Intermediate hurling championship round three
in Ballinasloe on Saturday June 16th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.13
Ahascragh/Fohenagh 0.14
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Ahascragh/Fohenagh meet in the final round
games in group D of the Intermediate hurling championship in Duggan
Park, Ballinasloe on Saturday June 16th. The situation was very
clear with regard to what the result would mean to the group with a
victory the only result that would keep Ahascragh/Fohenagh in the
competition instead of Kilbeacanty. Kilnadeema/Leitrim, who had
already qualified for the quarter finals just wanted to keep up
their winning run. The game was a tough physical battle all through
with Ahascragh/Fohenagh finishing the game with fourteen men. The
North East Galway club opened the scoring with a point from a free
after one minute from Sean Lally. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were quickly
into their stride though and after a free taken by Tom Tierney was
miss hit, Corner Forward Alan Flaherty was on hand to score the
opening goal of the game. A Minute later captain Eamon Hyland scored
a great point from near the side line to put his side a goal
ahead. Tom Tierney then scored two points from free's on 9 and 10
minutes before Sean Lally got Ahascragh/Fohenagh second point. On 18
minutes Tom Tierney scored a lovely point from play and a minute
later Wing Forward Sean Burke also scored from play to open up a
1.05 to 0.02 lead. Sean Lally got the next two points of the game
both from free's to keep Ahascragh/Fohenagh well in the game. Tom
Tierney then added another pointed free before brother David who was
playing at Midfield scored a lovely long range point after a great
pass from Liam Geargthy. With the game still in the balance
Kilnadeema/Leitrim really killed off the show in a three minute
spell with two brilliant goals, first when Michael Flanagan struck a
great ground stroke to the net and then when Tom Tierney hit a
brilliant shot into the roof of the net. In between Kevin Lally of
Ahascragh/Fohenagh and Niall Tierney swopted points. The final
score of the half fell to the man who opened the scoring Sean Lally
with another free to leave the half time score line reading 3.08
to 0.06. With the difference been eleven points it would need
a mighty effort in the second half from Ahascragh/Fohenagh to relive
their dream. Like the first half Ahascragh/Fohenagh opened the
scoring in the second as Anthony Griffin scored a brilliant
Lineball. Then the game got really over physical with hits been
given and taken by both sides. The result at the end of all this was
the sending off of Alan Moclair for hitting down on Tom Tierney.
This was a big blow to his side. Anthony Griffin added another
point on 7 mins. to close the gap to nine. Tom Tierney opened his
sides second half account with a pointed free.
Ahascragh/Fohenagh added two more points from play from Anthony
Griffin again and Sean Lally. Alan Flaherty then scored a wonderful
point on the run on 19 minutes to leave the score reading 3.11 to
0.13. Michael Flanagan added the next point on 21 minutes. Tom
Tierney who was the games top scorer added another point from a free
on 23 mins. Michael Reynolds added the final score of the game on 25
minutes, a point from play to leave the final score line reading
3.13 0.14 in Kilnadeema/Leitrim's favour. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were
just glad to get this game out of the way and move on to bigger
things, even though they would be unhappy with their second half
performance been outscored 8pts to 5pts. For Ahascragh/Fohenagh they
were just not good enough in the end. Kilnadeema/Leitrim now take a
well earned break before coming back for a quarter final against
Mellick/Eyrecoart or Moycullen on the 23rd September.
