Intermediate team finally get season under way with defeat to Abbeyknockmoy in league

Abbeyknockmoy 0.10 Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.09

Kilnadeema/Leitrim finally got their season under way after a few postponements when they travelled to Abbeyknockmoy to take on the home side in the Intermediate League on Sunday April 6th; this was a warm up match for the 2007 League final against Moycullen, which takes place next weekend. As is understandable with all sides starting out this time of year the team looked very rusty with a lot of poor hurling on show from both sides. The game was played on a very dry bumpy pitch and we had a strong breeze blowing right down the field with Kilnadeema/Leitrim having it to their backs in the first half. Ronan Cooley opened the scoring for Abbeyknockmoy with a point from play after 5 minutes. David Tierney, playing at full forward opened the visitors account soon after with a point from play after good work from Patrick Deely, another playing in an unfamiliar role of centre forward. Tom Tierney added another point on 11 minutes, this time from a free. Scores were very hard to come by and we had to wait seven more minutes before Liam Geargthy scored a brilliant point from midfield. Former Galway minor captain John Culkin soon added a free for Abbeyknockmoy and Tom Tierney did likewise a minute later to leave the score at 0.04 to 0.02 after 22 minutes. Tom then added a lovely point from play after great work by brother David. John Culkin then got a point from play for Abbeyknockmoy as they kept in touch. Tom Tierney with his fourth point of the half in injury time left the score at the break 0.06 to 0.03. Abbeyknockmoy would be the happier at this stage. The second half never really got going with Abbeyknockmoy looking much more likely to score when in possession. We had to wait until 9 minutes before the first score arrived with Tom Tierney scoring from a free. Brian Hodgins soon replied with a point from play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim introduced two substitutes at this stage with Brian Costello and Gearoid Whelan coming into the action. It was looking good for the east Galway side when after 13 minutes David Tierney scored a great point from play out near the sideline to leave his side a head 0.08 to 0.04. John Culkin kept Abbey in touch with another point from play after 14 minutes and he added a pointed free two minutes later to close the gap to two with fourteen minutes to play. Kilnadeema/Leitrim’s last score of the game soon arrived from Substitute Ruairi Costello from play. Abbeyknockmoy now sensed that revenge was now on for last year’s two defeats to Kilnadeema/Leitrim and they drove on from here to the end with first a point from John Culkin from play after 23 minutes. With Frankie Burke now been added as a substitute Abbeyknockmoy soon drew level with a good point from Paul Lally before fittingly John Culkin shot over the winner from a free on the 29th minute as he was one of the best players on view all through to leave the final score line reading 0.10 to 0.09. For Kilnadeema/Leitrim this was certainly a wake call to both John Whelan and the players that big improvement is needed and this must start in the league final next weekend.
