Bitter Disappointment as Junior team lose quarter final by one point after 220 minutes of hurling against Rahoon/Newcastle

Junior Hurling championship quarter final 2nd replay played in Athenry on Saturday September 8th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.10 Rahoon/Newcastle 0.11

The Junior B hurling championship quarter final saga which had gripped the county in recent weeks saw Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Rahoon/Newcastle meet for the third time in four week to try and sort out who would meet Abbeyknockmoy in the semi-final. As had been the case in the other two games this was a very close game with the result in doubt right up to the full time whistle. Cathal Shiel who suffered rib injuries in the previous game opened the scoring with a point from play on 4 minutes and this was followed shortly by another from Brian Costello to give his side the perfect start. We then had to wait until the 15th minutes for our next score and it was the opening score for Rahoon/Newcastle when Sean Heffernan scored a point from a free to close the gap before Kevin Molloy added a pointed  free for Kilnadeema/Leitrim shortly afterwards to leave the score reading 0.03 to 0.01 after 16 mins. Rahoon/Newcastle know they were now in a match yet again and decided to wake up with four points in a five minute period to take the lead for the first time. Sean Heffernan scored the first before Bob O'Connor scored from play on 20 minutes. Raymond Conneely who was equally effective in the drawn games soon added two more points both from play. The scoring spree continued for the city side two mins later when their centre half back stole up to add a point from play to leave his side ahead 0.06 to 0.03. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were stung into action soon afterwards when Kevin Molloy showed leadership with two points, one from play to close the gap to one point and this changed again on 32 mins when Brian Costello brought the game all level with another point from play to leave it all level at the break 6pts each. Rahoon/Newcastle were fast out of the blocks in the second half and added two points very quickly through Bob O'Connor and Raymond Conneely on 2 and 3 minutes. Kevin Molloy from a free and Brian Costello soon had the game all level again and we wondered would these team ever be separated. We had to wait until 20 minutes for the next score when Sean Heffernan put Rahoon/Newcastle back in front with a point from play before he scored a wonderful Line ball four minutes later to open up a two point gap. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were defending brilliantly at this stage but were making very little progress up front and soon their was three point between the sides as a Rahoon/Newcastle substitute scored from play. Kevin Molloy tried so hard to keep the dream alive for this side and he soon scored a point from play on 30 minutes before he added another point from a free a minute later to close the gap to just one point. Kevin with a overhead pull which flashed just wide and a Raymond Larkin shot at goal from a difficult angle was as near as Kilnadeema/Leitrim came to that crucial equaliser and so Rahoon/Newcastle had prevailed by the narrowest of margins over 220 minutes of championship hurling as the dream died for Kilnadeema/Leitrim. They will be very disappointed as they never reached their potential in any of the three games
