All Ireland
Intermediate hurling championship semi final in Semple Stadium,
Thurles on Saturday August 11th
Galway 2.06 Waterford
3.17
Waterford
completely outclassed Galway in the All Ireland Intermediate semi
final at Thurles, to set up a final clash with Wexford. The game was
over as a contest by half time as Waterford raced into a 2.09 to
1,00 interval lead. Galway's only score coming through Michael
Greaney on 14 minutes, when he shot to the net, by which stage
Waterford lead by 5 points to no score. Galway were disappointing,
but it must be said that they are not playing at a level playing
field at this level. Waterford have the luxury of picking players
from senior clubs in what is essentially a senior "B" outfit. This
luxury isn't afforded to Galway whose side is primarily chosen from
Intermediate and Junior clubs. Such was Waterford's strength that
they were able to call on 10 players who had played in the national
Hurling League for the county. Despite these anomalies Galway should
have performed better with Waterford full value for their twelve
point half time lead. The Tribesmen competed better in the second
half with Benny lawless adding a spark to a forward unit that had
failed to ignite before the break. Eamon Hyland excellently pointed
a early line ball, while Lawless shot three second half points.
Michael Greaney shot his second goal on ten minutes while Tom
Tierney also shot a point. if Galway are to continually challenge
for honours at this level then the powers that be must ensure that
all counties have a level playing field. Final score line read 3.17
to 2.06, a 14 point defeat.
