Kilnadeema/Leitrim
and Abbeyknockmoy had the honour of opening group C of the
Intermediate hurling championship for 2007 when they clashed in
Kenny Park, Athenry on a wet Saturday evening 12th May. Both teams
meet in the championship at the group stage last year with
Kilnadeema/Leitrim proving much too strong for the former senior
champions of 19 years previous. The sides also meet in this year's
league a few weeks ago in Leitrim with the game much closer this
time and Kilnadeema/Leitrim only scrapped home by three points. with
Mattie Murphy now in charge of coaching the side and after the
disappointment of losing to Killimordaly in the 2006 semi-final, he
really had the team fined tuned for the start of the 2007
championship and this was very evident from the off with
Kilnadeema/Leitrim on top all over the pitch. Full Forward and
captain Eamon Hyland opened the scoring after three minutes with a
lovely point. Two minutes later he lead by example again as he caught a
good lineball, turned and struck a second point. Three minutes later
we had the first pointed free of the game when Tom Tierney scored
after a foul on corner forward Alan Flaherty. With the defence
totally on top and three points on the board Kilnadeema/Leitrim had
made the perfect start and the lead was increased on 10 minutes with
an Eamon Hyland goal after a good move out of defence started by
corner back Liam Geargthy and continued on by midfielder Frankie
Burke. Eamon with 1-02 had certainly started brilliantly for the
side. A Minute later Tom Tierney added another free from all of
80 yards out to open up a 1-04 to no score lead. Even after only
eleven minutes Abbeyknockmoy who are coached by former Galway great
Tony Keady looked shell-shocked. Tom Tierney added to their troubles
only a minute later with another pointed free, his third of the
game. Abbey' suffered another blow after 16 minutes when they had to
replace their county star John Culkin who was really not fit enough
to have started the game in the first place. Tom Tierney was scoring
from all distances now and he added a 65 on 17 minutes to put his
side 9 points ahead at this stage, and he added another from a free
on 19 minutes to really put pressure on the North Galway side. A
Minute later we had the first point from play for 13 minutes when
Niall Tierney scored a lovely point after a good catch and turn.
Abbeyknockmoy's turn to score finally came on 21 minutes when Dermot
Molloy scored from play. We wondered would they finally wake up but
Tom Tierney soon ended that notion with his first point from play
after been set up by a good pass from Sean Burke and brother Niall
to leave the score 1-09 to 0-01 after 22 minutes. A glimmer of hope
finally arrived for Abbeyknockmoy on 23 and 25 minutes when Dermot
Molloy scored two free's to reduce the gap to nine points. The final
two scored of the half were swopted by Tom Tierney and Donnie
Collins, Tierney's another free after afoul on Michael
Flanagan. The half time whistle soon sounded much to Abbeyknockmoy's
relief as they retired to the dressing room 9 points adrift. |

Intermediate team reach knockout stages after hard earned victory over Kilbeacanty |

championship Group C round two played in Killimor on Saturday June

|
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
Intermediate team qualified for the knockout stages of the
championship after a hard earned, but well merited win over a much
improved Kilbeacanty side when they clashed in Killimor on Saturday
June 2nd. The game which was played on a very wet evening was
a physical battle all through with both clubs anxious to win having
won their opening games. The game was only 2 minutes old when Tom
Tierney shot a point from a free after missing one a minute earlier.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim had made the better start and things got even
better on 6 minutes when Michael Flanagan crashed home a goal after
a Sean Burke shot had come back off the crossbar and fell into
Flanagan's path and the goal resulted. Kilbeacanty were now
beginning to put some good passages of play together and they opened
their account on 9 mins when County minor star Stephen Lambert
scored from a free. Centre Half Back Noel Carey had started
very well for the South Galway side and he soon had their second
point from a free over 100 yards out. Three minutes later Sean
Burke, who was covering a lot of ground in the early stages
raced through the Kilbeacanty cover to shoot a good point to leave
his side ahead 1.02 to 0.02 almost at the midpoint of the first
half. We had to wait all of five minutes for another score when
Kilnadeema/Leitrim Full Forward Eamon Hyland, who was not having the
best of luck with the breaking ball up to this point scored a point
after taking a pass from Michael Flanagan who had made a great run
through the Kilbeacanty defence. Eamon scored another point a minute
later after a great catch and turn. Stephen Lambert replayed with
another pointed free on 20 mins before Centre Half Forward Noel
Glynn, who was giving David Tierney plenty to worry about got in for
a wonderful point. Kilbeacanty were now playing the best hurling of
the game so far and after the Kilnadeema/Leitrim defence failed to
clear what looked like a simple ball on 25 mins, Stephen Lambert
broke away with the ball after he blocked down the clearance to
shoot a tremendous goal which gave Mark Herlihy no chance . Tom
Tierney steadied the ship though for Kilnadeema/Leitrim with two
late pointed free's to bring the half time scoring to an end and
leave the scoreboard reading 1.06 to 1.04 in the East Galway sides
favour. Both teams would have expected a little more from the lads
and this made for a much better second half. Justin Fahey soon gave
Kilbeacanty much better hope with the opening point of the second
half after he made a great break. Tom Tierney replayed with another
pointed free on 3 mins and he soon added another point from play
after a great Michael Flanagan run to open up a three point gap.
This gap was stretched to 6 points a minute later when Frankie Burke
struck a great ball into the Full Forward line which Eamon Hyland
read perfectly and soon the Kilnadeema/Leitrim captain had the net
rattled with a goal. We were now seeing Eamon at his best as he soon
added another point from play to leave the score line reading 2.09
to 1.05. Martin Kerins soon pulled back a point for Kilbeacanty and
Stephen Lambert reduced the lead further a min later with a pointed
free. Then we had the point of the game when Niall Tierney struck a
great point from 65 yards out after taking a great pass from
Midfielder Frankie Burke. We now had seven minutes without a score
before David Tierney received a heavy challenge which resulted in a
free further up the field which brother Tom pointed to open up
a seven point lead. Kilbeacanty did not give up though and had three
points in a row from Justin Fahey, Noel Glynn and Stephen Lambert
which put them back in contention at only four back. Eamon Hyland
soon replayed with another point on 29 mins. Niall Donoghue got
another back for Kilbeacanty before Kevin Boyle received a second
yellow card and with it a red to finish the game on the sideline.
From the resulting free Stephen Lambert point from close in to close
the gap to three. Time had run out though on his side and
Kilnadeema/Leitrim held on for a good victory on a final score line
of 2.12 to 1.12. With only one game left to play against
Ahascragh/Fohenagh next week Kilnadeema/Leitrim will be anxious to
secure the quarter final spot. It was a day when the team
needed just to grind out a result and there was little room for
fancy hurling. |
