Killimor prove tough nut to crack in free ridden game

Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.12 Killimor 0.12

Two sides coming off impressive victories in round two of the Finnerty Plant Hire Intermediate hurling championship Killimor and Kilnadeema/leitrim meet in a vital game in Ballinasloe on Saturday May 17th. With the outcome been a draw in the end of a game which was riddled with free's all through. Killimor needed the win maybe a bit more than their opponents having only secured two points so far in the group and this was evident all through. Kilnadeema/Leitrim relied on brilliant accuracy of Tom Tierney as usual for scores (he scored eleven points in all). Tom opened the scoring in the first minute with a pointed free and repeated it two minutes later. Killimor free taker Ger Lyons also got plenty of practice during the game and he had them level by the eighth minute with two pointed free's. The first score from play arrived in the 10th minute when Tom Tierney shot over for Kilnadeema/Leitrim to restore their lead. He then added his fourth point from a free before brother David added another point at the midway stage in the first half to open up a three point gap 0.05 to 0.02. Shane McClearn, still going strong at full forward for Killimor soon opened his account with a point from play. Free's can win games as well as lose them and Killimor's Ger Lyons put more pressure on Kilnadeema/Leitrim in the next few minutes as he pointed three placed balls. Tom Tierney levelled up the game again with a point from play after 29 minutes before Killimor finished the half stronger with two more points, first another Ger Lyons free and then a long range effort from County man Andrew Keary which was tipped over the bar by Mark Herlihy to close out the first half on a score line of 0.08 to 0.06 in Killimor's favour. In what was a close game all through Kilnadeema/Leitrim were soon back level again with two more Tom Tierney free's inside two minutes. Ger Lyons replied for Killimor straight away with two more pointed free's to put his side back in front by two. Killimor substitute Robert Mitchell then put over another point from play on 39 mins to open up a three point lead. Tom Tierney kept Kilnadeema/Leitrim ticking along with another pointed free after 44 mins. With the game there for the taking at this stage Killimor responded very well to the challenge again on 49 mins with Shane McClernan's second point from play to restore the lead to three. Killimor were looking like winners at this stage but amazingly they didn't score again as Kilnadeema/Leitrim hanging in there and putting them under severe pressure which resulted in three free's been awarded which Tom Tierney duely pointed to tie up the game right on full time on a final score of 0.12 each. While this was a valuable point to both sides and puts Kilnadeema/Leitrim on top of the table, they will be far from happy with the performance especially after the way they played the previous week against Killimordaly. They will now look forward to the Rahoon/Newcastle game.
