Padraig Pearses prove much too strong

Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 21
team kicked into action with a first round
championship game on Easter Monday against
Padraig Pearses in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe.
This was a repeat of the 2007 quarter final
which Kilnadeema/leitrim won in extra time.
Padraig Pearses still have 13 of that team
available to them which was to make a very
difficult game. In fairness to
Kilnadeema/Leitrim they gave as good as they got
in the first half with Eoin O'Toole in
particular very accurate especially from free
taking, but Padraig Pearses had their own
sharpshooter in corner forward Emmet Ward who
shot 13 points in all over the hour. Eoin
O'Toole with a pointed free and a point from
play from Eoin Larkin had Kilnadeema/Leitrim two
in front early on before Damien Whynne and Emmet
Ward soon levelled matters. Then we saw two good
points from play from Eoin Larkin and Ward to
leave it still level after eight minutes. Emmet
Ward and Eoin O'Toole then swopted points, both
from free's before Pearses took a two point lead
through Thomas Flannery and Ward again with
another pointed free on 15 minutes. Then we had
Eoin O'Toole take over as he shot four points to
one Emmet Ward effort to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim
ahead again 0.09 to 0.08 after 29 minutes. Emmet
Ward was not to be outdone though and soon shot
two more points, the second from play. Paul
Howard was then called on to make a great save
and the half finished with points been swopted
from Emmet Ward and a might effort from Padraig
Stapleton from over 100 yards to leave the north
Galway side leading 0.10 to 0.09 at the break.
The second half sadly did not turn out to be as
exciting or as close as Perses showed their
class to move clear with ease. They got the
perfect start to the half with a goal after only
one minute through county star Jimmy Glisten.
Emmet Ward with two points from play and another
from a free soon had them seven points clear
after eight minutes. Thomas Flannery then shot a
point from play to leave it 1.14 to 0.09 a
minute later. Two more Ward points followed
before Eoin O'Toole shot Kilnadeema/Leitrim's
only point of the second half, this time from a
penalty. After Paul Howard made another great
save further points followed from Jimmy Glisten,
Richie Lally and Thomas Flannery to see the game
out on a final score line of 1.19 to 0.10. While
it was a disappointing result for this very
young team, there was still enough good signs
for the future and the next game which will be
against Kilbeacanty next week.
