Quarter final defeat for Minor's

Old rivals Cappatagle prove too strong again

Minor hurling championship Quarter final played in Killimor on Sunday September 30th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.06  Cappatagle 3.09

The last weekend in September 2007 will not be looked back on with many fond memories by Kilnadeema/Leitrim hurling club as they lost two quarter final's within 24 hours and both played in Killimor. With the Intermediate team losing on the Saturday it was the turn of the very promising minor side to take to the field on the Sunday morning when they took on great old rivals Cappatagle in the minor B quarter final with the winners progressing to meet either Carnmore or Portumna in the semi-finals. Kilnadeema/Leitrim started very well and were a point up after two minutes when Dara Herlihy shot a point from a free and he doubled the lead a few minutes later with another free. Alan Dolan opened Cappatagle's account on 7 mins also with a free before Mark Loughnane shot the first goal of the gale a minute later to open up a two point lead for his side 1.01 to 0.02. Then we had two points from football star Emmet Malone for Cappatagle to put four points  between the sides. Gary Curley, who was Kilnadeema/Leitrim's main scoring stars all year then shot a point from play on 17 minutes and very little separated the sides at this stage. County minor star Alan Dolan, who is also under age next year had a major influience on the game and he he soon shot two further points, the first from a free and the second from a line ball to stretch Cappatagle's lead. Tom Barrett reduced the gap on 24 minutes with a point from play as Kilnadeema/Leitrim tried to stay in touch. Ronan Garvey made life even harder for them when he shot Cappatagle's second goal a minute later and now Kilnadeema/Leitrim were in a real battle. Two further points followed in the first half with Alan Dolan scoring his fourth point from a free and Dara Herlihy shooting a point from play on 30 mins. to leave the half time score reading 2.06 to 0.05. Kilnadeema/Leitrim knew they had a lot to do against a team who had got the better of there many times in the post at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 levels and they certainly went about getting right back into the game straight from the restart when Tom Barrett crashed home his sides first goal and reduced the lead to a more manageable four points. Luck didn't shine on Kilnadeema/Leitrim long though when after a blatant trip on Full back Ruairi Costello, first half goal scorer Ronan Garvey got in for his second and Cappatagle's third goal to open up a seven point lead again 3.06 to 1.05. From here on it was all one way traffic as Alan Dolan shot three points in a row between the 12th  and the 17th minute, two from free's and one from a 65. With their team ten points down Kilnadeema/Leitrim finished the stronger and added a goal and a point before the finish, first when Dara Herlihy shot a free on 20 mins and then five minutes from the end when Colm Kelly shot his sides second goal to reduce  the lead to six. It was all too little too late as Cappatagle saw out the rest of game to win comfortably enough with the final score line reading 3.09 to 2.06. Kilnadeema/Leitrim will be very disappointed as they looked a very promising team early on in the year especially when they defeated Ardrahan in a brilliant performance. What was obvious later in the year was that the group might not have been that strong as all three teams that qualified failed to make the semi-finals. Hopefully a few of these players will progress to senior in the future.
