Intermediate team lose top of the table clash with Rahoon/Newcastle
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.04 Rahoon/Newcastle 2.08
Kilnadeema/Leitrim and
Rahoon/Newcastle
clashed in a top
of the table Intermediate game in Athenry on
Sunday June 8th. With Kilnadeema/leitrim
unbeaten and Rahoon/Newcastle with one defeat
going into this game it was hoped for a classic
between two sides with title ambitions. This was
never a classic though with low scoring the
order of the day. Kilnadeema/Leitrim opened the
scoring very early when Eamon Hyland pointed.
Tom Tierney soon doubled the lead with a pointed
the lead with a pointed free. Goals were
plentiful in this game and the first arrived on
four minutes for the city side when Full Forward
Brian Cloherty scored to put his side into a
early lead. Tom Tierney soon had it level again
with another pointed free. We had to wait
thirteen minutes for the next score and it was a
significant one when Tom Tierney goaled for
Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Niall Carr with a free got
Rahoon/Newcastle only their second score on 22
minutes before Brian Cloherty got in on the act
again soon after with his second goal to put his
team back in front 2.01 to 1.03. Niall Carr then
pointed a 21 mtr free and hid midfield partner
Emmett Heffernan added a point from play in
injury time before Dermot Tarpey had the final
score of the half soon after to leave the score
at the break 2.04 to 1.03 in the city sides
favour. While the first half was interesting it
was hoped for better fair in the second. Niall
Carr with his third point opened the scoring
early in the second half before David Tierney
pointed a free on 7 mins. Like the first half
the scoring ratio did not improve and we had to
wait until the 16th minute od the second half
for our next score when David Tierney lashed on
a loose ball to rattle the net and put
Kilnadeema/Leitrim back in the game, only one
point behind. Martin Kelly then shot a point for
Rahoon/Newcastle from play on 18 mins and he
scored again nine minutes later, again from play
to put his side ahead by three. We then had a
dramatic last few minutes when first county star
David Tierney shot his second goal with two
minutes to play. Just when it seemed like
Kilnadeema/Leitrim might get something out of
the game Enda Feeney seeped up to shot the
winning point for Rahoon/Newcastle from play to
end a dramatic if poor game on a final
score line of 2.08 to 3.04.
