Junior B team disappointing in defeat to Moycullen

Junior B hurling championship round one in Clarenbridge on Monday June 4th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.12  Moycullen 2.15
Kilnadeema/Leitrim Junior B team have high hopes of at least qualifying for the quarter finals of this year's championship with a very good and experienced panel of players available to John Kennedy and his Selectors, especially with the Intermediate team having used none of the players yet in their championship. So it was with a good degree of confidence that they took on Moycullen in their opening game on Bank Holiday Monday June 4th in Clarenbridge. Kilnadeema\Leitrim had most of the play in the opening 10 minutes and after some good chances were missed Corner Forward Cathal Shiel got the first point from play on 6 mins. All the pressure they were putting Moycullen under finally paid off two minutes later when Full Forward Kevin Molloy goaled after both Brian Daniels and Raymond Larkin were involved in  a great build up. A Minute later Brian Costello made it the third man in the Full Forward line to score when he got  a great point from near the side line to put his side 1.02 to no score ahead. Moycullen who were a big physical team now began to come into the game much more and within 4 minutes they had added 4 points to cut the lead to one, their points coming from Michael Dempsey, Aodh Daveron, Josh Flaherty and Barry Connolly. Kilnadeema/Leitrim got their first score in six minutes when Brian Costello scored a lovely point from 40 yards out. Kevin Molloy soon added another point from a free to put three between the sides again 1.04 to 0.04. Moycullen were now dominating in the key area's of the field and soon they were level with three unanswered points  from Barry Connolly again, County minor Eanna Noone with a free from 80 yards out and Michael Dempsey. Danny Burke brought off a great save in the Kilnadeema/Leitrim goal to deny former county star Aodh Daveron a certain goal. Barry Enright with a free for Moycullen had the final score of the half from a free to leave the score line reading 0.08 to 1.04 in the West Galway side's favour. There was much to do then for the second half for Kilnadeema/Leitrim as they had played second fiddle for most of the first half. Soon after half time Midfielder Barry Connolly added his third point of the game for Moycullen and Barry Enright soon added another from a free. Tony Kelly was now introduced for Kilnadeema/Leitrim and he certainly improved matters considerably. Their was more disappointment soon after though when Barry Enright got in for a goal to put Moycullen ahead 1.10 to 1.04. Padraig McLoughlin soon rallied the troops with  a wonderful point from over 100 yards and Kevin Molloy soon added another from play on 7 mins. Moycullen responded though with two points of their own both from frank Enright on 9 and 10 mins. Cathal Shiel then scored his second point of the game. After this Moycullen really took over and added 1.01 in 7 mins from Michael Dempsey with a goal and Frank Enright with a point. With only 10 minutes left Kilnadeema/Leitrim looked in real trouble 9 points down 2.13 to 1.07. For the next ten minutes they took over completely inspired by the direct play of Tony Kelly at Centre Half Forward. Jason Collins raised some hope with a well taken goal and he added a point a minute later to reduce the lead to 5. Kevin Molloy then added a long range free before Tony Kelly scored a delightful point from near the side line  to leave the score now reading 2.13 to 2.10 with six mins left. Cathal Shiel who was starved of possession all through soon added his third point of the hour and the possibility of victory became much more likely a minute later when Brian Daniels scored  a lovely point to leave the minimum between the sides. Unfortunally this was as good as it got as two goal chances were missed by Kilnadeema/Leitrim and two more points were added by Moycullen and Frank Enright to close the scoring at 2.15 to 2.12. Kilnadeema/Leitrim will be disappointed with the performance which was only for 20 minutes out of the sixty. They will have to pick it up considerably if they are to have any chance of progressing to the quarter finals.
Scorers: Kevin Molloy 1.02, Jason Collins 1.01, Cathal Shiel 0.03, Brian Costello 0.02, Padraig McLoughlin 0.01, Brian Daniels 0.01, Tony Kelly 0.01.

Junior B team get championship back on track with win
over City side

Junior B hurling championship round two played in Carnmore on Saturday June 16th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.13   Salthill  0.09

Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Salthill meet in the second round of the Junior B championship at Carnmore on Saturday June 16th. This was a must win game for Kilnadeema/Leitrim having lost their opening game to Moycullen. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had much the better start and got a tonic goal on 7 minutes when Brian Daniels hit a long ball towards goal which some how deceived the Salthill Goalie and ended up in the net. A Minute later Kevin Molloy added a point from  a 65 and scored a another free on 12 minutes to leave the score board reading 1.02 to no score early in the game. Tony Kelly who had the distension of playing against his brother James in the Salthill team then scored a lovely point from  a line ball. Salthill finally got on the scoreboard with a pointed free and added another from play a minute later. Cathal Shiel then pointed from play for the East Galway side before Kevin Molloy scored his third point again from a free on 22 mins. Kevin then added another pointed free a minute later to leave the score reading 1.06 to 0.02 after 23 mins. Salthill added another point from a free 2 minutes later before Kevin Molloy added his fifth point on 30 mins. Salthill closed the first half scoring on 31 mins with another pointed free to leave the half time score reading 1.07 to 0.04. Salthill opened the second half scoring on 5 minutes with a point from play before Kevin Molloy added a point on 10 mins again from a free. Salthill kept in touch with a pointed free 3 minutes later to leave the score reading 1.08 to 0.06. Raymond Larkin then came through from midfield to score  a lovely point on 15 mins. Brian Daniels then got  a point from play to go with his first half goal on 17 minutes. Tony Kelly added his second point this time from play before Salthill got another point back from a free on 20 mins. Kevin Molloy got his seventh point one minute later again from  a free  which Salthill replyed to. Tony Kelly who was really good all through then got his third point on 30 mins. Salthill added the last score of the game a minute later to leave the final score reading 1.13 to  0.09. This was a workmanlike performance from Kilnadeema/Leitrim and sets them up nicely for their final group game against Beagh. A Win will put the team through to the Quarter finals.

Beagh no match for Junior B team as they qualify
for quarter finals

Junior B  Hurling Championship played in Kilbeacanty on Sunday July 8th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.17  Beagh  0.04

The brilliant news to come out of this game is that the Kilnadeema/Leitrim Junior B team have qualified for the knockout stages of this year's championship after a very easy and comprehensive victory over south Galway side Beagh on Sunday Evening July 8th in Kilbeacanty. This was a game that really showed how strong this team can be as they scored at will all day. Kevin Molloy opened the scoring after one minute with a pointed free before the first of 15 scores from play came when Corner Forward Cathal Shiel pointed a minute later. Beagh soon replayed with a point from play themselves before points followed from impressive forwards Danny Burke and Brian Costello on 5 and 6 minutes to open up a 3 point lead. Cathal Shiel who is enjoying a new lease of life as a forward in 2007 then added his second point from play on 10 minutes and Brian Costello who was enjoying more freedom as a half forward also tacked on his second a minute later. Beagh were already in trouble but kept in touch with a second point from a free a minute later. Danny Burke with two further points and Brian Costello with an impressive three more scores all from  play had Kilnadeema/Leitrim in cruse control by the 22 minute with Beagh only reply a point from another free sandwiched in between. There were no further scores to the half time break as the score line read Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.11 Beagh 0.03. The second half was a poor affair as Beagh offered no sign of a comeback to the Kilnadeema/Leitrim lead while the east Galway side took the foot off the pedal as well. Jason Collins opened the scoring after half time with a point from play before Beagh replyed with another pointed free on 12 minutes ( there only score of the second half). Brian Costello then added his sixth point half way through the half before Kevin Molloy added his second pointed free of the day two minutes later. Kilnadeema/Leitrim now brought in three substitutes before Cathal Shiel added another point on 20 minutes. Kevin Molloy with another point from play and finally substitute Adrian Comhar also scored from play on 28 minutes to close out the scoring on a great day for all associated with this team. The team can now take a welcome break before they play again on 11th August.

Molloy stars as Junior B team scrape draw in Quarter final with Rahoon/Newcastle

Junior B hurling Championship Quarter-final played in Ballindeeren on Friday August 17th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.08  Rahoon/Newcastle  1.11

The knockout stages of the Junior B hurling championship arrived for Kilnadeema/Leitrim when they took on city side Rahoon/Newcastle in the Quarter-final at Ballindeeren on Friday August 17th. Kilnadeema/Leitrim who had already suffered a defeat to this same opposition in the Junior league earlier in the year were forced to lineout without centre half back Fergal Conneely who was late arriving from Dublin for the game, it would make you question a Friday evening game. A Good start was always going to be very important and certainly Kilnadeema/Leitrim got just the start required with corner forward Padraig McLoughlin opening the scoring after 5 minutes with a  point from play. Rahoon/Newcastle responded immediately with a point from play on 6 minutes  and from a free soon after to jump one point clear. Then up stepped super star forward Kevin Molloy to stamp his mark on the game with two goals within two minutes on 15 and 17 minutes to move 5 points clear. His first goal went directly into the net from a 65, before he goaled from play after collecting a great ball which was delivered out of defence by Cathal Shiel. Rahoon/Newcastle responded with a goal of their own a minute later and a point soon followed to bring the game back to a one point game, before Kevin Molloy point a free a minute later for his side. Brian Costello soon added another point from play before Rahoon/Newcastle had the final point of the half also from play on the stroke of half time to leave the score board reading 2.03 to 1.05 at the break. Fergal Conneely made his appearance at half time as a replacement for Jason Collins as Rahoon/Newcastle soon took control of the game with three points all from free's with a Brian Costello point sandwiched in between to leave the city side one point clear on 42 minutes. Rahoon/Newcastle soon made it a two point game with another pointed free. Scores were hard to come by at this stage as Kilnadeema/Leitrim were been completely outplayed even though the there was only two points between the sides. Kevin Molloy proved yet again how good a free taker he is as he scored three in a row on 53, 54 and 58 minutes to push his side within touching distance of a semi-final spot. Rahoon/Newcastle were not finished though and replyed with two points from play to move one ahead with time almost up. Kilnadeema/Leitrim got a free on the halfway line which had to be scored direct and Kevin Molloy duly obliged to force a replay. Kilnadeema/Leitrim would probably have been happy to settle for a draw in the end as they were in big trouble at stages in the second half. This game should bring them on a lot for the replay. The final score reading 2.08 to 1.11.

Scorers: Kevin Molloy 2.05, Brian Costello 0.02, Padraig McLoughlin 0.01.

Dramatic replay ends in stalemate once more as Rahoon/Newcastle score wonder Lineball to force extra time

Junior Hurling championship replay played in Loughrea on Sunday August 26th

   Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.14  Rahoon/Newcastle 0.17

2007 had been the year of the replay's especially with the great battle between Limerick and Tipperary in the Munster championship earlier in the Summer and now a new series has just begun between Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Rahoon/Newcastle junior B teams in the quarter final of the Galway hurling championship as extra time still failed to separate the team who must now meet for a third time to decide the outcome. After a disappointing display in the first game Kilnadeema/Leitrim were hoping for much better this time especially as the game was been played in Loughrea and on a Sunday evening. Kevin Molloy who was their star player in the drawn game opened the scoring after a minute with a point from play. Sean Heffernan who is also a wonderful free taker soon levelled up the game with  a free for Rahoon/Newcastle. Raymond Conneely soon put the city side one point up with a point from play and Sean Heffernan  made it a two point lead with another free on 13 minutes. Kevin Molloy pulled a point back with a free a minute later before the same player scored a wonderful if slightly lucky goal on 16 minutes when his free from near the sideline flew into the top of the net to put his team back in front 1.02 to 0.03. Brian Costello soon extended the lead with a point from play after Kevin Molloy made the opening for him. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were enjoying the best spell of the game for them and Danny Burke soon scored a lovely point from play. Kevin Molloy and Sean Heffernan soon swopted points to leave four between the team on 21 minutes. This trend continued until half time with Kevin Molloy scoring two free's and Sean Heffernan one to leave Kilnadeema/Leitrim ahead by 5 at half time 1.07 to 0.05. The second half started very poorly for Kilnadeema/Leitrim as it took them 21 minutes to score while Rahoon/Newcastle soon went about reducing the lead. Seamus Coyne opened the scoring on 5 minutes with a point from play before Sean Heffernan added three points by the 14th minute to leave just one point between the sides 1.07 to 0.09. Raymond Conneely soon levelled up the game with a point from play and he added another soon after to put the city team back in front and looking winners all the way as Kilnadeema/Leitrim struggled all over the field. Kevin Molloy eventually got them off the mark with a pointed free on 21 minutes, but Sean Heffernan soon cancelled that score out with a pointed free on 25 minutes. Then Kilnadeema/Leitrim decided they had a battle on their hands to stay in the championship and responded admirably with first Kevin Molloy equalising with another free and then corner forward Danny Burke scored a wonderful point from play on 30 minutes with what looked like the winner, but Rahoon/Newcastle had one more piece of magic left in them as they won  a lineball near the 21yard line and Raymond Conneely scored as good a lineball as ever seen in this venue to force the game into extra time on a score line of 1.10 to 0.13. The first half of extra time belonged to Rahoon/Newcastle as they outscored Kilnadeema/Leitrim by 3 points to one. Sean Heffernan opened their account with another free on 2 minutes before Bob O'Connor added another from play. Brian Costello eventually got one back on 10 minutes from play before Raymond Conneely added another  to leave his team leading 1.11 to 0.16 at half time in extra time. It was getting very dark now and we wondered would the game finish at all. Kevin Molloy soon put only one between the team with another free on 2 mins before Brian Costello added his third point of the day two minutes later to level up the game again. Kevin Molloy, who like the drawn game was the scorer in chief soon had Kilnadeema/Leitrim ahead again with another free on 6 minutes before wing back Aiden Hickey scored a wonderful point to level up the match again and this proved to be the final score 1.14 to 0.17. It would have been unlucky on either side to have lost this one and now we look forward to a third instalment.

Scorers: 1.09, Brian Costello 0.03, Danny Burke 0.02.

Bitter Disappointment as Junior team lose quarter final by one point after 220 minutes of hurling against Rahoon/Newcastle

Junior Hurling championship quarter final 2nd replay played in Athenry on Saturday September 8th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.10 Rahoon/Newcastle 0.11

The Junior B hurling championship quarter final saga which had gripped the county in recent weeks saw Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Rahoon/Newcastle meet for the third time in four week to try and sort out who would meet Abbeyknockmoy in the semi-final. As had been the case in the other two games this was a very close game with the result in doubt right up to the full time whistle. Cathal Shiel who suffered rib injuries in the previous game opened the scoring with a point from play on 4 minutes and this was followed shortly by another from Brian Costello to give his side the perfect start. We then had to wait until the 15th minutes for our next score and it was the opening score for Rahoon/Newcastle when Sean Heffernan scored a point from a free to close the gap before Kevin Molloy added a pointed  free for Kilnadeema/Leitrim shortly afterwards to leave the score reading 0.03 to 0.01 after 16 mins. Rahoon/Newcastle know they were now in a match yet again and decided to wake up with four points in a five minute period to take the lead for the first time. Sean Heffernan scored the first before Bob O'Connor scored from play on 20 minutes. Raymond Conneely who was equally effective in the drawn games soon added two more points both from play. The scoring spree continued for the city side two mins later when their centre half back stole up to add a point from play to leave his side ahead 0.06 to 0.03. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were stung into action soon afterwards when Kevin Molloy showed leadership with two points, one from play to close the gap to one point and this changed again on 32 mins when Brian Costello brought the game all level with another point from play to leave it all level at the break 6pts each. Rahoon/Newcastle were fast out of the blocks in the second half and added two points very quickly through Bob O'Connor and Raymond Conneely on 2 and 3 minutes. Kevin Molloy from a free and Brian Costello soon had the game all level again and we wondered would these team ever be separated. We had to wait until 20 minutes for the next score when Sean Heffernan put Rahoon/Newcastle back in front with a point from play before he scored a wonderful Line ball four minutes later to open up a two point gap. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were defending brilliantly at this stage but were making very little progress up front and soon their was three point between the sides as a Rahoon/Newcastle substitute scored from play. Kevin Molloy tried so hard to keep the dream alive for this side and he soon scored a point from play on 30 minutes before he added another point from a free a minute later to close the gap to just one point. Kevin with a overhead pull which flashed just wide and a Raymond Larkin shot at goal from a difficult angle was as near as Kilnadeema/Leitrim came to that crucial equaliser and so Rahoon/Newcastle had prevailed by the narrowest of margins over 220 minutes of championship hurling as the dream died for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. They will be very disappointed as they never reached their potential in any of the three games

Scorers: Kevin Molloy 6 pts, Brian Costello 3pts, Cathal Shiel 1 pt.
