying moments of the U21B Championship quarter final, played in Duggan Park Ballinasloe, on Saturday last, May 9th. The post-mortems into this defeat will surely be long and hard because for long stretches of this match they were in complete control, as the younger lighter  Pearses side, had no answer to the power pace and hunger of the fired-up Kilnadeema/Leitrim  men. They were out of the traps in flash and by the mid-point of the first half had opened up a 4 points to 2 lead with Padraic Stapleton and Brian Gardener lording it at full and centre back respectively. The latter in fact opened the scoring with a placed ball into a stiff breeze from half way. At the other end of the field, Dara Herlihy and Eoin O'Toole had the Pearses rearguard in real trouble, the former scoring two from placed balls with the latter shooting a fine effort from play. The winners only response coming from an Emmett Ward free and a neat Niall Geilston point from play. It was all Kilnadeema/Leitrim  now and in the space of a minute, the twin assassins, Herlihy and O'Toole, combined for what looked like two match winning goals. The St Brigid's student made the decisive break and passed to the full forward who finished with aplomb on both occasions, to give his side an 8pt advantage, midway through the first half. Stung by this reversal, Pearses came to life outscoring their opponents by 4pts to 2 from there to the break. Ward with two frees, Dermot Skehill and Keith Donnellan, one each from play getting the scores, with  Brian Gardener landing his second of the day from half-way and Gary Winters from play responding for Kilnadeema/Leitrim , to leave them 6pts to the good with wind advantage to come in the second period. Kilnadeema/Leitrim  were slow coming out after the break and Paul Howard was picking the ball out of the net after 30 seconds. Conor O'Grady first timed to the net when a long range Ward free dropped short. Normal service appeared to be resumed, 4 minutes later when Brian Gardener shot his third, this time from a 65. Pearses had other ideas however, their backs got to grips with the  rampant Kilnadeema/Leitrim  forwards while up front the attackers were creating more space and hurling much better playing into the elements Niall Geilston and Emmett Ward reduced the margin to two with two great strikes from play, before the Kilnadeema/Leitrim  free taker Dara Herlihy had what turned out to be their last score after only eleven second half minutes. Pearses now had the wind in their sails, Niall Skehill was hurling up a storm, landing two super scores from distance, while Emmett Ward broke free from the shackles of the tight marking Stapleton to land an outrageous strike from the left touch line. Connor O'Grady shot Pearses into the lead for the first time in the match, with three minutes of  normal time on the clock. Kilnadeema/Leitrim  had a number of chances to level matters but a combination of poor shooting and dogged but disciplined Pearses defence denied them. The final whistle sounded with the score board reading 2.08  to 1.12. This was a very disappointing defeat, especially as the team had to line out with Gearoid Whelan and Ruairi Costello due to injury. With most of the team underage again next year, this was a good learning experience.

Scorers: Eoin O'Toole 2.01, Dara Herlihy 0.03, Brian Gardiner 0.03, Gary Winters 0.01.

Team Lineout:   Paul Howard; Shane Curley, Padraig Stapleton, Kevin Kelly; Michael Donoghue, Brian Gardener, Cathal Nevin; Mark Kelly, Alvin Mitchell; Gerry Curley, Martin Costello, Aiden  Monaghan; Dara Herlihy, Eoin O'Toole, Gary Winners;

High energy performance sees Kilnadeema/Leitrim record second win in a week over Ballindereen.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.17 Ballindereen 0.11

Championship hurling as you would expect between two of the fancy teams for the Intermediate championship was on show in Loughrea on Sunday May 3rd, as Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ballindereen squared up in an absorbing, physical game with Kilnadeema/Leitrim enjoying an unexpected nine point victory. A victory which ensured qualification for the knockout stages after only two games. Their were big expectations of Ballindereen, who only lost their senior status last year, but on the evidence of this performance, they have a lot of work to do to have any hope of returning to senior level in the near future. Tom Tierney, who had a wonderful game at wing forward opened the scoring with a pointed free in the first minute. Keith Carr replied soon after for Ballindereen with a point from play. Alan Martyn  put them ahead with a good point from play shortly after. This was to be the only time they lead in the game as Kilnadeema/Leitrim took over. Tom Tierney with a point from play levelled matters again before Eamon Hyland shot a brilliant point after been set up by the hard working Shane Flaherty. Brian Daniels and David Tierney soon shot points from play as they opened up a gap of three. Barry Coen then shot over a very disputable point for Ballindereen with the Umpires not agreeing on weather it was a score or not. Tom Tierney, who caused a lot of problems to the Ballindereen defence all day soon shot over a mighty point from near the sideline after 14 minutes. Keith Carr kept Ballindereen in the game with another point from play after 17 mins. Enda Fanning, who has been the find of the year for Kilnadeema/Leitrim shot over a lovely point a minute later. David Tierney and Barry Coen, both with their second points of the day left three between the sides after 22 mins. Tom Tierney shot over his fourth point on 25 minutes, again from play. Keith Connolly then added a point for the south Galway side before Niall Tierney hit a great point off the ground. Alan Martyn had the last say of the first half right on the break the leave the score board reading 0.10 to 0.07. Tom Tierney started off where he left off with another pointed free a minute into the second half. Then on seven minutes both teams were reduced to fourteen men when Enda Fanning and Colm Meehan saw red for a striking offence. Tom Tierney added another point from a free after 9 mins as scores became harder to find. Pakie Carr came up from wing back to open Ballindeeren's account in the second half with a point after 10 minutes. Tom Tierney quickly replied for Kilnadeema/Leitrim with another point from play. Then we had to wait eight minutes before Shane Coen shot over a Ballindereen point. Fergal Nevin was now introduced for Kilnadeema/Leitrim and made an instant impact as he got on the end of a loose ball in the square to crash home a vital goal and end Ballindeeren's challenge after 24 mins. Shane Coen shot over another point from a free two minutes later. Kilnadeema/Leitrim finished the stronger and shot four points to one in reply before the finish, first through Tom Tierney from play, which was quickly added to by Eamon Hyland, Sean Burke and Eamon again to a lone reply from Shane Coen for Ballindereen. Peter Murphy blew the final whistle shortly after on a final score of 1.17 to 0.11. This was a very pleasing performance and a improvement again from the previous week against Killimor. Next up Castlegar in two weeks.

Scorers: Tom Tierney 0.08, Fergal Nevin 1.00, Eamon Hyland 0.03, David Tierney 0.02, Enda Fanning 0.01, Brian Daniels 0.01, Sean Burke 0.01, Niall Tierney 0.01.

Impressive performance by minor team against Ballindereen

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.15 Ballindereen 2.08

Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ballindereen meet in very wet conditions in the second minor championship in Ballindereen on Wednesday April 29th.
In a very competitive game Kilnadeema/Leitrim put in a very impressive first half performance to lead by eleven points at the break. Shane Lawless opened the scoring after a minute with a lovely point from play. Mark Kelly, in a new role of corner forward soon shot home a brilliant goal. Damien Donoghue added a point from play a minute later as all the full forward line had scored by the fourth minute. Kevin Lane opened Ballindeeren's account with a free on 5 mins, before Kilnadeema/Leitrim scored another goal, this time from Shane Lawless after brilliant work from Niall Haverty and Dara Herlihy. Kevin Lane added another free a minute later as scores continued to pile up. Dara Herlihy with two points, one from play and a 65 left his side eight points ahead after 10 mins. After Paul Howard had made a great save, Dara added another free. Ballindereen added a point from play before Damien Donoghue got his second point from play. Niall Haverty and Dara Herlihy then added points from play after 21 mins before captain Alvin Mitchell got in on the act with a lovely point from play. Kevin Lane added two more points from free's for Ballindereen before substitute Cathal king got a brilliant point on his introduction to leave the half time score 2.10 to 0.05.Ballindeeren opened the scoring in the second half before Martin Costello shot over a inspirational point after 10 mins. The defence were under much more pressure now, but were playing very well. Kevin Lane added a point from play before Mark Kelly shot a brilliant goal to really kill off the game. Cathal King soon added a point from play before Damien Donoghue shot a fourth goal after 17 mins. Dara Herlihy shot over a lovely point soon after  before Mark Lane shot a goal for Ballindereen. He added another point soon after. Cathal King with his third point and Martin Costello with  his second point near the end. Kevin Lane, who was very good for Ballindereen shot another goal right on full time to leave the final score reading 4.14 to 2.08. This was certainly more like it by this team and sets them up nicely for the break.

Intermediate team off to a winning start against Killimor

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.12 Killimor 0.13

The first real signs of Summer usually arrives with the start of the Intermediate championship in Galway,
but you certainly wouldn't think so in April, 2009, as a very wet weekend greeted Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Killimor when they contested the opening round in Ballinasloe on Sunday April 26th. This game which was fixed for the previous day only to been called off due to heavy rain, was played in driving rain and wind. Michael Dervan opened the scoring  with a point from a free in the opening minute for Killimor. Tom Tierney replied with three points in a row, all from placed balls by the 11th minute. Shane Duane with a point from play for Killimor reduced to lead to one by the 16th minute. Michael Dervan leveled up the game for the only time a minute later, this time from play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim responded with two points, the first from play from Shane Flaherty and then a 60 mtr free from Tom Tierney after 20mins. Robert Mitchell and Tom Tierney swopted points within the next five minutes, both from play. Kevin Callanan kept Killimor right in the game with another point from play before Tom Tierney pointed a free. With only two points between the sides coming close to half time, a goal could prove decisive to either side and Kilnadeema/Leitrim's Michael Flanagan got just that after 30 mins  after an Eamon Hyland shot was blocked down. The half time whistle soon sounded with the score reading  1.07 to 0.05.If that goal just before half time was vital, the first score of the second half was real disaster for Killimor as Tom Tierney ran right through the defence to score another goal only a minute into the second half. If everybody thought that was it then Killimor did not read the script and failed to score again until the 18th minute as Killimor took over. Michael Dervan with three pointed free's with points from play from Tommy Gibbons and Shane Duane left only a goal between the sides. Tom Tierney settled down matters again with two pointed free's by the 21st minute to put five between the sides again. Eamon Hyland then shot a brilliant point from play, before Michael Dervan shot over another point from a free. Tom Tierney replied with a similar score before Shane McClernan shot over the first of two late points for him for Killimor to narrow the gap. Eamon Hyland had time to get a second point from play before the end as the final whistle sounded on a final score of 2.12 to 0.13. This was an average performance from Kilnadeema/Leitrim on the opening day with much better to come in the next few weeks. For the new management of Paul Kennedy and Shane Kelly, it's a great start.

Scorers: Tom Tierney 1.09, Michael Flanagan 1.00, Eamon Hyland 0.02, Shane Flaherty 0.01.

Team lineout: Mark Herlihy, Patrick Deely, Ruairi Conneely, Gearoid Whelan, David Spellman, Kevin Boyle, Aiden Spaight, Sean Burke, David Tierney, Tom Tierney, Enda Fanning, Niall Tierney, Shane Flaherty, Eamon Hyland, Michael Flanagan.

Minors off to a winning start against Rahoon/Newcastle

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.14 Rahoon/Newcastle 1.06

The Minor team of Kilnadeema/Leitrim got their championship season under way with a first round group game against Rahoon/Newcastle on Saturday April 18th in Ballindereen. Both teams were slow to get into the championship grove with the city side starting the stronger. Alvin Mitchell eventually opened the scoring after 6 mins with a point from play. Rahoon replied with three unanswered points by the 12th minute, all from free's scored by James Tuffy. Shane Lawless finally got Kilnadeema/Leitrim moving a minute later with a point from play. Dara Herlihy with two points, one from play has his side back in front by the 16th minute. Full Forward Damien Donoghue then added a point from out near the sideline. The big break in this game came after 25 mins when Shane Lawless scrambled the ball over the line for a goal. Dara Herlihy added a point from a free which was replied to by James Tuffy to leave the half time score reading 1.06 to 0.04. Rahoon/Newcastle would have the breeze in the second half, but it was Kilnadeema/Leitrim which started the better with Shane lawless pointing inside  a minute with Dara Herlihy pointing a minute later. Gary Curley, in his new roll as a wing back came forward and struck a great point on the run. Rahoon kept in touch with a fortunate goal soon after. Dara and James then swopted points, both from play before Dara put over another free after 10 mins. Seven minutes passed before Shane Lawless shot over a brilliant point. Dara Herlihy with a free and another Gary Curley point from play finished the scoring on a final score of 1.14 to 1.05. This was a typical opening day performance by Kilnadeema/Leitrim with a lot more expected the next day out.

Wonderful victory for Under 21 team as they reach quarter finals

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.12 Killimor 0.08

Kilnadeema/Leitrim after their disappointing opening day defeat to Cappataggle got their Under 21 championship
back on track with a preliminary quarter final victory over Killimor in Castledaly on Sunday April 5th. Killimor came with a big reputation, but never really got into the game as Kilnadeema/Leitrim fought brilliantly for every ball. Team captain Brian Gardiner lead by example when opening the scoring with a pointed free from over 100 yards after one minute, Dara Herlihy then added three pointed free's by the twelfth minute for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Killimor eventually opened their account with a point from play from Justin Broderick after 13 minutes, this after they had missed many chances. Kilnadeema/Leitrim quickly replied with a first score from play, a point from full forward Eoin O'Toole. Dara Herlihy with two points from free's and a Jason Harahan reply, also from a free sandwiched in between to leave the score reading 0.07 to 0.02. Patrick Gourhy then added another point from play for Killimor, before the first real break came in the game after 22 minutes, when Eoin O'Toole scored a fine goal for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Dara and Jason then swopted points, again from free's before Eoin O'Toole pointed again from play. Jason Harahan finished off the scoring in the first half with two more points from free's for Killimor to leave the score line reading 1.09 to 0.06. Killimor had the breeze in the second half and were expected to put up a  better display in the second half. Christopher Starr gave them the perfect start with a point from play. Dara Herlihy opened the sides account for the second half with a pointed free before Thomas Dunne shot over another point for Killimor. Any hopes Killimor had of a comeback were ended totally after 18 minutes when Dara Herlihy got on the end of a loose ball in around the goals to crash home a second goal for Kilnadeema/Leitrim and put more day light between the sides. Colm Kelly, who had just been introduced to the game then scored a brilliant point from play. The final point of the game came from Gary Curley from play right on full time as the final whistle soon sounded with a final score of 2.12 to 0.08. This was a brilliant win for this team and a place in the last of the championship to look forward to.

Home defeat in the Intermediate league as team turns worst performance in many a year

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.04 Oranmore/Maree 0.09

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Intermediate team turned one of their poorest performances in many a year
when they were rolled over much too easily by Oranmore/Maree in the league, which was played in Leitrim on Sunday March 29th. The reality is the team only scored one point from play in sixty minutes of play, which is just not good enough at this level, and puts the team under severe pressure for the championship in little over a months time. In a very poor first half, Oranmore/Maree despite playing into the breeze and rain were to lead at half time by a single point. Colm Cormican opened the scoring for the Westerners with a point from play after only one minute. Martin Keane, Oranmore/Maree centre half forward, who was to prove a real handful all through soon doubled his teams lead with another point from play. The only score from play for the home side arrived on ten minutes when Jason Collins shot over a good point. Hard to believe the team couldn't muster one more point from play over the next 50 minutes. Tom Tierney soon levelled up the game with a point from a free, before Martin Keane landed his second point for Oranmore/Maree four minutes later. Oranmore/Maree goalkeeper Kieran Hanniffy made the first of two brilliant saves soon after from Tom Tierney, before Tom levelled the game again with a point from a 65. Martin Keane who was the star of the match shot over the final score of the first half , another point from play to leave the score line reading 0.04 to 0.03. With Oranmore/Maree having the elements in the second half, they soon pushed on in their quest for victory. Sean Cormican, who opened the scoring in the first half added another early in the second. Kieran Hanniffy brought off his second breathtaking save soon after, again from Tom Tierney. Tom kept the scores close with another pointed free soon after.

Under 21 team come up short against star studded Cappataggle side in opening round of the championship

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.06 Cappataggle 2.06

The first championship game of the 2009 season kicked off in the Under 21 competition
when the opening round game took place on Saturday march 7th in Tynagh against near neighbours and all Ireland Intermediate finalists Cappataggle, a team that featured many of those players that graced Croke Park recently, even if they were missing county goalkeeper James Skehill through injury. The early stages of this game was very competitive and fiercely contested. Kilnadeema/Leitrim, who lined out with seven minors on their team got off to a good start with a point from Alvin Mitchell from play, this after Alan Dolan had opened the scoring for Cappataggle from a free. Dara Herlihy then put his  team ahead with his first pointed free soon after ( this was the only time the team lead in the game). The first big break of the game fell to Cappataggle when Alan Dolan got on the end of a long delivery to blast past Paul Howard in the goals. Cappataggle were now on top and added two more points from Alan Dolan and Mark Loughnane to put their team ahead 1.03 to 0.02. The second real blow arrived close to half time when full forward Ronan Garvey pulled on a lose ball to score a second goal for Cappataggle. Dara Herlihy added another point from a free just on half time to leave the score at the break reading 2.03 to 0.03. The second half never reached the heights of the first as the poor weather and under foot conditions began to take it's toll on the players. Their was only three points added by either side in the second half. Gary Curley added only the second score of the game from play for Kilnadeema/Leitrim and two more Dara Herlihy free's was the sum total for their side. Alan Dolan with two points and a David Byrne point were the replies from Cappataggle to leave the final score 2.06 to 0.06 in Cappataggle's favour. While this was a disappointing result for this very young side, it was to be expected against a very strong Cappataggle side who will be one of the favourites for the competition later on in the year. For Kilnadeema/Leitrim their will be a second chance later on in the losers competition.

Scorers: Dara Herlihy 0.04, Alvin Mitchell 0.01, Gary Curley 0.01.

Winning start to 2009 League for both Intermediate and Junior teams

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.15 Ahascragh/Fohenagh 2.10

Kilnadeema/Leitrim  under the new management of Paul Kennedy and Shane Kelly made a winning start to the 2009 Intermediate league with a well merited victory over north Galway side Ahascragh/Fohenagh at a dry, but windy Leitrim on Sunday March 1st. Having to field without many of the regular players who were unavailable for this weekend, Kilnadeema/Leitrim were forced to ask five of the Junior team who played the previous day to field again in this game. Ahascragh/Fohenagh playing against the wind in the first half made the better start and lead by two points after four minutes with points from JP Egan and Finbar Donnellan. Sean Burke soon opened Kilnadeema/Leitrim's account with a point from play. Kevin Molloy, one of the five Junior players rolled back the years with another great performance and he got his first point on 11 minutes to level up the game. The vital break in this first half arrived soon after when Eamon Coleman got on the end of a long delivery to shot to the net and leave his side ahead 1.02 to 0.02. Ahascragh/Fohenagh were rocked but soon recovered and were back level two minutes alter when a long free from Kevin Gavin was put in the net by David Costello. Kevin Molloy with two free's and a brilliant point from Eamon Coleman had Kilnadeema/Leitrim in control after 20 minutes leading by three. Sean burke and Eamon Hyland then added two  more great points, also from play, before Kevin Molloy added two more points from free's. Eamon Hyland, who was playing very well at centre Half Forward then tacked on another good point before Kevin Molloy and Alan Smyth swopted points from free's. to leave the half time score reading 1.11 to 1.03 in Kilnadeema/Leitrim's favour. With the wind at their back Ahascragh/Fohenagh were quick out of the blocks in the second half and goaled almost straight away from Alan Smyth from a close in free. Sean Lally with two points from free's and Kevin Molloy with one reply left just four points between the teams after 10 minutes, 1.12 to 2.05. We then had two good points by opposite midfielders, Patrick Hartigan and Fergal Nevin. Sean Lally and Kevin Gavin with two pointed free's after 16 minutes left two points between the sides with Ahascragh/Fohenagh looking like winners. The final fourteen minutes were evenly fought with Kevin Molloy adding two more pointed free's and Kevin Gavin replying for his team with one from play and one from a free to leave the final score line reading Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.15 Ahascragh/Fohenagh 2.10. This was a good opening game to the season and hopefully will give the players the vital encouragement to go on and win many more games this year.

Scorers: Kevin Molloy 0.09, Eamon Coleman 1.01, Sean Burke 0.02, Eamon Hyland 0.02, Fergal Nevin 0.01.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Junior B team got off to the perfect start on Saturday February 28th when they defeated Michael Breaneach's by two points in Leitrim in the Junior B league.  Wonderful success for brilliant Under 16 team in county final

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.15 Liam Mellows 1.11

Now and again a team comes along in a club that will tick all the right boxes and hit all the right cords and in 2008 Kilnadeema/Leitrim discovered such a team of Under 16 players who wanted to win a county title so badly after over ninety training sessions and 20 competitive matches, both championship and challenge, they came up trumps in a wonderful Under 16 B final against Liam Mellows in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe on Saturday November 29th.With both teams having remained undefeated all year in the championship, this was always going to be a close contest and so it turned out to be for long stages until Kilnadeema/Leitrim pulled away at the finish. Liam Mellows opened the scoring with a point from play from Luke Williams after one minute. With the game been played on a ice cold frosty pitch the play was hectic right from the start. Dara Herlihy settled his team down soon after with a pointed free. John O'Halloran soon replied for Liam Mellows with a point, also from a free. Dara Herlihy operating at corner forward leveled up the game again with a point from play after five minutes. Dara, the team captain was really leading by example now and soon shot his team into the lead for the first time with another brilliant point from play to lead 0.03 to 0.02 after six minutes. The Kilnadeema/Leitrim defence was coming under a lot of pressure early on and it was Conor Fahy in particular who helped pulled the team together time and again. Liam Mellows full forward Declan Forde was catching all the high balls been delivered into to his area and soon won a penalty for his team which he took himself and disappointingly for him and Liam Mellows he struck the ball too high to register only a point as a goal would have been a Hugh lift for his side so early in the game. Alvin Mitchell, who was to have a wonderful and influential game soon landed a mighty point from play after he made on of his trade mark runs up the field immediately after the penalty to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim back in front. Liam Mellows were to suffer a big blow soon after when they lost midfielder John O'Halloran through injury. Danny Bruen with a pointed free leveled up the game again after 15 minutes. One of the scores of the game followed soon after when Stephen Bruton won a great ball and gave the perfect pass to Conor O'Brien who pointed from near the corner flag. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were dominating in many area's now with both Alvin Mitchell and Martin Costello putting in big performances at midfield and it was Martin who shot the next point on 17 minutes to put his side two points up. The game took a dramatic turn on 24 minutes though when Declan Walsh scrambled home a very fortunate goal to put Liam Mellows back in front 1.04 to 0.06. This put Kilnadeema/Leitrim under some pressure again and the response was magic, when after missing a few good goal scoring chances, Shane  Lawless struck for a brilliant goal  which went high into the roof of the net to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim back in front by two points. Dara Herlihy closed the scoring for the first half with another point from play a minute later to leave the scoreboard reading 1.07 to 1.04 at the break and with all to play for. With a slight breeze to come and playing into the scoring goals in the second half, Kilnadeema/Leitrim were now in with a great chance or so we thought until the early stages of the second half came which didn't go according to the script. Midfielder Dean Bruen quickly got Liam Mellows rolling with a point from play, before Danny Bruen closed the gap even further after 3 minutes with another point from play. Dara Herlihy, who struck the post with an earlier free soon put over a brilliant point from a free near the sideline. Danny Bruen did likewise with a pointed free for Liam Mellows after 6 mins to leave just one point between the sides, and Bruen was now really beginning to make his mark on the game with two more points, one from play after 9 minutes to put Liam Mellows back in front 1.09 to 1.08. Kilnadeema/Leitrim has lost their shape all over the field and looked in real trouble, but we should have known better, because if their is one thing about this team, they never give up easily and almost immediately they found a new gear with much more composure. Shane Lawless, who had his best game since last years under 14 final struck over a brilliant equalizing point. Five minutes of play followed before Dara Herlihy shot over a 65 to restore the lead for the east Galway side 1.10 to 1.09. Dara and Danny Bruen then exchanged pointed free's after 18 minutes. Alvin Mitchell was dominating the game at this stage and broke through for another brilliant long range point after 19 minutes. Dara Herlihy with his eight point soon had a goal between the sides. Any chance Liam Mellows had of adding this years title to the one they won in 2007 was given a real blow on 23 minutes when Dara Herlihy, who had just been moved to full forward turned his man before sliding home the perfect goal past a disappointed Ricky Elwood. It was now a six point game with the winning line in sight. Alvin Mitchell crowned a mighty performance with another point three minutes later to open up a seven point gap. Liam Mellows best player, centre half back Sean Morrissey was moved forward at this stage and he shot over a point a minute later. The final score of a great game fell to Shane Lawless when he shot another brilliant point right on the call of time to leave the final score reading a wonderful Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.15 Liam Mellows 1.11when referee Christy Helebert blew for the end. What followed were scenes of unbridled joy as hundreds of Kilnadeema/Leitrim fans made their way onto the pitch to greet their heroes. This was a performance and result of such high quality which will do wonders for Kilnadeema/Leitrim hurling club, especially with the talent now coming on stream. Their were many stars on the day. Conor Cunningham had a easy day with very little to do and could do very little about the goal conceded, the fullback line was steady all through, especially when Niall McGinley switched into fullback with Conal Whelan much happier in the corner where he dominated all through. Colin Moran was equally solid in the other corner. The half back line after a rocky start were brilliant all through with James Conway, Conor Fahy and Stephen Farrell putting great performances. Midfield was the real bedrock of the team with Alvin Mitchell and Martin Costello putting mighty displays. The half forward line played really well and in Shane Lawless had a real match winner. Niall Haverty and Conor O'Brien did many good things all through with Conor's point a real highlight. Dara Herlihy with one goal and eight points was super all through in both the full and half forward lines. John Callagy and Stephen Bruton both set up many chances for their team mates during the game. Also well done to all the substitute's who contributed throughout the year. For Manager Joe Keane and selectors Denis Callagy and Michael Flynn, this was a really great team to have worked with and due reward all round at the end for eight long months of hard work. The team and management wish to thank their main sponsor Gerry Walsh of House n' Homes and also Joe Kenny plastering and Peter Leahy Builder for their generous sponsorship of togs and socks. Roll on next year.
