Intermediate team overcome Ahascragh/Fohenagh with great first half performance

Intermediate hurling championship round three in Ballinasloe on Saturday June 16th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.13   Ahascragh/Fohenagh 0.14

Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ahascragh/Fohenagh meet in the final round games in group D of the Intermediate hurling championship in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe on Saturday June 16th. The situation was very clear with regard to what the result would mean to the group with a victory the only result that would keep Ahascragh/Fohenagh in the competition instead of Kilbeacanty. Kilnadeema/Leitrim, who had already qualified for the quarter finals just wanted to keep up their winning run. The game was a tough physical battle all through with Ahascragh/Fohenagh finishing the game with fourteen men. The North East Galway club opened the scoring with a point from a free after one minute from Sean Lally. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were quickly into their stride though and after a free taken by Tom Tierney was miss hit, Corner Forward Alan Flaherty was on hand to score the opening goal of the game. A Minute later captain Eamon Hyland scored a great point from near the side line to put his side  a goal ahead. Tom Tierney then scored two points from free's on 9 and 10 minutes before Sean Lally got Ahascragh/Fohenagh second point. On 18 minutes Tom Tierney scored a lovely point from play and a minute later Wing Forward Sean Burke also scored from play to open up a 1.05 to 0.02 lead. Sean Lally got the next two points of the game both from free's to keep Ahascragh/Fohenagh well in the game. Tom Tierney then added another pointed free before brother David who was playing at Midfield scored a lovely long range point after a great pass from Liam Geargthy. With the game still in the balance Kilnadeema/Leitrim really killed off the show in a three minute spell with two brilliant goals, first when Michael Flanagan struck a great ground stroke to the net and then when Tom Tierney hit a  brilliant shot into the roof of the net. In between Kevin Lally of Ahascragh/Fohenagh and Niall Tierney  swopted points. The final score of the half fell to the man who opened the scoring Sean Lally with another free to leave the half time score line reading 3.08  to  0.06. With the difference been eleven points it would need a mighty effort in the second half from Ahascragh/Fohenagh to relive their dream. Like the first half  Ahascragh/Fohenagh opened the scoring in the second as Anthony Griffin scored a brilliant Lineball. Then the game got really over physical with hits been given and taken by both sides. The result at the end of all this was the sending off of Alan Moclair for hitting down on Tom Tierney. This was  a big blow to his side. Anthony Griffin added another point on 7 mins. to close the gap to nine. Tom Tierney opened his sides second half account with  a pointed free. Ahascragh/Fohenagh added two more points from play from Anthony Griffin again and Sean Lally. Alan Flaherty then scored a wonderful point on the run on 19 minutes to leave the score reading 3.11 to 0.13. Michael Flanagan added the next point on 21 minutes. Tom Tierney who was the games top scorer added another point from a free on 23 mins. Michael Reynolds added the final score of the game on 25 minutes, a point from play to leave the final score line reading 3.13 0.14 in Kilnadeema/Leitrim's favour. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were just glad to get this game out of the way and move on to bigger things, even though they would be unhappy with their second half performance been outscored 8pts to 5pts. For Ahascragh/Fohenagh they were just not good enough in the end. Kilnadeema/Leitrim now take a well earned break before coming back for a quarter final against Mellick/Eyrecoart or Moycullen on the 23rd September.

Junior B hurling championship round two played in Carnmore on Saturday June 16th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.13   Salthill  0.09

Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Salthill meet in the second round of the Junior B championship at Carnmore on Saturday June 16th. This was a must win game for Kilnadeema/Leitrim having lost their opening game to Moycullen. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had much the better start and got a tonic goal on 7 minutes when Brian Daniels hit a long ball towards goal which some how deceived the Salthill Goalie and ended up in the net. A Minute later Kevin Molloy added a point from  a 65 and scored a another free on 12 minutes to leave the score board reading 1.02 to no score early in the game. Tony Kelly who had the distension of playing against his brother James in the Salthill team then scored a lovely point from  a line ball. Salthill finally got on the scoreboard with a pointed free and added another from play a minute later. Cathal Shiel then pointed from play for the East Galway side before Kevin Molloy scored his third point again from a free on 22 mins. Kevin then added another pointed free a minute later to leave the score reading 1.06 to 0.02 after 23 mins. Salthill added another point from a free 2 minutes later before Kevin Molloy added his fifth point on 30 mins. Salthill closed the first half scoring on 31 mins with another pointed free to leave the half time score reading 1.07 to 0.04. Salthill opened the second half scoring on 5 minutes with a point from play before Kevin Molloy added a point on 10 mins again from a free. Salthill kept in touch with a pointed free 3 minutes later to leave the score reading 1.08 to 0.06. Raymond Larkin then came through from midfield to score  a lovely point on 15 mins. Brian Daniels then got  a point from play to go with his first half goal on 17 minutes. Tony Kelly added his second point this time from play before Salthill got another point back from a free on 20 mins. Kevin Molloy got his seventh point one minute later again from  a free  which Salthill replyed to. Tony Kelly who was really good all through then got his third point on 30 mins. Salthill added the last score of the game a minute later to leave the final score reading 1.13 to  0.09. This was a workmanlike performance from Kilnadeema/Leitrim and sets them up nicely for their final group game against Beagh. A Win will put the team through to the Quarter finals.

Junior C team get heavy defeat despite good first half display

Junior C hurling Championship round one played in Killimor on Sunday June 17th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.05  Mullagh  3.16

It is a wonderful sign of the times in Kilnadeema/Leitrim hurling club that they are now able to field three adult teams in the Championship. and the Junior C team opened their campaign in Killimor on Sunday June 17th against Mullagh. They contained many experienced players who had played at the highest grade in previous years with the club, but with the team unable to field their minor players due to the Leaving Cert Exams not yet been complete it was not at it's strongest. While the overall result was disappointing, the first half performance was very competitive and keenly fought. The game all through was light up by the number 15 on both sides Shane O'Looney for Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Mark Finnerty for Mullagh who were both brilliant. Both of these players had the opening scores of the game for their sides, first Finnerty for Mullagh and then an immediate response from O'Looney for Kilnadeema/Leitrim both from play. Niall Connnaughton then put Mullagh back in front with a point from play  on 7 mins. Eric Callanan then added a point from a free for Mullagh before we had the first big score of the day when the for mentioned Shane O'Looney connected with a loose ball in the square to goal after a Michael Geargthy free had dropped short. This put his side ahead for the first time 1.01 to 0.03. We waited 5 minutes before Shane O'Looney scored again, this time a wonderful point on the run. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were on top now in a lot of positions but all this was to change five minutes alter when the defence committed a silly foul on  Mullagh attacker in front of the goals when he was simply going nowhere. The resulting 21 metre free was put in the back of Eamon Coleman's net by Eric Callanan to put Mullagh back in front 1.03 to 1.02. Eamon then made a great save before Mark Finnerty added two more points both from play before Fergal Deely scored a lovely point for Kilnadeema/Leitrim on 27 mins. Mark Finnerty closed the scoring just as he had started with  a point from play  to leave the score board reading 1.06 to 1.03 in Mullagh's favour. If the first half was close and exciting then the second was quiet the opposite with Mullagh taking over all over the field. TJ Lowrey and Ruairi Costello swopted points at the start of the second half before Mullagh took over. A Goal and a point from Mark Finnerty and a point each from Ray Kennedy and  Michael Coen had then ahead 2.10 to 1.04 after 8 mins. John Geargthy then scored  a lovely point for Kilnadeema/Leitrim  a minute later to stop the root. Sadly for him and his team-mates it only got worse as this was his sides last score of the game. It was all Mullagh from here on especially after Michael Geargthy missed a Penalty on 12 mins. Points followed from Eric Callanan, Mark Finnerty and Michael Coen to extend their lead before sub Russell Lynch ) who incidentally started off his hurling career in Kilnadeema National School and played all his under age with the club ) crashed home a third goal for Mullagh on 26 mins. Michael Coen added another point before Mark Finnerty scored two more points, this brought his total to 1.08 in the game all from play. He looks like a player who should be playing in  a much higher grade. For Kilnadeema/Leitrim their will be better days and it was especially good to see Brian Flynn back playing for the club after his two years in America.
