Special Olympics' champion
2007
![]() |
42 year old Kevin Hardiman from Grallagh in Aille brought tremendous honour and glory to his Country, Parish and his family in October 2007 when he represented Ireland in Badminton in the Special Olympics in Shanghai, China. He returned home to a hero's welcome on Saturday 12th October with bon fires burning in his native Kilnadeema after he picked up both a Bronze medal and also a 4th place medal at the games. Playing with his doubles partner Derek Kelly he was unlucky to lose out on a place in the final losing to his Chinese opponents 21-11 and 21-15.He then competed in the singles competition where he was defeated by a Japanese player in the 3rd/4th place playoff 21-17 and 21-17. It was anybody's game all through in both competitions. We have watched many famous Irish sports people returning home with medals from the Olympics down through the years such as Michelle Smyth, John Treacy, Sonia O'Sullivan and the most famous of all Ronnie Delaney, but to see someone from our own parish was just a wonderful feeling. For Kevin, who once played hurling with Kilnadeema this was some achievement especially after what he has had to go through since his car accident many years ago and we in Kilnadeema/Leitrim hurling club send our heart felt congratulations. You are a real star. Well done and maybe we will see you back looking for more medals in Athens in four years time. |
