Tierney's brace power the Ramblers to glory
|
Ramblers made their first visit
to Terryland Park a memorable one as a David Tierney
brace saw the Leitrim Kilnadeema based side collect the MJ Crowe
Auctioneers Division 4 Cup following a uncompromising clash with
West Utd on Friday April 18th. On an occasion when chances were at a
premium, it was the city side who broke the deadlock when Gavin
Colleran forced home a scrambled opener from close range. The lead
was short-lived, however, for within minutes the contest was level.
On this occasion, it was a family affair as Tom Tierney crossed for
brother David to side foot home from 15 yards to tie up matters. The
work rate of David Spellman and Mike Flanagan kept Ramblers in the
ascendancy, but a Mike Keating header that was saved was the closest
either side came to adding to their tally before the end of normal
time. Subsequently, West were struck a blow when William Grant
suffered a shoulder injury which resulted in him departing the
scene. Tierney who has been a prolific scorer throughout the
campaign eventually struck for the winner in the second period of
extra time. On this occasion fellow front man Mike Keating who set
up the opportunity and Tierney drove the delivery into the top
corner for a dramatic win to give the club their first silverware
since 2005. Subs used: Liam Geargthy, Mick Regan, Brian Flaherty
