Kilnadeema/Leitrim get revenge on Sarsfields for 2006 quarter-final defeat

Under 14 championship Round two in Bullaun on Monday April 2nd
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.07   Sarsfields 0.02

Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 14 team have the perfect start to their championship competition with their second victory coming against Sarsfields in Bullaun on Monday April 2nd. Kilnadeema/Leitrim who had made the perfect start with victory over Ballindeeren the previous week had expected Sarsfields to be a tough team to defeat especially as they had drawn with them in Under 12 two years previously, and also had lost in the quarter final last year  to the Bullaun/New Inn combination.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim had to face a very strong wind in the first half but made the perfect start with a goal by Shane Lawless after 4 minutes. Lewis Mitchell soon added a point before Brian Molloy struck for a second goal on 7 minutes to put Kilnadeema/Leitrim 7 points in front. Brian Molloy added another point on 15 minutes to leave his side ahead by 2-2 to 0-2 at half time. With the breeze to come in the second half Kilnadeema/Leitrim were hopeful of getting even more scores. Cillian Dowling and Brian Molloy soon added to the score with a point each before Stephen Bruton goaled on 7 minutes to finally put an end to Sarsfields challenge. Further points were added by Brian Molloy, Cillian Dowling and Stephen Bruton to leave the final score Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3-07 Sarsfields 0.02.  This was a very good team display  by Kilnadeema/Leitrim with many fine performances, but in Colin Moran they had a real star at wing back.

Scorers: Brian Molloy 1.03, Stephen Bruton 1.01, Shane Lawless 1.00, Cillian Dowling 0.02, Lewis Dowling 0.01.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim take eye off ball in poor performance against Kinvara

Under 14 championship round three in Kinvara on Thursday April 5th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.04   Kinvara 0.02

Kilnadeema/Leitrim took on Kinvara in their third game in the Under 14 championship on Thursday April 5th in Kinvara. Kinvara who had suffered two bad defeats in the opening games were expected to prove very little trouble for group leaders Kilnadeema/Leitrim, but it certainly didn't turn out that way as Kinvara showed much improvement to really put it up to a off colour East Galway  side and the first half score line certainly proved how poor they were with the score reading one point each, a Conor O'Brien free. After a big gee up at halftime the team played much better in the second half to run out easy winners in the end. Three goals were scored in that second half from Stephen Bruton, Ryan Murray and a brilliant goal from Cillian Dowling. The final score being 3-04 to 0-02. Certainly the performance will have to be much better before they play Killimordaly in 10 days time.

Scorers: Cillian Dowling 1.00, Ryan Murray 1.00, Stephen Bruton 1.00, Conor O'Brien 0.02, Shane lawless 0.01, Brian Molloy 0.01.

Title favourites Killimordaly just get the better of Kilnadeema/Leitrim in great game

Under14 championship round four in Leitrim on Monday April 16th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.04  Killimordaly 1.10

Kilnadeema/Leitrim had their first real challenge of the Under 14 championship when they took on high flying Killimordaly in Leitrim on Monday April 16th. Killimordaly had like Kilnadeema/Leitrim won their first three games with big winning margins , and Killimordaly had been running up a lot of points in each game so this was Kilnadeema/Leitrim's first challenge to stop them scoring such big amounts. The game was played at a very high tempo all through with some great displays on both sides. Shane Lawless opened the scoring after one minute with  a great point, and after Killimordaly equalised soon after Brian Molloy restored the lead for his side from a free. Shane Lawless soon added another point which was quickly replayed to by Killimordaly before Brian Molloy crashed home a great goal on 14 minutes to put the home side ahead 1-03 to 0-02. Killimordaly soon added three points before on the stroke of half time Ryan Murray scored another goal for Kilnadeema/Leitrim to leave his side in a very strong position at half time leading by 4 points after playing into the breeze.
The second half did not go according to plan though as Killimordaly took over and scored 1-04 without replay to lead by three points before Brian Molloy from a free scored Kilnadeema/Leitrim's only score in the second half as luck went against them and three goal bound shots were cleared off the line to leave the final score 1.10 to 2.04.  This was a great challenge for the team and no doubt they could meet again later in the competition.
Scorers: Brian Molloy 1.02, Ryan Murray 1.00, Shane lawless 0.02.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim back on track with wonderful second half display against Killimor

Under 14 championship round five played in Killimor on Monday April 23rd
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.06  Killimor 0.02

Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 14 team recorded a hard earned victory over a good Killimor team in the championship in Killimor on Monday April 23rd. After the team losing out narrowly last week to Killimordaly it was very important to bounce back with a victory in this game as both sides were in contention to join Killimordaly in the quarter finals. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had the breeze in the first half and found it very hard to break down a strong Killimor defence but the breakthrough came first with a Brian Molloy goal after 2 minutes. The team then went 13 more minutes without a score before Colin Moran struck a good point and Shane lawless added another before half time to put his side ahead by 1-02 to 0-01 at the break. Not a very big lead and this we thought might put the team under pressure in the second half but Kilnadeema/Leitrim had other idea's and gave a wonderful display in that half to out score Killimor by 0.04 to 0.01. Points from Brian Molloy, Shane lawless, Stephen Bruton and Shane lawless again wrapped up the game. This was  a great performance and gives great hope for the future.

Scorers: Brian Molloy 1.01, Shane Lawless 0.02, Colin Moran 0.01, Stephen Bruton 0.01.
Team Lineout:  Dara Donoghue, Ian Kennedy, Conal Whelan, Stephen Farrell, Dara Curley,  Conor Cunningham, Conor Howard, Colin Moran, Conor O'Brian,  Lewis Mitchell, Niall Haverty,  Cillian Dowling, Tommy Mottrom, , Shane Lawless, Brian Molloy.

Injury's and lack of interest cost Kilnadeema/Leitrim in final group game

Under 14 championship round six played in Kilconieron on Monday April 29th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.01  St Thomas 2.06

Kilnadeema/Leitrim under 14's finished out their group programme on Monday April 29th against St Thomas in Kilconieron knowing that they had already qualified for the knockout stages of the championship. The team were forced to lineout without two of their best players Shane Lawless and Conor Cunningham due to illness which was  a big blow. A Few new players were introduced to the team to see if they could make a claim for a quarter final place. Kilnadeema/Leitrim never got to the pace of the game in the first half as St Thomas who incidentally had nothing to play for only pride were on top  all over the field  but did not reflect this on the scoreboard only leading 3 pts to 1 at half time. Brian Molloy got Kilnadeema/Leitrim's only point from a free. St Thomas started the second half even stronger and added a goal and a point very soon before Kilnadeema/Leitrim sprung to life with a great two goal burst both scored by the captain on the day Stephen Bruton to leave the sides level on 12 minutes. Conor O'Brien then had another goal bound shot brilliantly saved before St Thomas's resumed control to run out winners in the end by five points. This was a disappointing performance overall from Kilnadeema/Leitrim but better coming now than later in the competition.
Scorers: Stephen Bruton 2.00, Brian Molloy 0.01.
Team Lineout:
Dara Donoghue, Ian Kennedy,  Stephen Farrell, Conor Howard, Dara Curley,  Conal Whelan, Conor Flynn, Colin Moran, Conor O'Brian,  Brian Harris, Niall Haverty,  Cillian Dowling, Ciaran Callagy , Stephen Bruton, Brian Molloy.

Under 14 Quarter-final
Kilnadeema/Leitrim see off Gort with great performance in Quarter-final

Under 14 championship Quarter Final played in Castledaly on Monday May 14th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 3.03  Gort 1.07

Kilnadeema/Leitrim and Gort clashed in the quarter final of the Under 14 championship at wet and windy Castledaly on Monday may 14th. Having both finished second in their groups and having had many close battles in recent years at Under 12 and Under 14, this was always going to be a close fought game and so it turned out to be as scores proved very hard to get in both half's. Kilnadeema/Leitrim knew their biggest problem was to keep tabs on the brilliant Gort centre half forward Gerry Donoghue and this proved to be the story right throughout the game. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had wind advantage first and made a very slow start particularly on the score board where a lot of chances were created but very few converted. Shane lawless opened the scoring after only one minute with a brilliant point after a great run up the sideline. It took  nine minutes for another score to come and this time it was worth waiting for as Shane Lawless, who was tormenting Gort right through out broke away from his marker again and hit off on another great solo run before hitting a great low past the goalie into the net to open up a four point lead. Gort were now beginning to get more possession up the field and they opened their account with a Gerry Donoghue point from play on 12 minutes. He added another two from free's on 19 and 20 minutes to close the gap to just  a point 1.01 to 0.03. Shane lawless though had the last say on the score board when he pointed on 21 minutes to leave just two points between the sides at the break. We wondered would it be enough.
Kilnadeema/Leitrim soon found out what a battle they had on their hands as Gerry Donoghue showed his class on 2 minutes with a excellent goal to put his side ahead for the first time. Kilnadeema/Leitrim soon responded though with  a goal of their own when a lucky stroke by Cillian Dowling found it's way to the net to restore the two point lead. Gerry Donoghue who was proving a hand full for his marker was fouled on two occasions and duly pointed both to leave the game level on 7 minutes 2.02 to 1.05. A Minute later Kilnadeema/Leitrim struck for another goal when Substitute Ryan Murray got at the end of  a cross to put the ball away to leave his side ahead by 3.02 to 1.05. Gerry Donoghue soon replied again with another pointed free before centre half back Conor Cunningham replied with a free of his own for Kilnadeema/Leitrim to still leave a goal between the sides with 8 minutes to go. 3 minutes later Gerry Donoghue scored another free to bring it back to just two again and with five minutes left their was loads of time for Gort to score again, but Kilnadeema/Leitrim to  a man defended super to cut out all their chances and in Dara Donoghue they had a match winning goalie. Their was scenes of joy at the end as they qualified for the semi-final and a tilt with Cappatagle.

Scorers: Shane Lawless 1.02, Cillian Dowling 1.00, Ryan Murray 1.00, Conor Cunningham 0.01.

Under 14 Semi-Final

Dowling' the hero as Kilnadeema/Leitrim see off Cappatagle in semi-final

Under 14 championship semi-final played in Ballinasloe on Monday May 21st
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.05   Cappatagle  0.05

Winners of Under 14 medals are very scarce in Kilnadeema/Leitrim hurling club as the one and only title came to Kilnadeema all of 24 years ago which made the 2007 Under 14 semi-final all the more important against Cappatagle in Ballinasloe on Monday May 21st. With Killimor having already qualified for the final in the first game this made the Kilnadeema/Leitrim lads all the more determined having already defeated Killimor in the group. Cappatagle who had topped their group were considered very handy and would take a good performance to defeat them. Shane Lawless first  broke through the Cappatagle defence to strike a great goal on 4 minutes. Their was no more scores for 10 minutes but their certainly was plenty of chances created by both sides with Dara Donoghue saving brilliantly in goal for Kilnadeema/Leitrim on more than one occasion to stop Cappatagle scoring the goal they so badly wanted. Then after some near misses before hand Kilnadeema/Leitrim full Forward Stephen Bruton scored a lovely goal after winning a loose ball in the Cappatagle square and crashing the ball to the net to put his side two goals ahead after 14 minutes. A Minute later Cappatagle finally got on the scoreboard with  a point from play. Cillian Dowling who had a super game added a point for Kilnadeema/Leitrim a minute later. Cappatagle got another point on 19 minutes from their Corner Forward. Kilnadeema/Leitrim continued to dominate and Midfielder Conor O'Brien soon put his side two goals up again with a long range point. Finally on the stroke of half time Cappatagle got another point to leave the half time score reading 2.02 to 0.03. Cappatagle may have been down at half time but certainly came out very determined for the second half and they upped the tempo big time for a good while and opened the second half scoring with a free on 3 minutes. Cillian Dowling who was now enjoying a lot of space got another point for Kilnadeema/Leitrim on 7 minutes. Cappatagle stayed in touch with another free on 9 minutes to still leave four points between the sides. Kilnadeema/Leitrim finally got the vital breakthrough in the second half when Cillian Dowling was again on target only this time he scored a brilliant goal to leave his side ahead 3.03 to 0.05 after 12 minutes. He was on hand again three minutes later to score another point. The second half was certainly turning into the Cillian Dowling show as he continued to find a lot of space up front and he added another point on 18 mins to leave nine points between the sides. Cillian was not finished though as he got through for another goal to finally put an end to Cappatagle and guide his side into the County final and a rematch with Killimor on a final score line of 4.05 to 0.05. Kilnadeema/Leitrim certainly have made wonderful progress in this championship and they're in a good state of health to finally bring home a Under 14 title to Kilnadeema/Leitrim.

Scorers: Cillian Dowling 2.04, Stephen Lawless 1.00, Stephen Bruton 1.00, Conor O'Brien 0.01.

Kilnadeema/Leitrim on top of the world

Under 14 B Championship final played in Loughrea on Saturday May 26th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 5.05  Killimor 1.02

County final day is a day most Clubs dream about, but very few get to enjoy at any grade and in Under 14 Kilnadeema/Leitrim have certainly been put through the ringer a few times with no success to show for all of 24 years when Kilnadeema won their only title against Liam Mellows, while Leitrim have no Under 14 title to show on their Roll of Honour, and so to 2007 and the chance to finally put this right arrived in Loughrea on Saturday May 26th against East Galway rivals Killimor (Both teams had qualified out of the same group with Kilnadeema/Leitrim winning their clash by 5pts). A Hugh crowd had gathered to support both sides while their was also a big following for the Feile teams playing before hand. Killimor won the toss and opted to play against the breeze ( probably the wrong decision in hindsight) with both teams hoping for a good start and after Killimor Goalkeeper Conor Mullins saved a goal bound shot, corner forward Brian Molloy was on hand to crash home a great goal and give his side a dream start. Brian Molloy who is still Under 12 was to have  a brilliant game right through and a minute later he won a free which he duly pointed himself. Action was intense at this stage both sides fighting to gain possession and Killimor giving as good as they got. 8 minutes after his last score Brian Molloy was on hand again to point another free after Lewis Mitchell was fouled to put his side 1-02 to no score ahead. Brian's corner forward team mate Cillian Dowling who was the star of the semi final win over Cappatagle added a point from play on 12 minutes as Killimor did their best to keep the score line down. Right on the stroke of half time Shane Lawless the Kilnadeema/Leitrim captain was on hand after  a good solo run to slot over another point to close the first half scoring at 1-04 to 0-00.
While Killimor would be disappointed not to have scored in the first half, they had to be happy enough at been only 7 points down and having the breeze in the second half. We thought at this stage that we were in for a close second half. Killimor moved their star midfielder Gary Keane to full forward at the start of the second half in a hope of getting some early scores, but Kilnadeema/Leitrim moved an extra man back to cover the danger which Colin Moran did very well. If Kilnadeema/Leitrim had a great start to the first half then they equally got a great start to the second half when Shane lawless scored one of the goals of the year to put his side further ahead. Conor O'Brien, who started the game feeling sick soon added another point from 40 yards to put eleven points between the sides. The first score for Killimor finally arrived on 5 minutes when James McEvoy got in for a simple goal to give his side some hope. Any hope they had soon vanished though when the ball worked it's way down to the corner forward position where Brian Molloy took on and beat his man before scoring a quiet superb goal to make the score 3-05 to 1 goal after 6 minutes. Any chance Killimor had of making a comeback was ended on 9 minutes when full forward Stephen Bruton broke through to goal again and put his side 14 points ahead and looking at one hand on the Cup. Both Killimor Captain Edmund McDonagh and Gary Keane kept driving forward in the hope of getting of getting a few goals back, their only reward though were two points on 15 and 16 minutes, one from each player. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had no symphony for them and finally finished them off  with another goal on 21 minutes again from Stephen Bruton to leave the  score reading 5-05 to 1-02. Referee Paddy Poland shortly afterwards blew the final whistle to leave Kilnadeema/Leitrim Under 14 B champions for the first time ever and their was wonderful celebrations to be seen all over the pitch by players and supporters alike. This was a special and wonderful victory for a brilliant team and management which was lead by Mark Herlihy with great help from Ferdie Whelan, Joe Keane and Noel Callagy. Gary Keane was presented with man of the match award even though Brian Molloy among others had an equal claim to the award. Then we had the very special moment everyone was waiting for when Chairman Tom Connor presented the Under 14 trophy to Shane Lawless. A Wonderful tour of Kilnadeema/Leitrim Parish's followed as bonfires were seen everywhere. Kilnadeema/Leitrim had some fine performances right through out the team from Dara Donoghue in goal to Corner forward Brian Molloy. This is certainly a team for the future.
