Kilnadeema/Leitrim prove too strong for Ballygar in opening Minor game

Kilnadeema/Leitrim got their minor campaign off to a winning start with a comprehensive victory over Ballygar on Easter Monday in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe. Kilnadeema/Leitrim with a mixture of experienced and some very young players were always on top on their North East Galway opponents. Even though the early stages of the first half were very close with points being swooped all the time Kilnadeema/Leitrim were finding it easier to score. Michael McLoughlin opened the scoring on 5 mins, before Eoin O'Toole and Gary Curley traded points with Ballygar all day and it was Dara Herlihy was the first to put daylight between the sides with a goal on 30 mins to leave the score at half time 1-6 to 0-4. Ballygar started brightly in the second half with two early points to leave just a goal in it but this was to be their last scores of the day as Kilnadeema/Leitrim took over completely and scoring at will with the second goal coming from Eoin O'Toole after a great pass from Dara Herlihy. Eoin was to finish with 1-08 in  man of the match performance. This was a good start for the team but only that as Ballygar were very poor and much tougher games lie ahead.

Full Forward line star in victory over Kilbeacanty

Minor hurling championship round two in Kilbeacanty
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.19  Kilbeacanty 1.05
Kilnadeema/Leitrim
played their second minor hurling championship game against Kilbeacanty on their home ground on Tuesday May 8th after agreeing to the change of venue. After their victory over Ballygar in the first round on the 19th April, Kilnadeema/Leitrim had good victories in challenge games over Carnmore, Killimordaly and Kiltormer in preparation for this game. This game was a very close affair for the first quarter with scores been even on five occasions. Brian Gardiner opened the scoring for Kilnadeema/Leitrim on three minutes before Gary Curley added their second five minutes later. Colm Kelly who had a very good game throughout added the third 3 minutes later and soon added another on 15 minutes before Tom Barrett made it 5 to 4 on 16 minutes. The big breakthrough came on 22 minutes when full forward Eoin O'Toole got on the end of a Tom Barrett long ball to flick the ball to the net to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim ahead 1.05 to 0.04. Gary Curley, Dara Herlihy and Tom Barrett with his second point added to the score line before half time to leave their side ahead 1.08 to 0.05 at the break. The second half almost totally belonged to Kilnadeema/Leitrim as the forwards really opened up the Kilbeacanty defence. First Colm Kelly scored on 1 minute before Tom Barrett scored his third point from a lovely lineball. Then Dara Herlihy added to his tally with  a point before Eoin O'Toole and Dara again added two more points to make the score 1.13 to 0.05 after 6 minutes. Tom Barrett and Michael McLoughlin soon two more as the forwards were now scoring for fun. On 10 minutes came the really killer score for the south Galway side as Dara Herlihy scored a goal with a wonderful flick. Eoin O'Toole then added two more points before Tom Barrett scored his fifth point from play on 23 minutes to leave the score reading 2.18 to 0.05. Steven Lambert soon added a goal for Kilbeacanty from a free, their only score of the second half, but not to be out done Dara Herlihy finished as top scorer of the day with a another goal on 28 minutes before Eoin O'Toole added the last point of the game to leave the final score at 3.19 to 1.05 in Kilnadeema/Leitrim's favour. While this was a very good performance much stiffer tests lie ahead starting with Ardrahan next week.

Minor team qualify for quarterfinals after wonderful performance against Ardrahan

Minor Hurling championship round three in Castledaly Wednesday May 16th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.14   Ardrahan 3.11

The game of the round in the minor B hurling championship between Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ardrahan took place on a very wet evening May 16th in Castledaly. Kilnadeema/Leitrim with two wins in the group are setting the pace, but Ardrahan would be a different class to what they had meet so far. Kilnadeema/Leitrim started with the wind and rain behind them and they made a very good start with wingback Mark Kelly opening the scoring with a point after a good run on 2 minutes. A Minute later Brian Gardiner, who had a brilliant game at midfield struck another point from over 50 yards out. Dara Herlihy kept the scoring going a minute later with a lovely point from out near the sideline. Ardrahan with three county minors in their side John Burke, Ger Bond and Gerry Hennelly got their first point on 7 mins. Eoin O'Toole soon extended Kilnadeema/Leitrim's lead again 2 mins later with a free before Brian Gardiner scored his second point on 12 minutes after a great catch and run 45 yards out. Gerry Hennelly then cut the lead with a pointed free and they scored another point a minute later to leave the score board reading 5 pts to 3pts after 16 minutes. Dara Herlihy stretched Kilnadeema/Leitrim's lead again with another point after a great move involving Brian Gardiner and Mark Kelly. Paul Howard was then called on to make a great save before Ger Bond pointed on 23 mins to cut the lead again to 2 pts. The first big breakthrough came on 25 minutes when corner forward Gary Curley got on the end of a Michael McLoughlin attempted point to flick the ball to the Ardrahan net. Ger Bond, who was brilliant right through cut the lead again with another point and they scored another on 27 mins to cut the lead to a goal. Paul Howard then made another great save before a second goal came for Kilnadeema/Leitrim, this time by Dara Herlihy after he got first to a Tom Barrett shot that came back off the post to open up a 6 point lead. Kilnadeema/Leitrim who knew they would need a big lead at half time added two more in injury time through Gary Curley and Tom Barrett to leave the half time score reading 2.08 to 0.06.
Ardrahan came out for the second half very determined and soon cut the lead with  a goal of their own after Paul Howard saved a high ball which stuck in the mud. Eoin O'Toole responded immediately with a free before Ardrahan added two more points to leave the score line reading 209 to 1.08 after 6 minutes, before we had major drama when Ardrahan county star Gerry Hennelly was badly injured when he slid into the concrete poles around the field. He had to be stretchered off and later taken to Hospital. Aiden Monaghan was then introduced as a substitute instead of Michael Donoghue. After the long delay for the injury the game took off again and Ardrahan soon had something to smile about when a long ball in from midfield deceived Paul Howard and ended up in the net on 19 minutes to cut the lead to one point. Gary Curley and Ger Bond then swopted points before Colm Kelly reacted first to a breaking ball to guide home another goal for his side. Tom Barrett then scored a great point after running half way up the sideline to leave the score line reading 3.11 to 2.09 at this stage. Gary Curley and Ger Bond added another point each before Eoin O'Toole scored a great point after a pass from Dara Herlihy, and they combined again a minute later only this time Eoin goaled to open up a nine point lead. Ardrahan did not give up though and soon added 1.01 on 36 minutes. The final score of the game fell to Dara Herlihy 7 minutes into injury time to leave the final score line reading 4.14 to 3.11. This was a brilliant game and a great performance from all the Kilnadeema/Leitrim side who have now qualified for the quarter finals. Brilliant!

Minors struggle to draw with more physical Moycullen

Minor hurling championship round four played in Clarenbridge on Saturday May 19th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.10   Moycullen  1.07

Having already qualified for the preliminary quarter finals of the county minor B hurling championship after their pulsating victory over Ardrahan in midweek, Kilnadeema/Leitrim played their final group game in Clarenbridge on Saturday May 19th against West Galway side Moycullen, who incidentally were playing their first game in the group due to Football commitments. The game was played in very windy conditions and it was Moycullen who had the elements at their backs in the first half but it was Kilnadeema/Leitrim who got the opening score when Eoin O'Toole scored a point from a free early on. Moycullen had a very good free taker themselves in Niall Mannion  who was to score 5 points over the hour. Moycullen really took over after O'Toole's early point and scored the next four points to take a three point lead. Eoin O'Toole responded with another point from play, his sides only two points in that first half. Moycullen continued to score and added another 3 points before half time to leave the West Galway side 7 points ahead at half time. Kilnadeema/Leitrim set about reducing the lead quickly on the restart and Eoin O'Toole continued where he left off in the first half with another point from play. Gearoid Whelan from a 65 added another point before Corner Forward's Dara Herlihy and Gary Curley both added a point from play to leave the score line reading 7pts to 6pts half way through the second half. Gearoid Whelan, though playing at centre Half back then came forward to score a brilliant point  to level the match. Not to be outdone mark Kelly another of the half back line also found himself in a forward roll and it was from here he scored another point to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim ahead for only the second time. Dara Herlihy soon added another point to open up  a two point gap, before disaster struck when Moycullen were awarded a 21mtr free and there Full Forward duly dispatched   to the net to put Moycullen back in front very much against the run of play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim looked like they were about to loose their first game of the group until Wing Forward Tom Barrett steppe dup to score a wonderful equaliser. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were well worth the draw at least and probably for their second half performance should have won with a few points to spare. With such a high scoring average, it seems likely that Kilnadeema/Leitrim will qualify directly for the quarter finals and so avoid the qualifiers. For now though the team will take a well earned break and prepare for their exams, looking forward to getting back into action in September, 4 months later.

Scorers: Eoin O'Toole 0.03, Gearoid Whelan 0.02, Dara Herlihy 0.02, Gary Curley 0.01, Mark Kelly 0.01, Tom Barrett 0.01.

Quarter final defeat for Minor's

Old rivals Cappatagle prove too strong again

Minor hurling championship Quarter final played in Killimor on Sunday September 30th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.06  Cappatagle 3.09

The last weekend in September 2007 will not be looked back on with many fond memories by Kilnadeema/Leitrim hurling club as they lost two quarter final's within 24 hours and both played in Killimor. With the Intermediate team losing on the Saturday it was the turn of the very promising minor side to take to the field on the Sunday morning when they took on great old rivals Cappatagle in the minor B quarter final with the winners progressing to meet either Carnmore or Portumna in the semi-finals. Kilnadeema/Leitrim started very well and were a point up after two minutes when Dara Herlihy shot a point from a free and he doubled the lead a few minutes later with another free. Alan Dolan opened Cappatagle's account on 7 mins also with a free before Mark Loughnane shot the first goal of the gale a minute later to open up a two point lead for his side 1.01 to 0.02. Then we had two points from football star Emmet Malone for Cappatagle to put four points  between the sides. Gary Curley, who was Kilnadeema/Leitrim's main scoring stars all year then shot a point from play on 17 minutes and very little separated the sides at this stage. County minor star Alan Dolan, who is also under age next year had a major influience on the game and he he soon shot two further points, the first from a free and the second from a line ball to stretch Cappatagle's lead. Tom Barrett reduced the gap on 24 minutes with a point from play as Kilnadeema/Leitrim tried to stay in touch. Ronan Garvey made life even harder for them when he shot Cappatagle's second goal a minute later and now Kilnadeema/Leitrim were in a real battle. Two further points followed in the first half with Alan Dolan scoring his fourth point from a free and Dara Herlihy shooting a point from play on 30 mins. to leave the half time score reading 2.06 to 0.05. Kilnadeema/Leitrim knew they had a lot to do against a team who had got the better of there many times in the post at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 levels and they certainly went about getting right back into the game straight from the restart when Tom Barrett crashed home his sides first goal and reduced the lead to a more manageable four points. Luck didn't shine on Kilnadeema/Leitrim long though when after a blatant trip on Full back Ruairi Costello, first half goal scorer Ronan Garvey got in for his second and Cappatagle's third goal to open up a seven point lead again 3.06 to 1.05. From here on it was all one way traffic as Alan Dolan shot three points in a row between the 12th  and the 17th minute, two from free's and one from a 65. With their team ten points down Kilnadeema/Leitrim finished the stronger and added a goal and a point before the finish, first when Dara Herlihy shot a free on 20 mins and then five minutes from the end when Colm Kelly shot his sides second goal to reduce  the lead to six. It was all too little too late as Cappatagle saw out the rest of game to win comfortably enough with the final score line reading 3.09 to 2.06. Kilnadeema/Leitrim will be very disappointed as they looked a very promising team early on in the year especially when they defeated Ardrahan in a brilliant performance. What was obvious later in the year was that the group might not have been that strong as all three teams that qualified failed to make the semi-finals. Hopefully a few of these players will progress to senior in the future.
