Quarter final defeat to Kilconieron in Under 14 Feile by minimum margin Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.02 Kilconieron 0.06
The eagerly awaited clash of
neighbours Kilnadeema/leitrim and Kilconieron
in the Under 14 Feile na nGeal quarter final
took place in Craughwell on Monday April 28th,
and with April been one of the wettest months in
living memory, it was no surprise that there was
a downpour throughout the game making the pitch
soft and muddy. The game only really came to
life in the second half as scores were hard to
to find in the first half. Kilconieron created
the first real chance when Cormac Dillon raced
clear and looked certain to score until Fergal
Broderick somehow got in a block to save a
certain goal. The first score of the game did
not arrive until the 10th minute when Padraig
Flanagan pointed a free from out near the
sideline to put Kilconieron one up. He repeated
the feat on 16 minutes with another pointed
free. Kilnadeema/Leitrim then had a goal
disallowed from Cillian Dowling for a square
ball infringement, before Cillian made amends
with a brilliant point from play right on half
time for his side's only score of the half. The
scoreboard reading 0.01 to 0.02. Kilconieron
were quickly off the mark at the start of the
second half when Shane Caulfield shot a point
from a long range free and followed this up with
a point from play soon after. Kilnadeema/Leitrim
then introduced Liam Kelly and he soon shot a
point from play after 3 minutes. Play was now
hectic with Kilnadeema/Leitrim camped in the
Kilconieron half. Next we saw another goal
disallowed when Cillian Dowling was adjudged to
have travelled too far with the ball. Soon after
Eoin Morrissey was found all alone in front of
the goals and he made no mistake as he blasted
home a goal to put his side ahead for the first
and only time in the game with 10 minutes gone.
Kilconieron soon levelled up the game again when
Luke Uniacke scored from play.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim then had a third goal
disallowed when Brian Molloy scored, put was
pulled back for a 21 yard free instead. Brian
took the free himself but sadly miss hit it and
the ball was saved. A point at this stage would
probably have done as Kilconieron were under
pressure. Straight from this save Kilconieron
went down the field and won a free in which
Padraig Flanagan duely pointed. It was ironic
that he should get the winner as his father Pat
is originally from Leitrim parish. The game
ended after a few more minutes of play on a
final score line of 0.06 to
1.02.Kilnadeema/leitrim will be bitterly
disappointed with this result and that they
didn't progress to a semi final. They will still
take great pride in what this team has achieved
in 2008 reaching a Feile quarter final for the
first time ever and were only a puck of a ball
away from a top for finish. The luck just with
then on this particular evening.
