Winning start to 2009 league for Intermediate team

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.15 Ahascragh/Fohenagh 2.10

Kilnadeema/Leitrim  under the new management of Paul Kennedy and Shane Kelly made a winning start to the 2009 Intermediate league with a well merited victory over north Galway side Ahascragh/Fohenagh at a dry, but windy Leitrim on Sunday March 1st. Having to field without many of the regular players who were unavailable for this weekend, Kilnadeema/Leitrim were forced to ask five of the Junior team who played the previous day to field again in this game. Ahascragh/Fohenagh playing against the wind in the first half made the better start and lead by two points after four minutes with points from JP Egan and Finbar Donnellan. Sean Burke soon opened Kilnadeema/Leitrim's account with a point from play. Kevin Molloy, one of the five Junior players rolled back the years with another great performance and he got his first point on 11 minutes to level up the game. The vital break in this first half arrived soon after when Eamon Coleman got on the end of a long delivery to shot to the net and leave his side ahead 1.02 to 0.02. Ahascragh/Fohenagh were rocked but soon recovered and were back level two minutes alter when a long free from Kevin Gavin was put in the net by David Costello. Kevin Molloy with two free's and a brilliant point from Eamon Coleman had Kilnadeema/Leitrim in control after 20 minutes leading by three. Sean burke and Eamon Hyland then added two  more great points, also from play, before Kevin Molloy added two more points from free's. Eamon Hyland, who was playing very well at centre Half Forward then tacked on another good point before Kevin Molloy and Alan Smyth swopted points from free's. to leave the half time score reading 1.11 to 1.03 in Kilnadeema/Leitrim's favour. With the wind at their back Ahascragh/Fohenagh were quick out of the blocks in the second half and goaled almost straight away from Alan Smyth from a close in free. Sean Lally with two points from free's and Kevin Molloy with one reply left just four points between the teams after 10 minutes, 1.12 to 2.05. We then had two good points by opposite midfielders, Patrick Hartigan and Fergal Nevin. Sean Lally and Kevin Gavin with two pointed free's after 16 minutes left two points between the sides with Ahascragh/Fohenagh looking like winners. The final fourteen minutes were evenly fought with Kevin Molloy adding two more pointed free's and Kevin Gavin replying for his team with one from play and one from a free to leave the final score line reading Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.15 Ahascragh/Fohenagh 2.10. This was a good opening game to the season and hopefully will give the players the vital encouragement to go on and win many more games this year.
