Revenge for Under 21 team in opening round of Championship
Under-21 B Championship Round One played in Castledaly on Saturday March 24th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.10  Beagh 1.10
On the first weekend of Championship hurling in Galway Kilnadeema/Leitrim got off to a great start with victories in both the Under 14 and Under 21 championships. First up were the Under 21 who were drawn to meet Beagh in the first round in Castledaly on Saturday March 24th. This was a repeat of last year's semi-final, a game Kilnadeema/Leitrim left behind them in Loughrea. With a lot of the same players on view it was always going to be a close battle and so it turned out to be as Kilnadeema/Leitrim lead by just two points at half time 1-05 to 0-06.The goal coming from Ruairi Costello. In the second half Kilnadeema/Leitrim were much better and went six points clear before Beagh got a goal late on. Michael McLoughlin scored the second goal for his side. Patrick Deely gave a man of the match performance.

Under 21 team survive to fight another day

Under 21 Championship Pre-Quarter Final played in Loughrea on Sunday June 24th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.10   Kilbeacanty 1.10

The Under 21 Championship at the best of times is a tough physical competition played between very fit and quality hurlers, but the problem facing Kilnadeema/Leitrim in their Pre-Quarter final against Kilbeacanty was that three of their best players could not line out for various reasons. Michael Hedderman (The team captain) has a long term injury, Fergal Nevin who went to America for the Summer but returned only to be stopped playing because of the 60 day rule, and Padraig McLoughlin who was on Holidays. The game was played in Loughrea on Sunday June 24th in a continual downpour. With the clubs having already meet in the Minor and Intermediate Championships, their was always going to be a bit of rivalry built up for this game. Shane O'Looney continued his recent good form when he opened the scoring on 3 minutes with a point from play. Free taking was the big downfall last year when the team lost in the semi-final to Beagh by one point but this time Sean Burke had no such problems as he put them over from all angles and distances. He scored his first on 4 minutes from a 65 before Pat Regan got Kilbeacanty off the mark on 9 mins with  a point from play. Alan McCarthy, who was to be Kilbeacanty's best forward all through then equalised with a point from play on 10 mins after been set up by Stephen Lambert. Sean Burke, who played the game with a troublesome shoulder injury then took over the show as first he scored two points from free's on 13 and 15 minutes both from midfield. Then on 16 mins he struck a long ball into the Kilbeacanty square which somehow cleared everybody and ended up in the net after the good work done first by Ruairi Costello in setting up Sean for the shot. This brought the score to 1.04 to 0.02. Alan McCarthy then pointed from play on 23 mins after the build-up involved an injury to Ruairi Costello. Then Kilnadeema/Leitrim's second Midfielder Brian Gardiner scored a lovely point on the run to close out the first half with the scoreboard reading 1.05 to 0.03. Niall Shaughnessy replaced Michael McLoughlin at the start of the second half as Sean Burke opened the scoring with another free and Keith Reilly replayed for the South Galway side with  a point from play one minute later. The game changed totally 2 minutes alter when Alan Fahy got on the end of a long Noel Glynn free to shoot past Mark Herlihy and close the gap to 2 points. Sean Burke then added another free which was replayed to immediately by Noel Glynn who shot a great point from play. Steven Lambert brought it even closer with another point from a free on 10 mins before Gearoid Whelan scored the point of the game when he shot over from 70yards out near the sideline to really lift the Kilnadeema/Leitrim. Two quick points from Alan McCarthy and Noel Glynn had the game all tied up by the 18th minute at 1.08  apiece. Colm Kelly now replaced Niall Shaughnessy as the game was now there for the taking by both teams. Alan McCarthy from play and a Noel Glynn pointed free from 80 yards had Kilbeacanty 2 ahead for the first time as the clock ticked near the finish. Kilnadeema/Leitrim were not giving up though without  a fight as first Sean burke pointed a free on 31 mins and then when all seemed lost up stepped Brian Gardiner to score a wonderful point from play in front of the dugout and surrounded by 3 players to save his team from defeat and give them a chance to fight another day on a final score line of 1.10 each. This was an enjoyable game played in very poor condititions and will be worth seeing again in the replay.

Under 21 hurling championship Preliminary Quar final replay played in Loughrea on Saturday Oct 12th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 2.09  Kilbeacanty  0.11

A majestic display of centre half back play from Liam Geargthy, wonderful accuracy from Sean Burke, a brilliant save from Mark Herlihy in the second half when it was most needed and the addition of an extra point in the first half from referee Mike Conway which was never scored were some of the highlights of Kilnadeema/Leitrim's preliminary quarter final championship replay against Kilbeacanty when the competition resumed after a four month break from the drawn game when the sides meet in Loughrea on Saturday October 13th. Kilnadeema/Leitrim coming off the disappointment of an Intermediate and Minor quarter final defeats just two weeks previous were now fully focused on making a big push at winning the Under 21 championship, especially after losing so disappointingly in the semi-final last year to Beagh. Kilnadeema/Leitrim who started with Eoin Larkin playing in a very unfamiliar roll as a full forward were slow to get going even though playing with the breeze. Even if they did score a goal very early on. County minor Stephen Lambert opened the scoring with a point from play after only one minute for Kilbeacanty. Kilnadeema/Leitrim soon stole a march on their south Galway opponents when corner forward Shane O'Looney reacted first to crash home the opening goal on 4 minutes. From here on until the 13th minute we had no further scores even though the play was very competitive. Sean Burke, who was brilliantly accurate all day from play and free's took a pass from Liam Geargthy and shot a great point from midfield to open up a three point lead. Noel Glynn replyed with a hugh free two minutes later and he soon added another point, this time from play. Sean Burke and Stephen Lambert then swopted points from free's after 25 mins before Sean added another wonderful point from play, again from over 70 yards out to put three points between the sides. Eoin Larkin was causing plenty problems for Kilbeacanty's full back and first he drew a free off him which Sean Burke slotted over and then really changed the game right at the end of the first half when after Eoin O'Toole had a great shot at goal brilliantly saved, Eoin was quickest to react and soon had the ball nestling in the back of the net to leave the score reading 2.04 to 0.04. Kilnadeema/Leitrim added another point just on the stroke of half time when Sean Burke converted his fifth point of the half, again from a free to finish off the half and leave Kilnadeema/Leitrim leading by seven points as we thought. Immediately after blowing for half time referee Mike Conway confirmed that the half time score was 2.06 to 0.04 and an eight point lead. Whatever about the point that wasn't Kilnadeema/Leitrim didn't mind in the slightest. While Kilnadeema/Leitrim would be fairly happy with their first half performance, they would be a lot less happy with what went on in the second half . Stephen Lambert miss hit a free on three minutes which Mark Herlihy did well to save and push away. Sean Burke extended his sides lead on 8 mins with another point from a free. Kilbeacanty under the guidance of former Galway great Steve Mahon did not take their chances very well in this half went about reducing the lead on 14 minutes when Noel Glynn scored his second point, this time from play. Stephen Lambert then added another pointed free a minute later as Kilbeacanty came at Kilnadeema/Leitrim in droves . Team captain Michael Hedderman who has been out injured for most of the year made a welcome comeback when he replaced Ruairi Costello. Lambert continued to pile on more pressure on his opponents with two more points, one each from a free and play to leave the score reading 2.07 to 0.08 with twelve minutes remaining. Eventually Sean Burke scored his seventh point of the game after 19 mins with another free. Lambert and Burke then swopted points as six still separated the sides after 22 mins. Steven Lambert, who never gave up for Kilbeacanty tacked on another point a minute later from play. Then Kilnadeema/Leitrim goalie Mark Herlihy was called upon to make a brilliant save when he had to stretch full length to push out the ball and avert a certain goal which Kilbeacanty needed to have any hope of winning. Noel Glynn scored the last point of the game from play on the 27 minute to leave the final score line according to the Referee 2.09 to 0.11. And so every team bar the Junior C's have qualified for at least the quarter final of the championship in 2007, something to be proud of. This team will hope to go much further but first they must defeat high flying Padraig Pearses in the quarter finals.

Under-21's reach semi-final
Extra time required to see off Padraig Pearses in brilliant game

Under 21 hurling championship quarter final played in Ballinasloe on Sunday November 11th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 4.12  Padraig Pearses 0.17
If Kilnadeema/Leitrim under-21 team are going to go all the way and finally bring home an Under-21 title in 2007, then they are certainly going about it the hard way as they proved when going all the way to extra time in their quarter final victory over Padraig Pearses on Sunday November 11th in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe, before finally reaching another county semi-final against Moycullen. Having already having to go to two games to defeat Kilbeacanty in the previous round, this will certainly be a battle hardened team. Former county minor star Jimmy Glisten opened the scoring in the 2nd minute from a free before Sean Burke replyed five minutes later with a point from play from out near midfield. Damien Wynne soon had Padraig Pearses back in front again with another point from play. The game had many twists and turns throughout and the first arrived after twelve minutes when Shane O'Looney got on the end of a long Fergal Nevin delivery to flick the ball into the net to open up a two point lead. A Minute later Fergal Nevin, who was beginning to dominate at centre half forward pointed a great score after a good pass from Padraig McLoughlin. Sean Burke with two pointed free's on the 14th and 16th minutes soon had Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.04 to 0.02 in front. Thomas Barrett increased the lead with another point from play a minute later and were seven points between the sides soon after when Fergal Nevin pointed a long range score after a great build up involving Liam Geargthy, Ruairi Costello and Brian Gardiner. Jimmy Glisten with a point from play on 19 minutes finally got Padraig Pearses their first score in 16 minutes. Sean Burke soon cancelled out that point with another pointed free. Thomas Flannery now took over the free taking for Padraig Pearses and added their fourth point on 25 minutes. His team finally started to get it together at this stage and added two more points before half time from Jimmy Glisten and Michael Ruane to leave the half time score reading 1.07 to 0.06. With Padraig Pearses to have the use of the breeze in the second half it was going to be anybody's game, and they made a brilliant start with three unanswered points inside five minutes from Thomas Flannery with two and Niall Skehill to leave just one point between the sides. Kilnadeema/Leitrim, who were struggling to stay in the game got another real break on 12 minutes when Ruairi Costello goaled after a Sean Burke free was blocked down when a point looked certain. This gave the team a big lift again and they soon were stretching their lead with points from Sean Burke and Shane O'Looney, both from play. It was now that Padraig Pearses really put it up to Kilnadeema/Leitrim and shot three unanswered points by the 20th minute, two from lively full forward Emmet Ward and one from Michael Ruane to close the gap to three 2.09 to 0.12. A Minute later the game really turned in their favour when after Mark Herlihy made a great save to stop a certain point the ball spun out of his grasp and suddenly Niall Skehill had the simple task of a tap in goal to level up the game on 21 minutes. Padraig Pearses could now since the winning line and soon found themselves three points in front following points from Damien Wynne and two from the impressive Emmet Ward. With time almost up it looked all over for Kilnadeema/Leitrim but Shane O'Looney had other idea's as he sidestepped three challenges before laying on a great pass to Sean Burke who crashed home the equalising goal in injury time to save the day and force extra time on a score line of 3.09 to 1.15. Kilnadeema/leitrim got a new lease of life in extra time and soon were in complete control. First Sean Burke pointed from play before we saw a brilliant goal from substitute Eoin O'Toole on 3 minutes. Sean Burke with a 65 and Eoin Larkin with a mighty point from near the sideline left six between the sides at half time. it was a big lead at this stage and Padraig Pearses needed a great start which they nave got. The best they could do was score two Shane Rafferty points from 21 yard free's as soon time ran out and Kilnadeema/Leitrim's dream lived on for another day on a final score line of 4.12 to 0.17. This was a great game for this time of year and sets us up nicely for a semi final battle with West Galway team Moycullen, who will be very fit and strong runners at this time of year.

Scorers: Sean Burke 1.07, Shane O'Looney 1.01, Eoin O'Toole 1.00, Ruairi Costello 1.00, Fergal Nevin 0.02, Eoin Larkin 0.01, Thomas Barrett 0.01.

Moycullen prove much too good in semi-final mis-match

Under 21 hurling championship semi-final played in Ballindeereen on Saturday  November 24th
Kilnadeema/Leitrim 1.06  Moycullen 2.21
At Ballindeereen on Saturday, Moycullen qualified for the Under21 B championship final against Killimordaly. apart from a stiff breeze, conditions were excellent for this time of year, with the condition of the pitch a credit to the local club. despite playing into the elements, Moycullen took less than a minute to open the scoring through Conor Bohan. Robert Molloy added a second within minutes. A free from Sean Burke and a strong run and score from Ruairi Costello levelled matters but Kilnadeema/Leitrim never got closer. Moycullen added six points before half time to three Sean Burke points  to leave it 1.08 to 0.05 at the break. Kilnadeema/leitrim probably breaded a goal to turn the tide and Moycullen goalkeeper Dan Kelly made three solid saves. It was to Moycullen the goal came; a Philip Lydon deflection to a long ball deceived Mark Herlihy in goal. Kilnadeema/leitrim lost two very strong players through injury in the first half namely Fergal Nevin and Ian Burns which were very hard to replace.
When Moycullen added three points after half time, the game was over as a contest. Nine players contributed a further 1.10 and even when Brian Gardiner drilled a fine goal with nine minutes left, there was still a ten point deficit. Kilnadeema/Leitrim tried hard but Moycullen were on top in most area's Sean Burke was Kilnadeema/Leitrim's best player on the day. The final score line reading 2.21 to 1.06. A sad end to a great year.
