Under 21 hurling
championship semi-final played in Ballindeeren on Saturday November
24th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.06 Moycullen 2.21
Losing in a semi-final
once is hard on anybody but to lose two years in a row must be very
hard to take for the young hurlers of Kilnadeema/Leitrim as their
hopes of ultimate glory were dashed quiet comprehensively by
Moycullen in a very windy Ballindeeren on Saturday November 24th.
Having come off a very good quarter final victory Kilnadeema/Leitrim
were very hopeful of success but found Moycullen a tough opposition
who were ultimately much too good. Apart from a stiff breeze,
conditions were excellent for this time of year, with the condition
of the pitch a credit to the local club. Despite playing into the
elements, Moycullen took less than a minute to open the scoring
through Conor Bohan. Robert Molloy added a second within minutes. A
Free from Sean Burke and a strong run and score from Ruairi Costello
levelled matters but Kilnadeema/Leitrim never got closer. They lost
centre half forward Fergal Nevin through injury after only three
minutes which was a big blow as Moycullen centre half back Vinnie
Flaherty dominated from here on. Moycullen added six more points
before the half hour to a Sean Burke pointed free.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim probably needed a goal to turn the tide and
Moycullen 'Keeper, Dan Kelly made three solid saves. It was to
Moycullen the goal came; a Philip Lydon deflection to a long a ball
deceiving Mark Herlihy in goal. Sean Burke did add two points in
first half added time . As that added time was a result of two
Kilnadeema/Leitrim's strongest players, Fergal and Ian Burns
retiring due to injuries. The halftime score read 1.08 to 0.05 which
was looking bleak for them. When Moycullen added three more points
after half time, the game was over as a contest. Nine players
contributed a further 1.10 and even when Brian Gardiner drilled home
a fine goal with nine minutes left, there was still a 10 point
deficit. Kilnadeema/leitrim tried hard but Moycullen were on top in
most area's. With Vinnie Flaherty majestic at centre back and Conor
Bohan in similar vain at centre forward and also a high intensity
display coming from midfielders McDermott and O'Donnell. Sean Burke
stood out for Kilnadeema/Leitrim being switched repeatedly and
making something happen.
