Under 21 team bow out to Kilbeacanty in second round
|
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 0.07 Kilbeacanty 0.13Kilnadeema/Leitrim’s involvement in the Under 21 championship for 2008 came to an end on Saturday evening last April 5th when they were comprehensively defeated by Kilbeacanty whom they had two games with in the 2007 championship with Kilnadeema/Leitrim progressing on that occasion. With both clubs having lost their first game against Padraig Pearses and Portumna, this was a winner take all situation. The game was played in Castledaly on a very cold, breezy evening. Kilbeacanty lead by four at half time 0.07 to 0.04 after playing with the elements. Stephen Lambert, county minor last year opened the scoring after one minute with a point from play and was to contribute seven more over the hour. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were over reliant on Eoin O’Toole and he scored all but one of his side’s scores. Noel Glynn with two point from play and one from Brendan Burke added to Stephen Lambert’s scores in this half as all of Kilnadeema/Leitrim’s scores came from O’Toole, with two from play. Kilbeacanty with three county players on view in Lambert, Niall Donoghue and Noel Glynn came out even stronger in the second half and dominated all through. Stephen Lambert with two from play and one from a lineball plus a point from play from Paul Casey were added to by two free’s from Lambert and one from Noel Glynn to two free’s from Eoin O’Toole and one from Padraig Stapleton to leave the south Galway side winners in the end by seven points 0.13 to 0.07. While it was disappointing to lose out this time, it was probably for the best for this very young Kilnadeema/Leitrim team with over half still minors. Kilbeacanty now progress to a preliminary quarterfinal with some hope of further progress. Scorers: Eoin O’Toole 0.06, Padraig Stapleton. Team line out: Paul Howard, Kevin Kelly, Cathal Farrell, Shane Curley, Mark Kelly, Gearoid Whelan, Padraig Stapleton, Aiden Monaghan, Brian Gardiner, Eoin Larkin, Colm Kelly, Shane O’Looney, Ruairi Costello, Eoin O’Toole, Gary Curley. Sub used: Gary Winters. Damien Donoghue.
