Footballers suffer first defeat against neighbours

Galway 0-13 Mayo 1-11

Mayo battled hard to overcome arch rivals Galway by a single point at Tuam Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The home side had the better of the first half and went into the break with a commanding six-point lead with Michael Meehan hitting four points in the opening period. Paul Conroy also contributed with three points, while Joe Bergin and Barry Cullinane hit a point apiece. But Mayo stormed back into the contest outscoring Galway by 1-08 to 0-04 in the second half thanks to a dominating performance from the Green and Red midfield.

In the end it was Aidan O'Shea's 40th-minute goal for that settled it in Mayo's favour, while Peader Gardiner also contributed with two points from play at a critical stage. And it was man of the match Trevor Mortimer who scored the winning point with two minutes remaining as Mayo move into fourth place in the league, while Galway missed the chance to join Kerry at the top of the table and remain in second place. The game wasn't without controversy however, as Mayo midfielder Ronan McGarrity appeared to be shown a second black card in the 44th minute but remained on the pitch.
