An Spiddal prove no match for Minor's in opening championship game

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.18 An Spiddal 0.05

The Minor hurlers of Kilnadeema/Leitrim finally got their so far frustrating  championship season under way on Wednesday May 7th in Ballyloughane when they took on Connemara side An Spiddal. Having already had two games postponed for different reasons it was great to finally get a game for this team. It was a game that they were never really troubled as An Spiddal put up a very poor challenge. Full Forward Gary Curley had already hit them hard after only two minutes when he scored a goal and a point from play. Colm Kelly, who was very impressive all through at wing forward then shot two points from play before Gary Winters added another by the seventh minute  to leave it 1.04 to no score at this early stage. Thomas Flaherty, who was An Spiddal's best player opened his sides account with a free a minute later before Dara Herlihy scored his first point. Aiden Monaghan who lead the line very well at centre forward scored the first of his two goals after 14 minutes before Alvin Mitchell added another point from play. Thomas Flaherty then pointed An Spiddal's second point of the half, again from a free. Dara Herlihy and Gary Curley both from play then widened the gap further before Flaherty added another point from a free. The game was really over at half time when Kilnadeema/Leitrim added two more goals from Colm Kelly and Aiden Monaghan again to leave the score at the break 4.08 to 0.03. An Spiddal were very short on numbers and had to play a very young player just to make the 15 after the break. Colm Kelly with his fourth point quickly added to the scoreboard on the resumption. Padraig Stapleton and Dara Herlihy then added pointed free's before Dara again and Alvin Mitchell added two more points from play. Colm Kelly then added his fifth point as Kilnadeema/Leitrim started to add on the substitutes. Seamus Thornton finally got An Spiddal's only point from play after 12 mins before Dara Herlihy scored another from play. Padraig Stapleton and Thomas Flaherty then exchanged points from free's. Substitute Daithi O'Donoghue then got in on the act with a point before a late point followed from Mark Kelly to finally bring this very one-sided game to a finish. The final score line reading 4.18 to 0.05. What will be disappointing is that this team don't play again until the end of June, a very long break.
